I've had floaters since at least high school... so almost 15 years now--making me feel rather old for my 30 years. I've never done anything for them, and they've stayed pretty much the same since high school. I usually don't even notice them unless I'm looking at them or at something white or the sky.

I had no idea that people even did things to fix them--thanks for the link! I probably won't try the essential oils, as I've never experimented with them before, and I don't have the money for buying extra supplements. I might try the raw honey, though, as it can't hurt other than being messy!

Interesting. I had floaters since I was a child, and they didn't become worse like you say, they became better. Before they were larger and colorful, now they are small and not very frequent. I am eating better now however, so maybe my liver is in better condition. It seems to be connected with liver health.

Several years ago, I was having problems with them. I had a few that were large enough that I thought one was a mouse.  I read up on macular degeneration and what vitamins to take.  After taking the recommended vitamins the floaters went away.  I can only remember selenium and bilberry.

Following the links given on the Grow Network, here are some suggestions: Take citrus bioflavanoids - a supplement well known to strengthen blood vessels. If you do not have access to these supplements, try a diet rich in the same nutrients. The white part of orange peels is an excellent source of bioflavanoids. But there are tastier sources like red bell peppers, garlic, and strawberries.

To help build up collagen: Take Glucosamine with chondroitan; eat lots of bone broth.  Try eating Jambalaya made with lots of fish, especially those with shells - where you eat the seafood – shells and all, and eat lots of them both.

Yes it is!

I had them as long as I could remember, but they got substantially worse when I got Lyme.  They are one of the "non Lyme" symptoms that went away with my Lyme treatment protocols.

What did you do for your lyme disease cleanse? I've had floaters since at least high school, and it'd be really neat to not have them. I don't know if I could do the cleanse while nursing, though, so I might have to wait a year or two, depending on what's in the cleanse...

Hi Cassie et al,
You could look into natural eye drops containing N-acetyl-carnosine.  I used something called "Can-C" back 25 years ago and my floaters (there were lots) reduced about 95%. Can-C is still available.   http://www.can-c.net/

Vitamin company AOR also carries a product, Ortho-Eyes, containing N-acetyl-carnosine  http://www.aor.ca/en/product/ortho-eyes .  I am using that now, as I got a lot of new floaters over the past year.  My eye doctor tells me my vitreous humor (Ha. Funny) is drying out (Not Funny) and is losing it's matrix. I don't know if that is the cause of the floaters.

I have seen some improvement in the floaters, however,  over the past 4 weeks of using it. Maybe 30% better. So I feel comfortable saying Ortho-Eyes is working.

I will be adding the frankincense / lavender essential oils to my regimen. Thank you to the person/s who posted that info. I feel so grateful to have the permies forums available.
Thanks to Paul and this merry company of permaculturists.

Definitely have heard that Lyme can cause floaters. I just completed a Lyme treatment protocol. Check out Raintree Herbs (sourced from Amazon forest). I took Spiro, Myco, AV and Immune Support alongside InterFase Plus by Klaire Labs and GI Synergy by Apex Energetics. Three months of 10 days on the herbs, then four day’s break on various probiotics (trust me, you need the break). Chronic Lyme sufferers might require an additional treatment following 3 months. Find a good functional medicine doctor if not. Don’t bother with Lyme testing. It’s expensive and not conclusive. Go by your symptoms. Have you gone through a big stressful event recently (birth, divorce, accident, etc)? That can trigger Lyme symptoms. I am symptom free now and so glad I went through those 3 months (that were full on and a lot of it bedridden).

Bartonella is one possible cause. Bart and Lyme often go together but not necessarily. Red stretch marks are the classic symptom but not required. Rage and addictive behavior are symptoms. "Healing Lyme Disease Coinfections: Complementary and Holistic Treatments for Bartonella and Mycoplasma" by Stephen Harrod Buhner is the obligatory book. Eating real food, especially red meat, and avoiding industrial food-like products will help.

Though not an absolute, floaters have been  associated with diabetes.  I need to stress that simply because you have floaters does not mean you have diabetes.

I used to have annoying floaters and I just realized after seeing this forum that now I don't.  I have no idea what I did, unfortunately, except that I do take various nutritional supplements.  I have a feeling -- not any scientific knowledge -- that it might be milk thistle, which is great for the liver.  Traditional Chinese medicines include milk thistle and dandelion for liver tonics.  Also, chronic inflammation seems to be associated with eye floaters and I'm a long-term Golden Paste (turmeric) user.

I have 'floaters' for as long as I can remember. Always thought there is nothing you can do about it, just get used to them. Now I see this topic and Marjory's site, I start thinking it's possible to get rid of those things (sometimes blocking my view when making detailed drawings or handcrafts). First remedy I'll try is the honey.

The floaters in most people's eyes are small blood clots.  Converting to a ketogenic diet (low carbohydrate) or otherwise reducing your chronically high insulin will eliminate these floaters.

Lots of anecdotal stuff here...
Some possibly factual stuff-  a few years ago I helped out an older (mid 70s) neighbor diagnosed with onset of macular degeneration. She had been told by 2 different eye specialists to take Lutein, drink lots of carrot juice, and had also been told that floaters are relatively harmless but that the flashes of light can be an indicator of impending Mac degeneration.
The floaters are harmless, but annoying. They concern is if they get worse, get larger, or are accompanied by flashes. I wish I had further info from her, but she moved out of the area to be with family and we did not stay in touch. Last time we talked she was considering cbd oil. So...
Lastly- In a 2004 study of brain tumors, researchers found that cannabinoids blocked and inhibited VEGF pathways through the body, showing incredible promise for cannabis as a treatment for macular degeneration. ... The THC content will combat VEGF progression, while the CBD will calm inflamed tissue.
I do have a family member who says cannabis use has helped eliminate floaters. Of course now we’re back to anecdotal...

An ayurvedic opthalmologist in India told me tharpanam should get rid of my 20 year old floater. Haven't tried yet. You can see him—as well as tarpanam being performed—in the film Ayurveda The Art Of Being. He is Dr. Gokulan. He said standard tarpanam should work, no need to visit him.

If you understand herbs at all you know what will help the most are the herbs that work on the part of the body where the symptoms are occurring but also since our bodies are nothing but a bunch of cells and two major fluids (blood and lymph) it is important to keep those fluids clean - especially the lymph which is the body's main sewer system- ALSO OUR IMMUNE SYSTEM - and cleans away wastes from our bodies' cells and ideally transports them down to our kidneys and out into our urine.

The way to keep the lymph fluid clean is with the lymphatic herbs and with a clean diet that won't clog your lymphatic system/immune system.

I have brought on floaters myself by eating meat, dairy and refined grains together. which have little chance of being fully digested and expelled from the body, especially when eaten together. I got rid of them with an eyewash I made based on Dr. John Christopher's formulas using Eyebrite and Cayenne Pepper tincture. His Eyebrite formula is sold on Amazon and has Eyebrite, Bayberry Bark, Goldenseal, Red Raspberry Leaf and Cayenne Pepper in it. I got relief in hours after using it and only needed to use it a few days to get rid of the worst floaters I'd ever had. Study Dr. John Christopher's work and buy his books if you want to learn how to heal all ills. Dr. Linda Pages books are another good resource as is Dr Robert Morse.

To permanently rid ourselves of all chronic and degenerative conditions and "dis -eases", the answer is to get clean inside by detoxing our bodies. Doing a parasite cleanse is just part of it. A colon cleanse should be done at the same time as well as a liver cleanse using only herbs grown in Nature - not to be confused with man-made isolate vitamins and mineral supplements which the body can't fully recognize, digest, assimilate and eliminate but instead, the man-made supplements just stimulate at first but later enervate. Using whole herbs which the body sees as food, we can fully heal and get to the point where we no longer need them.

Besides the three cleanses above we need to work on dislodging and cleaning our lymphatic system which includes fluids in the eyes . That would entail taking herbs such as Dandelion and others - all the while supporting our adrenal glands which oversee our endocrine system and our kidneys which the metabolic wastes have to pass through if we are going to regain robust health.  Lastly to do a cleanse we need a water rich raw plant based diet of mostly raw fruit and raw fruit-like vegetables with seeds and tender greens and to be dedicated and disciplined for 3-6 months while we detox our bodies and get rid of old wastes, dissolve tumors etc. Sometimes for those with "incurable" conditions, it takes longer but it is definitely doable. Nature has remedies for all our ills.

natural options for treating eye floaters

I have heard in reading about cures for the eyes that holding a cold spoon on the eyeball and rotating the eyeball for 30 seconds and then taking a warm compress and pressing it on the eyeballs while your head is tilted back will allow the floaters to seep out a rear hole in the back of the eye I have done this with some success. It is also a suspicion in the medical community that floaters eventually get together to form cataracts I don't know for sure? I have also heard that this hot cold remedy is good for retinal detachment flashing symptom in the eyes and other eye ailments using the warm compress on the eyes when someone has pink eye will kill the pink eye and restore the natural health of the eye I have also heard that taking regular hot steam like in a sweat lodge will clear the white of the eye and make it very white and healthy I've also heard that eating lots of vegetables leafy greens will lighten the color of your eyes I don't know much more about this subject but these are the things I've heard and I wanted to share them thank you for reading.

While it seems fairly evident that the eyewash may have been curative, I’m very curious how you determined the floaters were brought on by specific diet? The woman I mentioned in an earlier comment was a vegan and strongly favored whole grains and raw fruits/veggies. Before the onset of macular degeneration, she had experienced years of worsening floaters (and then eventually the flashes of light).
My floaters are worse in summer, which I always attributed to the sun, as my eyes are very light sensitive. My diet is omnivore, but I eat far more fresh fruits and veggies in the summer, more meat/fish in winter, since I live in the far north and fresh produce is difficult to come by after September. Dairy intake is roughly the same year round, and I don’t eat refined grains, but my floaters are least when I’m eating the most meat and dairy and baking bread frequently.

While reading all of this thread the thought came up: before we can talk of a cure, we have to know what exactly we mean by 'floaters'. And: where do 'floaters' come from, what is the cause?

As of the begining of this year, I have been noticing filamentous eye floaters in my dominant (left) eye. My next appointment with my optometrist is in August, but I may have to visit sooner to make sure the large bundle of floaters in my eye is not connected with any serious medical condition. I'm hoping the floaters are just stress related, but I'm not a physician, so I can't tell.

"Floaters" usually refers to visible particles suspended in the vitreous humor (eye-jelly) inside the eye. They may dart in and out of vision as the eye moves. When I initially looked up treatment for eye floaters, the only surgeries I found for their removal were either high risk or invasive procedures.

Yes, they are something that's in your view, in your eye. But what are they, how do they come there? Do they come from outside (like air pollution f.e.) or are they produced by the body (the eye) itself? What 'material' are they made of?
Surgery to remove them hasn't even come to my mind. But is it possible to remove them in any way (I mean: can they really disappear?)? All cures suggested in this thread, what do they do to the floaters, in what way do they help?

If the floaters are produced by the body itself, then probably diets will work. But if a floater in fact is damage to the eye, I don't think anything can help (but surgery, which could even cause more damage).

My husband has had odd floaters going on for a while, but never really thought much of it, because he's very stoic like that.  Then he started getting flashing lights spinning at the edge of his vision, especially when looking from side to side, and more noticeably at night. My mother had the same thing some years back, and in her case, what was happening was her retina was detaching.  She was lucky to catch it in time, or she could have permanently lost her vision.  It can go quickly, like hours.  So, we packed him off to the eye clinic at a big local hospital, here in Toronto, and he came back with the scoop on floaters and flashes.  I'll put him on!

Hi everyone! So. Floaters are caused when the vitreous jelly in the eyeball starts to thicken and pull away from the inside wall of the eye.  They're inside the eyeball, so I can't see (ha!) how eyewash would make them go away.  They're actually the shadow cast on the retina by clumps of vitreous matter within the eye  They're usually not harmful, and have a variety of causes, mostly (but not always) aging.  Flashes are caused by bits of vitreous rubbing on the retina and again, are usually not harmful.  If you've had them for a while, you're probably fine, but if they star to change or increase, or you get shadows across your vision, see a doctor immediately.   Those are symptoms of a detaching retina, and you have a limited amount of time to fix it.  Honey on the eyelid is not a cure for this, and the guy in the link says the same thing, so it's not just me... Hope this helps.

A very safe parasite treatment that can be done while pregnant or nursing is homeopathic Cina 6c and Teucrium 200C. One dose of each, twice a day. Do for 30 days as most parasites have a 28 day cycle.

Safe for animals too! Just put one of each remedy in their water each time you change it.

They are certainly many causes for floaters and you can bet they are all diet/nutrition and/or parasite related. My floaters got bad suddenly to the point of creating a big blind spot in my eye. I went to three different eye specialists and they are all over-educated idiots. They will say they have no idea how this happens even though there’s medical research on it. In my case, I had gotten terribly iron deficient anemic and blood work showed severe deficiencies in vit B and D among other things. There is plenty of evidence showing that all three of these will cause the jelly in your eye to liquify (the cause for floaters and much worse). What’s frustrating is the eye specialists have no clue (Or refuse to acknowledge) that diet is a big part of this. Getting your body clean and finding out what it needs is the key to fixing this issue. I also have Lyme rumbling around...

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, problems with the eyes are related to the liver. while liver ailments are related to anger, especially suppressed anger.  Maybe something in that?

Okay, It's been two to three years since I first started noticing a filamentous floater in my left eye. To make matters worse, this is my dominant eye so I tend to notice it more in my field of vision. I will continue watching this thread and hopefully I can make some dietary and lifestyle changes to lessen the severity of the floater in my field of vision because I still have no reason to get a vitrectomy.

Keep in mind that several pharmaceutical drugs are metabolized through the liver. I don't usually read the side-effects on my anti-anxiety pills (five different drugs, Ugh!), but I'm wondering now if any of them can impact the severity of eye floaters. I will check with my primary care physician just to make sure. I'm hoping I can find a physician that is trained in holistic medicine and is able to connect lifestyle and dietary habits with overall health.

Emily, I just read your old post tonight.  I have a co-worker who has been dealing with these floaters for a few decades.  From what I've come to realize is, there are 2 types of floaters.  On the surface of the eye or in the inner vitreous fluid of the eye itself.

I had cured my inner vitreous fluid floaters by making a dry spice formula of turmeric, cayenne pepper and black pepper.  Wish it was as fast as your treatment as an eyewash.  This took several months.  I tend to like curry on my foods, so in this case, I make a curry like spice combo as mentioned.  From pizza, pasta, stir-fries, eggs, you name it, I kept up with the practice.  I love Franks Hot sauce.  Their moto is, put it on everything.  From suffering almost 4 decades of large and small floaters, my last eye doctor visit mentioned, I had none.   Today, they have a modern treatment using the computer to scan in inner eye vs. adding those drops to make your eye dilate big for hours.  In the computer scan, no floaters were spotted.

Years ago I had discovered this site and the benefits of cayenne.  Wish I knew back then how to prepare the mentioned formulation and removed the floaters 20 years earlier.
