Supper, although my daughter has started using dinner regularly.  I grew up with dinner referring to the middle meal of the day, so I turned to lunch and supper to eliminate any possible confusion.

Regarding the state mottos, I struggle with some of the colour differences.  Where is the motto French?  I find the shade difference between French and another (none perhaps) to be a bit close so couldn't be certain.  I regularly hear analysis from a fellow in the global macroeconomic realm who is a "chartist" - he uses so many pastel colours on busy charts that it's very difficult to distinguish one line from another.

My own state of Minnesota has the sole French motto: "L'Étoile du Nord"

29-25 years ago, I had a boss who learned that I was an Excel "expert" so I was tasked with devising the slides he took to the monthly executive leadership meeting that would showcase our department's chief accomplishment for the month. He always wanted a chart -- it was more important that he have a cool chart than what the chart demonstrated. And sometimes he'd bring it back to me with the directive "more colors" without any indication of what they'd be for. (He was a pretty good manager in most regards, but this was either a clear weakness on his part or an indicator of really broken upper management.)

Thanks Christopher...you saved me from the effort of looking it up myself.  The star of the north seems like a decent motto.

Interesting diversity of topics....

I like the fish diversity, but am saddened that we have relatively few here...mind you there are quite a number and some pretty impressive sport fishing, to say nothing of commercial fishery on the lakes (supported by stocking).

I've been on more portions of the Pan-American Highway than I expected and in at least 4 countries.  A couple fellows from South America visited with the local car club when they came through (the eastern unofficial portion) in a '60s Ford - it was a model that wasn't available in North America.  They were working on driving the entire route.  Road trip indeed.

I find it amusing that whoever created the Columbian exchange graphic noted a bunch of "bad stuff" coming to the Americas.

There are still some French-only speakers here in Manitoba, but they are a dying breed.  The distribution of the map was a bit coarse - there are pockets of French speakers throughout western Canada, but probably a smaller portion of the overall population in a large enough area.  My wife's grandfather had been editor of a French language paper in Edmonton, but that would be a number of decades ago.

We have a trip planned to Egypt and Jordan, so have been watching some streaming programs online, which has led us to learning a lot about the ebb and flow of dynasties in the region including Persian, Macedonian (Ptolemaic pharaohs of Egypt), and the Nubians.  It's really quite intriguing especially when one considers how much history I didn't learn in school and the topics that were presented.

Including important stuff like just how big the Roman empire really was and how many Roman ruins there are outside Rome's peninsula, like bridges and aqueducts in France and baths in England. Things like how borders have changed hugely if you look at at 4000 year scale or longer? Things like ancient trade routes in Asia, Europe and North and South America.

Some of that history has had impact on how we think and interact today.

I hadn't heard of the Great Plains Highway before, but I've been on parts of it.  It reminds me of the Jefferson Highway, also known as the Pine to Palms Highway from Winnipeg to New Orleans.

Two factors here: 1. can you say what's written.
2. Can you say it the way the locals pronounce it!

I know enough French to know how Couer d'Alene would be pronounced in Quebec, but who knows how the people in Idaho pronounce it?

How I was taught to pronounce the Appalachian Mountains and how I'm told the locals pronounce it are considerably different.

I have in-laws in Spokane, so I know how Couer d'Alene is mispronounced....

As it so happens, I know how Natchitoches, LA is pronounced...it happens to be on the aforementioned Jefferson Highway is the reason.

Jay's point 2 is very appropriate - Isanti, MN and Madrid, IA are two that immediately come to mind that are not pronounced as I would expect.

OK, so now we need an equivalent to the last map but for the USA! Yes, it would be cruel and unusual punishment for a child to be named British Columbia, but I've heard worse names hung on children.

There's a local boy named "Houston", but that's a city. There are several Dakotas around, but not with North or South added. Georgia and Virginia are definites also. I think I've heard of a "Montana", but not sure.

Have I missed any?

It's thought provoking that there seems huge push back from some people about Mexicans moving to the USA, but clearly there's a fair bit of the reverse happening, and I've only heard a few complaints about that! (Mostly that they're pushing up the price of housing.) This is from Canada, so we often don't get the whole story.

I want to say that yesterday or the day before I saw a BBC story about the "gringo hunter" branch of the Mexican Federal Police, which focuses specifically on apprehending Americans that flee to Mexico. Maybe not a directly related... or even a complaint, but more of a specialty?

I love stumbling across unusual maps too! It's amazing how many stories a map can tell. One of my favorites is a rainfall map of the U.S. that shows how precipitation varies across regions — you can really see patterns you wouldn't notice otherwise. Thanks for sharing these great finds!

I missed the post two weeks ago but that one about Arkansaw being above all it's neighbors is a bit silly.  West Virginia, Missouri, all of New England and many other states would meet that same criteria.

Something like two days after I posted that I saw the same thing done with Minnesota. Once I realized it's not that uncommon, it seemed less cool.

If I recall correctly, Hans Island is where the opposing factions kept replacing flags and leaving a bottle of liquor for the other side.  That's how boundary disputes should be worked out....
