General
The PEP sand badge is made entirely of projects that can be done in any apartment.  So the PEA badge is to complete the PEP sand badge plus a bit more.

Sand

Complete the PEP Sand badge
Complete the following 4 PEP Straw BBs:
  - Start a button jar
  - Harvest fabric scraps for future sewing projects
  - Sew on a button
  - Create a textile toolbox or hussif (sewing kit)

what if... instead of twine, they make  yarn?  easier to source materials in town.

or harvest yarn from an old sweater?

I totally agree with R.

And in my opinion even in town it's possible to find materials 'in the wild' for making cordage and weaving a basket. There can be parks, empty places where weeds grow, or trees alongside the street and there you can find bark, nettles, etc.

I can't remember if PEA includes foraging for materials in parks and stuff.  There are some pretty hefty fines where I live if you take the wrong bit of plant matter from the wrong park.

Sorry, I read now in another thread that PEA doesn't include any search for materials outdoors. I did not yet know that.

That will make it much more difficult! Both for you who are making the BBs for PEA, as well as for the people who want to do the PEA-path. As far as I saw it now it's easier for me to do the PEP BBs than the PEA BBs! I have a garden (not a large one, but it's a garden) and I can forage in town parks, it's allowed here, if you only pick ripe fruits and take dead branches.

I think having it be spinning yarn or twine would be good. Most craft stores now have roving for sale (it's often cheep and not well-cleaned, but it can be bought.).

Another idea would be to make thicker twine/yarn from store-bought yarn or twine.

Maybe the yarn section could be:

--make thicker twine or yarn (rope?) from existing twine or yarn (apparently when you take yarn and twine it like that, it's rope making!)

--unravel a sweater to harvest yarn

--spin roving to make yarn

Any place I could use a pin loom?  Mine are wood with nails and are about 4 by 4 inches square...

For spinning I would simply say make thread, yarn, or twine from any fiber.  Different places will have different fibers available and there are folks who have allergies to wool even well cleaned and prepped wool for spinning....  or it may be totally unavailable in their are.  Wry grin sorry but wool for me means something from a sheep.

I don't know much about pin looms, but the weaving BBs in the Straw level don't require you to use a specific type of loom. Ingenity in looms is encouraged!

And, you don't have to do BBs in any sort of order. If you find yourself weaving a belt, you can submit pictures to the weave a belt BB.

.....Waaaait, I just realized this is the PEA (Permaculture Experience for Apartments) Textile badge, and not the PEP (Permaculture Experience According to Paul) Textile Badge. From what I understand, though, the PEA textile badges will look a lot like the PEP textile badges. Most of the Sand and Straw PEP textile stuff can be easily done from an apartment, and so I think a lot of the BBs will overlap. I think if you complete a PEP textile badge, you can apply it to PEA, though I'm not 100% sure how that all works out.

required list (complete all 7 BBs)
start a button jar (harvest buttons from old shirts) - yes
harvest fabric scraps for future sewing projects - yes
sew on a button - yes
create a textile toolbox or hussif (sewing kit) - yes
mend a hole - invisible mending (pick one) - yes
 - re-create knit fabric (possibly a sock) with knit-stitch darn
 - reenforce woven fabric where it is thinning or starting to make a hole
 - invisible mending a small hole or tear in the fabric
 - add a patch to torn fabric so that it is invisible from the outside (kaketsugi)
sewing machine maintenance - maybe???
make a small loom capable of weaving a belt - yes

It looks like almost everything on this list is easy to do without buying special materials or equipment.

The sewing machine badge is a bit more difficult as most apartment dwellers I know "don't have room for a sewing machine"

I still think this is an important skill.  So what to replace it with that is equally as awesome?

It doesn't appear that you have the PEP Sand badge completed yet.  That's one of the prerequisites for the PEA badge...

Thanks Mike - I’m starting to question my own sanity - I even wrote down the requirement.

It looks like it's time for me to write you a reality check! Or maybe a tiny ad!
