Club style mallet - PEP BB roundwood.sand.club

I try to keep several of these around and my last one died a bit prematurely so I need some more. I have some woods I prefer for these, but they're not on hand and I cut a black cherry down recently so I figured I'd try it out. This chunk is well over 4" in diameter. I went with a knotty section that otherwise would be firewood. Hatchet only. Already back riving some fencing from white oak.

I made a club style mallet with a hatchet and drawknife.

Maple mallet

I made one! It is made from Hard Maple. I say that rather than sugar maple because it is so accurate a description of the wood…

Tools used: hatchet, bowsaw, saw-machete hybrid (sorry, only handles visible)

Here is Clodhopper, This was actually completed last year and Id forgotten to post it. Clodhopper has already been used and abused into retirement but we now have a few others that get made as needed. But the original is now a door stop cause I think its pretty cool we made a tool and cant bring myself to burn it!  

FIRST BB for this budding permanatic (permanent permaculture fanatic? if it isn't coined yet please make a note in the log xD)!

Meets minimum reqs. Focused on safety, dealing with the tools at hand, and setting a baseline for documentation for future BBs

Starting wood: I think it is Common Buckthorn but I'm still embarrassingly new to plant ID. Any feedback appreciated!

Notes - I don't have the correct saw, hatchet, or axe for this. It will be so much faster with the right tools (not to mention having made one now), but I'm glad to have done it the hard way the first time.

PS Extra credit - the scrap went into compost and mulch, and I plan to use other pieces of the buckthorn for the spoon, stool legs, and a lashed stand for some rolls of material I want to be able to measure and cut more easily!
