Wow!

I have a little beef with calling all those public state universities "private" employers, but I guess the point of the map is really to show of how crazy-big Walmart is. :)

ETA: I just looked it up -- the US Federal Government has 2.26 million employees, so still larger than Walmart (for now).

Christopher, thanks for posting these. I always enjoy them, and I think this may be one of your most interesting sets. (I also like that your sets have no discernable theme, but I still try to puzzle out whether each set has a theme that I can't see.)

Interesting to see the increase in occupied eagle nests.

The Waffle House / cardiac death overlay is interesting.  At minimum it shows correlation, but doesn't imply causation.  I'm a bit surprised since we hear that overexertion shovelling snow is often associated with heart attacks, but the areas with more snow have a lower death rate.  Of course, there would be other factors.

With some of these (like Super Bowl snacks and desserts), it amazes me that people take time to put something like that together.  That would be time better spent at permies.com.

Interesting about the language difficulty one: Finno-Ugric languages are considered the most difficult. This tracks since they are non-Indo-European. I lived in Hungary during my early 20s, and it took me about a year to feel confident in the language, so my experience lines up with what the Foreign Service says.

The Basque map makes me sad. I know there are efforts to revive the language, but such efforts always face an uphill battle. Basque is the only European language isolate, meaning a language with no known related languages. This alone makes it a fascinating language. When languages die, we lose a lot of cultural knowledge. David Harrison wrote a great book on the topic of language death: https://academic.oup.com/book/7865

Random, involving interesting maps.

Years ago me and mom did a puzzle of an antique map, we liked it so much it hung on the wall for several years.

The other day I bought this at a thrift store for 25 cents. So pretty!

Mike,

When I took over my organization as CEO, I had recently moved from northern MN to southern Illinois.   We were getting a dusting of snow …I could still, easily, see the green grass.  My employees were in a panic because I was not shutting the place down.   One employee came to me in tears accusing me of trying to deprive her children of a mother.

I used to work in an organization headquartered in Atlanta.  It was sort of amusing to us that a dusting of snow or below freezing temperatures would herald an email about head office being closed and people working from home on a best effort basis.

As for school closings, here I think there is also a temperature factor.  For snow, it's about whether or not the buses can make the run.  Growing up in small town Saskatchewan in the 1970s, school rarely if ever closed for weather...on days where the buses didn't run bringing in the farm kids we had about half our class size so had a day with more art, phys. ed., etc. so they didn't get behind.  Some of those students whose parents worked in town were brought in by their folks.

Also with school closings, the benchmarks change depending on how the year has gone. If they build four snow-days into the academic year, and there hasn't been any, then in March, they'll close for six inches when in November it would take 24.

omg, stop!! I have work to do, LOL!! I forgot to click "like" on everything I looked at, but I just spent maybe 20-30min on this thread! I love so many of them, but among the most recent, I love the China one. I lived there and learned the language, and once you get the pronunciation the rest really isn't hard because it's very practical, as you can see by the "east river, west river, etc". Oh, and no genders for any words, not even people! There's no he/she/it. It's all just "ta". He? ta. She? ta. the dog? ta. the mountain? ta. Everyone except "me/I" and "you" is an "it", lol!

What attracted me to the maps in this batch, in order:

In the early '70s, I rose to consciousness in the "republicans" region of California.

I mostly thought this was a cool way to show Hadrian's Wall without being just a line on a map or a deep-dive.

This is a neat way to represent things -- length of track per area of the nation. I'd like to also see a passenger/freight breakdown.

My most frequent time-zone crossing is along the north shore of Lake Superior at the international border. The northern Ontario time feels screwball and the Minnesota/home time feels right. And I sort of assumed that was just a matter of being used to it. But this shows that we transit from white to red and that sensation is more justified than I'd guessed.

The heat-source map just felt like a pretty Permies-related thing, especially with Paul figuring out the average costs of various heat sources a year or two back.

The source of babies map is maybe a little fraught because of the way people will layer on weird religious and political judgment (along all vectors), but it's still cool information and a good way to display it. I'd personally be more interested if the bubble-size correlated with births over population instead of the raw number, but I'm not the one who took the time to build it.

Yay, new maps!
What I learned today:
I had no idea Sequoia National Forest was as far south as Las Vegas! I've never been to any national parks out west, and for some reason I imagined it way up in redneck land (according to the map, not my label, eek). I also knew nothing about Hadrian's Wall, so thank you for the education today.

When I lived in China I was in Beijing, which is in a comfortable time zone compared to the rest of the world, but it always fascinated me that the whole country was on the same time zone! It spans 5 zones according to the rest of the world, but if you live in western China and have a job that involves communicating with anyone outside your area, your workday is something like noon - 8pm.

Not me. My first thought was "But Australia is so BIG! Do they not have sex there?!?", which caused me to look up their population and find this fun list at the World-o-meter:
https://www.worldometers.info/world-population/population-by-country/
And now I am shocked to learn that Australia's population is the same as teeny-tiny North Korea's!! Wow!

There are soooo... many factors involved. Australia has a lot of dryland which didn't encourage high density human habitation. Canada has many similar areas. If you've ever visited areas north of Lake Superior in Black Fly or Mosquito season... let's just say it takes a certain type of human to live there! (I react badly to both types of bites, and the whine mosquitoes make totally throws my concentration, as I don't filter sound the way most people do, so I definitely don't want to live there.)

Canada has had a lot of immigration in the last decade, but most of it landed in our existing largely populated areas. I've seen some interesting maps of the USA where they have suggested reasons for population density - sometimes based on history, sometimes based on ecosystem, but often reliable access to water ends up being an important key.

Oh man! We camped at Neys in June once and the mosquitos, flies, midges, etc were so awful that we only go now at the end of August through the beginning of October. And I understand that they're much worse inland!

Yay!  We're top 10 (if you consider lowest population density).  All that open space for an introvert to get away from everyone else

Great maps once again.  The US heating map was interesting - as much fossil fuel production as there is in TX and many areas heat by electricity was one thing that struck me.  Also, the islands of natural gas within electricity.  Finally, some areas that "heat" homes.  I guess things can cool off in the winter, but the stereotype for a lot of the south is hot.  More insulation would help for both heating and cooling, but that's another topic....

I recognize a couple of the place names on the Hadrian's Wall map, but had never been curious enough to look up where they were located.

I live in Utah, so I guess I'm safe from outbreaks of both Lyme disease and excessive drinking.

Regarding the California map, OTTERS is right! We lived 1/4 mile from a beach on Monterey Bay. There were otters in the water 60*/* of the time. We had.a sandy beach, and otters prefer a rocky shoreline.
