BRK #572
A rainy day, and still full of progress.
The big
project for today was to start the
Bobra Line. This is the third of three cables used to string-up sunshades for the summer events. We want to have this done prior to 1st July, when the
PTJ begins. The design is almost identical to the
Bob Line, though the counterweight (AKA
"Bobra") will be adjacent to the vertical support pole instead of the
Bob Tree.
To help illustrate the ideas to the rest of the team, I drew a couple diagrams. In this first one, it's a side view of the support pole and the
"dead man" logs used to support the pole from below ground. The vertical support pole will be 7 feet deep in the ground, the dead man will be beneath it, and then everything
underground will have a "gravel sock" surrounding it to prevent moisture intrusion. We hope to discourage rot and mildew from affecting the strength of any
wood under ground.
The second diagram is a 3/4 view, helping to explain the composition of the underground supports. The dead man logs are perpendicular to the support pole, and are set at a 90-degree angle to the direction of the cable. One dead man log will have a "knee brace" between it and the vertical pole, while the third will have a pair of cables attached to it.
We set to work digging the trenches for the dead man logs today. Here we were at the start:
WWOOFers Sofia and
Jim, and
SEPPer Clay, are pictured.
At the end of it, we had moved a considerable amount of earth, and I estimate the trenches are close to half-done.
Finally: one of the unnamed cats at Allerton Abbey had her kittens...! I can see one here, but according to
Ben, who took a second look, there are at least two.
That's all for now. Thanks for reading, and enjoy your day...!
