Get these gorgeous cards all mashed together into a handy dandy e-book.

How to download after payment:

Return to this page and you'll find a purple box at the bottom of the post with the download link. Just click it, and your download will begin!

It would be wonderful if you left a comment here, letting us know if you used Paypal or pie to buy the e-book, and if you had any problems with the system. Or if you thought is was awesome!

Thanks!

Just 'bought' it with a piece of pie!
The file loaded quickly and looks great, although I haven't browsed through the whole thing yet.

Thank you very much!

I bought it using paypal.  The linking and login was smooth.  Two clicks in Paypal to make the purchase, then the permies page reloaded with the files available to download.

Download took two minutes.

PDF file looks good.  Paypal works well.

I purchased the pdf using Paypal for $1. All went well, no problems, download took less than a minute.
Upon coming to the download page, I was confused for a brief moment, thinking the process had failed...until I saw the download link.
A confirmation like "Thank you for your purchase" would be nice touch. Maybe there was something and I missed it, I didn't linger on that page before opening a reply.

Okay, I put this test through the wringer! I tried to reply while downloading, switched wifi while downloading, and tried to download while lots of others might have been trying, too.

I agree with Ken and Tracy that in a proper/polished/finished-product digital item for sale thread that having an explanation about being brought back to the thread and there will be a file to download (or video to stream, etc.) right there in the thread, could be a big help.

So I paid with pie and was brought back to the thread with the download file available. Cool!

I started the download...which said 3 minutes, 4 minutes, 5 minutes, 3 minutes, 2 minutes...then I clicked reply before it was done. (I know. I'm SO ADD...)

As I was trying to reply, the time went from 2 minutes, to 3, then 4, then 5, then, 8, then 11, and so on as it started climbing higher and higher into download time.

So I used the back arrow on my browser and the time immediately went back down again to around 3-4 minutes. Though it hovered there quite some time, and I got frustrated/impatient/ADD again. So I looked at my wifi and realized I was on the wifi for the community office, not my back bedroom office. So I changed wifi to the better one for my location in the middle of the download. (I knoooowww...)

And the download failed. "Network error."

Luckily, (ahem! good design!), I was able to go back to the page/post and start the download again, this time on the better wifi.

It still took 3 to 4 minutes (or more? my ADD self had to go look at other things) though since loads of folks were likely attempting to download at the same time due to the plotskateers email, I thought the slower speed might have been from that.

In the end, despite my inadvertent sabotaging, I have the ebook of playing cards! WOOHOO!!

Bought the cards using Paypal. You really need directions on how to purchase, and where the purchase is. (My feel, it is best to have an email with the download link, rather than going back to the thread, and looking for the download link.)  Also to purchase, I had to just start clicking to find how to download. Never found the option for purchases, I only got the paypal login.

Hi Ben;

Thanks for your feedback. We are working on refining the system, so it's great to hear everyone's experiences. You'll find the link to download at the bottom of the original post. Once payment is made, the big black and purple payment box disappears, and the link shows at the bottom of the post.

In future there will be clearer instructions.

Thanks!

Bought it with pie.  The file downloaded before I could read to the bottom of the thread.

It's kind of fun to see the cards big like that!  I can appreciate more detail that I'm missing without breaking out the granny glasses. . .

I purchased from Spain with PayPal. I saw the cool photo-looking black box with the purchase links in the bottom of the first post. Even though it looked more like a photo of links than real links and I was suspicious, I clicked on purchase with PayPal and was sent straight to their usual login. (Maybe in the fake-link-looking black box you could put a headline that says "CLICK ON A LINK BELOW TO PURCHASE" or something similar that would embolden the timid, clueless, or those having a bad hair day.)

After the usual PayPal formalities, I clicked the button to finalize the purchase and was suddenly back on the Permies thread that I started from. I thought "oh I've blown it" because I have script blockers and I hadn't remembered to give permission to all scripts on Permies and PayPal before I did this. So I figured PayPal had crashed in the middle of my purchase. But lo and behold, down at the bottom of the first post where before was the aforementioned black box, was a download link. Click and very fast download (3 seconds?), didn't even give me time to try weird Jocelyn tricks like changing WiFis in the middle. Download is fine, cards are so gorgeous I'm trembling with excitement.

I would appreciate a more "normal" PayPal experience where after pressing the button to purchase, I'm sent to a PayPal page that confirms the purchase went through and gives me the option to return to the originating site. This was too efficient and caused momentary freakout syndrome.

But from my end looks like you system is working somewhere between fine and overly fine.

Actually, I agree very much with this. I was expecting to see a 'return to permies' or something and when I didn't, I had to do a double take and search for some sort of confirmation that it worked, or that it didn't work. And hten I found the box with the download file. I use paypal for almost everything in terms of online purchases so I guess it's also to do with the hidden expectations I had.

I am not certain, but I think this is something that paypal is forcing on us.  We got a bunch of emails from paypal in the last month telling us that we were doing digital content purchases "the old way" which will be turned off at the end of march.  So we have to use "the new way" or it will stop working.

For the path of making this work, we decided that all purchases must be tied to a permies account.  That way, if you want to come back tomorrow and download it, you can.

So, to buy something, we need to know which permies account is tied to the purchase.

I guess the real question is:  is it doing this in a klunky way?  Was it smooth?  Did it seem like the right path?

Ok, bought via PayPal on my iPad. First attempt at download failed so backed up and it took me to the login site.  I logged in and it then downloaded.  After reading the cards I went back to my email and it would not work so closed it and reopened it (think that is an iPad issue).  Then found I was logged out of Permies so relogged in and here I am.  Cards are beyond expectations.  Will be buying for presents.

Dale,

I think you are touching on my primary worry about doing any digital download:   everything on our end can work perfectly, but so much stuff can go wrong!

I'm not a great technology person, everything went smoothly for me which is a good sign. The download was slow but I'm in the boonies on satellite WiFi so that is normal for me.

There are two problems on our end.  One is the constant upgrade.  I learned on the original PC's in '86 and just upgraded to Windows 7.  Hopefully will not have to go any higher.  The other problem is operator error.  At one time I worked with 8 software programs and I still have to log in twice to get my password typed correctly, assuming I can find the correct password.  All that said I suspect the same amount of difficulty exists for download and streaming.

So far, everything with streaming has been much smoother.

My computer experience starts with an imsai 8080, goes through the PET/CBM stuff, then onto CPM, then DOS and unix, then windows and some xterm stuff, eventually lots of time on different flavors of windows and linux gui stuff.   I am no power user, but i am now comfortably settled in to being a linux mint user.

Another smooth transaction on my desktop. I think tying the purchase to a permies account is pretty smart. I can definitely see issues with using mobile or ipad.

One thing I would like to say on the mobile front: I just logged in to permies forums from my phone. I went to permies.com, and clicked the sandwich menu in upper right hand corner, and intuitively I was looking for "Login" link but didn't see it. I did figure out I had to click forum first, but Login might be a menu item to add.

Also, another issue with the download: sometimes I want to purchase something while I am on the go (mobile) and then download it on the computer later. In this current system, I did not receive an email with a link back to the thread to download the item. I did receive the paypal receipt. I personally would like to see a way to get an email with the download link both as a reminder I purchased and where to get it, but an easy way to get back to it.

Hope this feedback helps. If my purchasing habits were strictly on desktop, the current system is pretty darn good. but email link would help on both mobile and desktop.

thanks!

I attempted to use pie... then I got directed to a small page saying I didn't have enough.

It would be nice to have links on that page describing pie, what it is, and how I could get some more so I can get the cards.

Good stuff.  Some of these things are being worked on right now.  And the one about login on the mobile view is new.
