I was blog exploring this morning and found someone's blog post about their braided rag rugs. I've been working on a winter clean, sort, and purge, and up soon will be going through my boxes of saved fabrics. I could sure use some small area rugs, especially in the kitchen. I know there are other techniques for rug making and would love to know what others have made. Anyone care to share?

I don't make them anymore...although I made these twined rugs in this link for years along with floor loom woven ones.

This isn't what people generally mean by "rag rug", but I've made three rugs by cutting denim (mostly, but old sheets also) into strips and then knitting them on needles custom-fabricated by sharpening yard-long dowels and wrapping the other end in rubber bands to form stops. I'm only finding pictures of two right now:

I made woven rag rugs on a floor loom - twine as the warp and strips of fabric as the weft. One of them has been on the kitchen floor for most of 30 years and it's starting to show its age. The bathroom one is equally old and going strong.

I read somewhere that if you went with a twining loom, your could use strips of fabric for the warp as well, but I've never tried that.

I've been working on a round, braided rag-rug in fits and starts since late Spring last year. Now that the braid is done (at least, for now), I'm hand-stitching it into the circular shape, much like someone would stitch together a round jute floor-mat.

It's maybe a foot in diameter now, but I chip away at it when the time is available. Here's the most-recent photo I have of it.

I have made some crocheted ragrugs out of old t-shirts. They're pretty durable and machine-washable

Wow Opalyn, that is just gorgeous.

I used to crochet and knit the strips into rugs, but it takes a lot of hand strength that I just don't have anymore. Now I'm taking the strips and crocheting around them to make rugs.
Below is one in progress, and one completed (which just came off the washline and needs to have the crooked bits tucked in). They crochet up really quick.

I really like this! Beautiful job, Opalyn. I'm going to have to try this once I finally get my (soon-to-be) sewing room set up.

Tereza, I really like yours too. I especially like starting with round and transitioning to a square. Very clever!
