We get this question from time to time, and it's understandable if you've never seen a forum layout like this, so here's a quick guide on how to post an image in a thread or new topic on Permies.
First, is your image too big? Many digital cameras have far more pixels than they did even 10 years ago. Check the size and use a snipping program, paint or similar to decrease the pixel count.
Posting an Image with the 'Img' Button
First, where is the picture you want to post? In order to post an image in a thread with the img button in the menu, the image needs to be online somewhere.* You can upload your image somewhere, and then use that image address to put your photo into a post.
To add the image to your post, right click the full sized image, and select 'Copy Image Address'.
Go back to your post, and click the img button.
When the little window pops up, paste (or Ctrl/Command + V) the image address into the box, and submit.
It's always a good idea to make sure your post looks right before you submit it - check it beforehand with 'Preview'
**Note: If posting images from other sites, please make sure to include a link to the source below the image, and note that not all photos are free to post elsewhere. You can search for photos based on usage rights on Google Image Search by selecting Tools -> Usage Rights -> Free to use or share from the menu above image search results.
Posting an Image as an Attachment
If your image is on your device and you don't feel like uploading it anywhere online, you can just attach it directly to your post.
Write out the body of your post.
At the bottom of the post, you'll see some tabs - click on 'Attachments'.
Click 'Choose File', and select the photo you would like to upload, keeping in mind the file name will be visible to everyone.

I gave up on external photo hosts - even if they do show up here, they may not in a year. So many Photobucket and fliker images are replaced with advertizements after a couple of years.
I just upload the image to permies, for free, when I need it. There's an "attachments" option where you can upload the image with the post.

In the interim, I just jump online for a few minutes and do things, but shh - don't tell anyone about my secret little tests
However, I'm glad that *you* saw...so now I know to keep an eye out for the thread in that forum about embedding photos
Hey Rob, I have tried google photos here as well and also no go. They show up for you, so you assume they are fine, but not for anyone else. I tried fooling around with permissions but it still didn't work, so who knows.
I only learned this week, however, that there is no need to do so (other forums I've been on required external hosting, so I just assumed. You know that saying about making an ass out of u and me...). Upload it directly, who knew? Now to think about how to use all the time I gain by not screwing around with image hosting sites and BB codes....
If I want to just add a picture to a thread from a google image or amazon product search, is this the right way?
First I find an image, often using google/yahoo image search. Then I right click and hit "Copy image location". Then I go into the post I'm typing and click the IMG button and hit "Ctrl-V" to paste it into that popup. And voila:
Search engines usually change the image address overtime to prevent people grabbing from there.
Also, grabbing images from search means the address of the image is from that search engine thumbnail. If you grab from the site where it is hosted, then people interested in that image can have an easier path back to where it came from.
It's not plagiarizing, but there are copyright issues that are possible (depending on the intent, the country you are in, the country the image owner is in, and the location of the server of the website you're posting to) - aka, it's complicated.
Instead of dealing with copyright issues, most people are fine if there is a link back to where the image came from.
Ok, so I should find images out on websites (not search engine search results) and use them. Plus add the source bit at the bottom. That'll slow me down a bit but if that's how it should be done, I'll do it. Thanks!

I just join a free picture hosting site, currently using "imgbb"... I save whatever picture to my computer and then upload to the free hosting site... Once it is uploaded I copy the image code on this site it simply says... "imbed code" I click on that and copy the code and paste it on here. I then have to go down on bottom left of the "thread window" and deselect the top box " [ ] Disable HTML in this message ". If you don't deselect that it will not show the actual picture in the post.
I like the free web image hosting sites as they will still be there hosting that image years down the road when someone looks at the post. If you wish to use this free service that I am using just type in "imgbb" in your browser and create a free account with them. It is a pretty simple and easy site to work in, not confusing as some I have used in the past were.

You can upload photos to permies for no charge.
The old sites that I don't even use anymore from more than ten years ago are still hosting the photos I put into threads. I just put in the idea of using free ones like I do as a means of testing this out with zero risk for the OP. They may well be better off spending money to test this out and learn about it.
I did a thread on my sawmill and what I learned in the first year of setting it up and using it, that thread had over 180K views. That was ten years ago and it still has all the photos in it, I seriously doubt that anyone is looking at it now after so many years, but if they do it still has all the images showing all the little tricks that I learned and came up with. I stopped using that image hosting service years ago as it became so slow to load pictures onto and had so many advertisements it barely worked half the time, but the first few years it worked great. I am on my third free hosting site now, the last I stopped using as I had issues understanding the process and I kept getting the wrong information copied and had some issues trying to use the site well.
I like the site that I am using now, it is free, simple, and easy to understand, all is good...
Some hi-res photos can be a huge file. Is there a preference for keeping images below a certain size? I don't want to hog forum resources.

Hi guys, I just posted a thread presenting my new permarchitecture website in "Introductions". The image the post chose as it's thumbnail picture needs to be changed, and it doesn't seem to want to.. How does it choose the post thumbnail picture? Thanks:)
I am trying to attach an image to my post from my device. It is not on line.
I cannot find any attachment button like you describe, just an image button which needs a URL.
Is there something I am missing?
When attaching an image, what's the upper limit on length of caption? (And this seems like it has to have been asked and answered, so I encourage you to just point me where the answer already exists.)

I think google images has changed since this was written. I don’t see a “free to use or share “ option. I’m guessing I need to select Creative Commons license, right?

I could swear that I used to post attachments from my phone and they would show up in the text of the message.
That no longer seems to be the case.
Am I just goofy, or has something changed about attachments?
