wheaton labs is comprised of two pieces of property:

base camp

base camp is a ROCKY, very hilly chunk of land with a steep rise culminating in a 500 foot little peak that we call the "hollowed out volcano with good submarine access" and has:
  • good well water
  • on-grid electricity
  • wifi
  • outdoor willow feeder "willow bank" (like an outhouse)
  • outdoor (rockety wood-heated hot water) shower shack

  • the lab

The lab is two miles from base camp along a paved, then gravel, then steep dirt-sometimes-mud-or-snow-adventure road. It is a much larger, more diverse, forested property surrounded by US forest land. lab features include:
  • off-grid
  • no wifi
  • solar electric power via the small "voltzwagon" at Allerton Abbey
  • solar electric power via the "solar leviathan" at Cooper Cabin
  • no water source yet (bring water from base camp)
  • limited cell service, some places no cell service
  • two outdoor willow feeders - "the chateau de poo" and the "willowonka" (next to Cooper Cabin)
  • lots of wildlife - including black bears, so please store food properly to avoid attracting bears

Longer term rentals are available - please inquire.

We also have acreage / bare land available per our shallow roots (3 years) or deep roots (lifetime) programs.

    Hi,
When I click the link to look at the open dates for the Love Shack, Hipcamp just keeps asking me to log in again, (which I have a login, and then do), but then it doesn't actually show me the available dates.

I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong.

Anyways, what's the next best way to check two particularly peppy date ranges? Is that a Coco PM?
    Thanks!

I don't know anything about hipcamp or openings, but I think PMing Coco seems like a really good idea!

Oh, thanks for alerting us to that, Ash! We'll try to fix that link.

And Nicole is right, that besides posting here, a PM to Coco is good, too.

I believe the Love Shack and Shan-delier are open and ready for renting. There should be a bunk in the bunkroom, too. There might also be options for "slumber party" at Cooper Cabin and a bunk at Allerton Abbey, but I need to verify.

Let me get back to you!

I asked Paul what's available. (Tenting is, of course, free!)

    The Love Shack
    bunk in the bunkroom
    RMH Tipi
Slumber Party at Cooper Cabin The rate for Slumber Party at Cooper Cabin is $150.00. Here's a direct payment link for that: Slumber Party at Cooper Cabin

    The Love Shack

Yes please. I Wanted to check in about specific dates before I pay. Can I be a SEPPer Before/after event and rent the love shack for 14 days?
I could arrive as early as the 16 or wait til the 18 and stay after the event.

Is this the best place to sort out these details or is a purple moosage better?

I asked Paul, and whatever days work for you, work for him. No one is already renting it before or after the event. So, just pick the dates that work best for you and post them here or email them to me--I think you have my @permies.com email from our communication about other events? And then just paypal Paul the amount using the Love Shack 14 night rate link

I don't know if this information is useful for planning processes: Some of the instructors will be there on the 17th to have time to settle in. So, if you come early, you won't be the only one!

Is there a status update on rentals during  the PDC+PTJ+SKIP in June 13- July 24,  2021. I am interested and considering staying in a rental for some of the time if available.

Looking into a rental during the 2024 Garden Master course - is it madness to stay at the Labs and plan on hiking to/from base camp daily? I imagine there will be some snow, in January!

Hi Lorelei! I'm Stephen, the High Commander of the Boots right now. To sum up: walking is certainly possible and has been done quite a bit. There are other transport options that I'd also recommend.

We typically suggest transportation of some kind from the Lab to Basecamp, particularly in the winter. A walk takes somewhere within 20 to 40 minutes one-way, based on your walking pace, and that's without snow. The walk back is uphill, and will be in the dark.

In the past, Boots have provided a ride prior to breakfast in the morning, and then in the evening after dinner (or in the case of the GMC, a ride back after the evening presentation). Also, guests have borrowed an ebike, though if there's any snow or ice, I strongly, strongly discourage use of them to go up and down the mountain. The risk of injury - particularly if you're unfamiliar with ebikes - is significant.

EDIT: all that said, if you're someone who can hack outdoor hikes in cold weather, then go for it. We have a SEPPer right now who makes the round trip at least twice each week, and has been here for over a year. Paul just mentioned to me that in the past, there was a SEPPer at the tipi back in the day who made the trek to and from Basecamp every day through the cold season, and apparently she enjoyed it immensely.

    Hi Eve and S,

Unfortunately Love Shack and Red Cabin are both already rented during the PTJ. When the ticket blitz ends, I will send you (and everyone else) a questionnaire to fill out and after I get your responses I will follow with an email about the available rentals.

I would like to rent the Dog Star from June 15 to July 15, encompassing the two weeks preceding 2024 PTJ, to build a prototype dog run with skiddable shelter, and this year's PTJ.

I may have complicated things by sending a PayPal payment of $450 via an old link. Please send me a fresh link for the full amount of $950. Occupants will be my partner Jessie, me, three dogs.

    Thank you, Holly

Hello, Saana, I understand from Tina that you are sending emails to folks wanting to rent living space around and during the 2024 PTJ. I hope the Dog Star still is available for the dates I noted in my previous post above.

I sent three $450 payments today via PayPal: one for the Dog Star cabin; two for two Tix Blitz PTJ tickets. I know I'll owe an additional $500 for Dog Star, if I have won the cabin reservation lottery.

Hoping to hear from you soon.
