Well I just went down a bit of a rabbit hole looking into the Proenneke hinge which features in the Low Tech Lab movie. Here at permies we have a badge bit in the PEP program (part of SKIP) to make a Proenneke hinge - so if you get round to making one after watching the movie, do make sure you log it here too

The PEP page has this delightful clip of Dick Proenneke himself (from 'Alone in the Wilderness' fame) giving a brief run through of making the hinge:

What a legend.

Anyone wanna talk about the giant wooden hinge?

Or free-hand chainsaw milling a giant rootball and ebiking it down the mountain?

There are 1416 backers! Wow. That is real close to the number that the Garden Master Course Kickstarter got. I wonder if we might break the record for backers in this campaign?!

Here is a little bit more about Katie Williamson!

"I did an herbal apprenticeship with Susun Weed up in the woods of New York in 2020. I studied to be a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner back in 2015. I have worked for the Weston A. Price Foundation and am incredibly grateful to Dr. Price´s book "Nutrition and Physical Degeneration" for changing my life and entire existence; ancestral food ways and medicine making is part of my path in large part thanks for Dr. Price´s inspiration. I am also a certified Sivananda yoga teacher. I have a YouTube channel in Spanish called Yo Soy Fermentista that teaches people all over the world about fermentation and herbalism."

Getting closer to that next stretch goal!  There always seems to be a strong surge at the end and people missing out on pushing their pledges up to the $100 level to get access to the stretch goals as well as to support Paul and the lab....why not get ahead of the game and do it now?  Doing it now will help the final tally come in stronger to support this wonderful site.  Please and thank you!

Here is a picture from the Low Tech Laboratory Movie!

Alan Booker was looking for a good place to build a spring terrace.

Alan's assistant Chase, is digging into the lush meadow with the excavator.

I am really looking forward to hearing more about the rocket kiln. I'm an aspiring ceramicist and the thought of being able to build my own efficient and effective kiln in the future is exciting and empowering. The idea that there are people out there collaborating and developing all the technology in the movie is really inspiring for future plans and things you don't even know you want or need yet! Can't wait to see it!

Yes! Excited to make this one too!

I'm really interested in having some tasty, refreshing, healthy drinks to quickly grab, or maybe even to mix with something a little harder on the weekend :) The medicinal/herbalist aspects are also enticing to me, but if this isn't your thing maybe you'll simply be interested in making some easy delicious drinks, which also happen to be pretty beneficial too.

I'm looking forward to the blueberry soda (maybe that's what the mystery juice is?) and herbal lemonade in particular!

I hope the fermented drink looks as good as it tastes! I want to try to get my girls into these rather than conventional pop and even rather than store bought flavored carbonated water. I'm really looking forward to the fermented drinks tutorials.

I love fizzy fermented bevs.

Let's see.

I've done bottle conditioned fizzy kombucha
A sort-of mead conconction
switchel
cider
whey soda

we've done some of the above with our herbs - tulsi, juniper berries, elecampane, and some others.

But looking over Katie's class, I think I will learn a LOT.

I love how she weaves deep herbalist understanding into the approachable, fun, and practical topic of soda-fermentation.

Anyone else out there fermented bevvies at home?

I used to make water kefir a lot, and one year I used water kefir to make an amazing lightly alcoholic fermented grape juice - blended whole red grapes into water kefir, bottled it up, and let it ferment a few days. It was like a sweeter pink champagne. Delightful to drink, but I hadn't burped it and incautiously opening the first bottle did paint the kitchen walls pink!

Just thinking what I have in my garden that would work well for a medicinal soda - I'd love to try elderflower fizz, elderberry fizz, and lemon balm soda. If we can beat the birds to some cherries this year, that would be yummy, too!

I really want to see the Kickstarter $ counter reach $70,000 so we get this bonus! https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/paulwheaton/low-tech

I like to make Rejuvalac.

It is water from fermented wheat sprouts.  They make a fizzy, tangy lemony drink.

You can blend it up with fruit or cucumber to make a special drink.

I also love to make very strong medicinal herbal or mushroom tea and use that to make kombucha.  It is an easy way to get my family to drink good medicine.

I like to make ginger beer with a ginger bug that I lovingly tend to and feed each day (like a pet) In the subtropics where I currently live, ginger just loves growing here which is excellent for me as I'm a bit of a ginger nut!

I'm interested to learn other methods of making ginger beer as I don't always have success with the fizziness.

PS. in Australian dollars seems we have now passed $100K. Strewth!
