Here is my submission for the Natural Medicine Aspect - Sand for Straw - Make a Mullein Root Decoction BB.

I harvested Mullein Root and made a decoction this week.  I harvested three plants only one of which had gone to seed.  The next morning, I diced up the root and added it to a pot of boiling water.  I decanted/strained the liquid into a labeled jar.  I also put up the mullein leaves to dry.

To document the completion of the BB, I have provided the following:
  - Mullein root (either being harvested or just harvested)
  - Making  the decoction
  - Finished decoction in its labeled jar

Scientific Name: Verbascum thapsus
Common Name: Mullein
Part of plant: Root
Location: backyard, Siloam Springs AR
Harvest Date: 8/22/2022
Dry Time: 8/22/2022 3 PM - 8/25/2022 8 AM
Drying location: 120 degrees for 3 hours, then 100 degrees for a couple days. Just started using a new dehydrator that has a timer, so this took a little longer because of that.
Drying Method: Electric dehydrator.

The method I used to make the decoction.
- 1/2 to 1 ounce (1 to 4 tablespoons) of dried herb.
- 1 1/2 pints of cold distilled water.
- soak in the water up to 12 hours.
- slowly bring it up to a boil
- simmer between 10 and 30 minutes.
- let cool.
- labeled and stored in fridge.

Another remedy I made this fall at a medicine class was mullein root decoction. I've heard it's the bees knees for chronic back pain. This mullein came out of my garden.

I used a 1:4 ratio of root slices to water and simmered 30 minutes. I had just used the same pan to make fennel seed syrup, so I left the dregs of fennel in the pan for the root decoction. Yum.

I'd never disparage any recipe but I will say that general terms for ailments might be better being more specific. Like: "back pain" might need to be more specific because it's a complex system.  Ex: is the pain nerve pain? muscle pain? skeletal pain? See where I'm going? Anyhow, LOVE plant medicine.
