I’m looking for some recipe testers for my upcoming cookbook, and also possibly general feedback on it. No experience is needed other than some basic cooking experience and the ability to follow recipe instructions - I’d like to get feedback from cooks of all levels.

I am looking for people who are keen to cook with cold/temperate climate local foods. It’s a book that teaches homestead kitchen skills as well as useful everyday recipes, so if you’re keen to learn how to do stuff like make cheeses, butter, bacon and cured salami, preserve fruit without cane sugar, make jams, pickles, chutneys, ferments, 100% wholegrain sourdough bread and more, all done in a simple off-grid suitable way, then testing for this book might be something you’d really enjoy. There's plenty of recipes that can just be tested on their own too, so even if you don't want to do the homestead kitchen skills stuff, you'll still find plenty of recipes to try.

I’ve been slowly working on these recipes for several years, and they’ve already been tested by me. I am interested to hear about how they work in other kitchens in other parts of the world, if the instructions are clear, if there’s any improvements that can be made to the recipe or instructions, feedback on serving sizes, cooking times/prep times listed, and any other general feedback.

It’s a traditional foods book, with plenty of options for gluten-free and paleo people, and some vegetarian recipes too. It’s not suitable for vegans. A minimum of kitchen stuff is needed - no electric gadgets are used at all in the book except in a couple of soup recipes. The recipes are suitable for wood stoves as well as electric and gas ones.

A sneak peak of some of the stuff covered in the book can be seen here: https://www.instagram.com/nourishingpermaculture/

It’s volunteer work, but everyone who tests 5 or more recipes will get an ebook copy of the book, and anyone who tests 50 or more recipes will get a physical copy of the book. You’ll also get access to a secret forum here on Permies, and access to an exclusive online cooking club once the book is out.

I’ll also have a section in the book thanking recipe testers, so you will also have the option of being personally thanked in the book, or can remain anonymous if you prefer.

If you’re interested, please say ‘yes’ as a reply here or PM me. Any questions about it can be answered either here or in PM.
Staff note (Kate Downham) :

The call for recipe testers is now closed. Thanks so much for your responses.

If you've missed out on testing and love the sound of this book, please keep an eye on the dailyish email, where I'll post more news of the book once it's available.

I don't know the cooking background of everyone involved, so I may still have room for some testers who cook from scratch for 5 or more people every day, and possibly also strict WAPF/traditional foods cooks, please PM me if either of these sounds like you.

Kate, I am very interested. I am lacto/ovo/pescatarian... but you say there is still many recipes to test.
I have a decently stocked kitchen, I am a decent cook (though I don't usually use cook books).
I am a terrible baker! If you have recipes that can help me bake I would be forever indebted to you.
Let me know how I can help!

I would love to help as well, I do a lot of preserving and baking, but since I am not in the US I do not have the US standard equipment for it (pressure or waterbath canner) I have only done salami and dry cured ham once. My kitchen is pretty well stocked with equipment, glad to here there's not many electrical gadgets though, as those I don't have!

I don't need any more taste testers. If you can cook, then you can become a recipe tester if you'd like to cook the recipes yourself?

If you want someone to idiot-proof the recipes, I'm in. I'm *really* not so good at following directions, so if anything is unclear, I'll find it for you. I have cooked for years, do a sourdough no-knead bread, and bake low-sugar muffin based "cakes" and everyone's happy to eat them. I have one recipe I've done for "corned beef", but using duck legs, and would love to learn prosciutto if that's in the book (but again, I'd be using duck, or maybe venison).

It would be good to have you on board, Jay, please feel free to visit the forum and test recipes (or read them to see if they're clearly written).

Yes, I would be happy to help if I am able. (Sometimes ingredients I am used to having in the States can be hard to come by in Australia but I am sure there are many recipes I could help with testing.) I am no chef, but I do love to cook!

Ooooh, how did I not see this! Can I still join? I'm trying to eat only food from my garden and from local farmers!
I eat all the seasonal veggies and fruits, of meat I tried so far: lamb, duck, chicken, beef, rabbit and I'm looking to buy mutton, goat, pork (of which I only bought homemade sausage and ham from a local person), goose (which I will get soon). I have the edible Helix pomatia snail in my garden, which I keep, and I want to learn cooking that too, but I'm not willing to eat it anytime soon ;)
I don't really have access to fish, crayfish and such (at least they're not very local) and recently the local rivers were poisoned (probably by manure, after heavy rainfall) so I'll probably not get any local foods of that kind.
Of the veggies, I have lots of potatoes that grow everywhere! I didn't want them but they just grow. Now they caught a disease (rain again) which can also spread to my tomatoes sadly...
It's harvest time now, so I will also have access to less common flours, because there is a renovated historic mill nearby and they have a nice variety of stuff.

We are big fans of "homestead" cooking and making use of everything we farm, forage, feed or butcher on the homestead!

I'm definitely interested (on my wife's behalf).  She's a much better cook, and we just moved to Nova Scotia (from Florida) so we've got access to all sorts of cold weather crops we never had before.  We also have a proper cold room in our house, and we're very interested in canning, pickling, etc.  We're vegetarian, but we're considering eating a bit of very local seafood.  Thanks!

I would love to help test recipes!  I am very interested in the gluten free parts as well, since I cannot eat wheat.

My wife and I would probably be able to test a number of recipes; we each approach cooking differently so it could be an interesting experience.

Sounds fishy. It smells fishy too. You say it's a tiny ad, but ...
