She earned it by being the loudest meow'er during breakfast. However, I really can't take credit for this... Dez is the one who names all the cats round here.

In the event there are still unbelievers somewhere in cyberspace, I'd also like to remind you that Donkey is perfect in every way.

BRK #508

The first full day back after over a month away. Thank you to all the well-wishers.

...And welcome to new Boot, Ava!

Spring has sprung around here. The crocuses are up and at 'em.

At Basecamp today, Ava and I lit up the Season Extender: a rocket mass heater built underneath a hugel berm. The goal is to have sweet potatoes growing on there throughout this year. By using the Season Extender, we hope to start earlier and end later than the typical Montana growing season, and so have a bountiful crop of sweets come October-November. We're also going to do some experiments, starting tomorrow, where we grow kale on the Season Extender as well as a normal control hugel berm, noting the difference in yield, season length, and so on.

Anyhow, this morning's test-firing went smoothly. A full-fledged, full-fired burn happens tomorrow and we'll put in some kale.

We also hiked around the Lab today, and while there I snapped a few photos of the Sepp Holzer Root Cellar project. Here's one of them. It's interesting to note that in some of the shaded areas of the Lab, we still have pockets of snow and ice. Things melt during the day, then re-freeze overnight. You can see some inside the root cellar here, in the areas continually in shade through the day.

That's all for now. Thanks for reading, and enjoy your day...!

Did she object to the moniker 'Jaundice'?

She grudgingly accepted it, from what I could tell. She's graceful and classy like that.
Fortunately, it was an easy one to let go. "Donkey" is more a badge of honor and distinction, and in my view much more fitting.
