This is a badge bit (BB) that is part of the PEP curriculum.  Completing this BB is part of getting the sand badge in Natural Medicine.

For this BB, you will harvest, dry, and store enough thyme leaf to make a tea, infusion or decoction.

To show you've completed this Badge Bit, you must post:
- a picture of the fresh herb being harvested
- a picture of your herbs drying (hanging, in a dehydrator, in a bag, etc.)
- a picture of your herbs in a sealed and labelled container, with the label indicating where the herbs came from, the method of drying, and the date

After taking the thyme off the stems... I realize I harvested way too little! Luckily, my thyme needs pruning anyway so I'll be harvesting more tomorrow :)

Here's my page on thyme copy and pasted from my word doc natural medicine journal.

Thyme
Thymus Vulgaris
(perennial, evergreen)

Growing Thyme
Plant cuttings in Spring: full sun, 12-24 inches apart, drought tolerant.
Harvest when needed and right before flowers bloom (cut off tips of stems, leaving 5 inches below.) Prune 1-2 times a year after first year. Replace/divide 4 year old plants for more flavorful leaves and less woody plant.
Infusion and Decoction
Chest infections, stomach chills, or irritable bowel syndrome.
Tincture
Diarrhea associated with stomach chills. Combine with other expectorant herbs for chest infections.
Gargle
Sore throat (infusions or diluted tincture)
Compress
Lung complaints and muscle pain: Hot pad soaked in tincture.
Mouthwash
Gum disease.
Syrup
Coughs and lung infections.

Harvested thyme from my garden and dried in rack in my garage. Stripped the tiny little leaves into a jar for cooking this winter, yay!

I like including the flowers as well as leaf. It adds some colour to what invariably turns a rather dull green, which makes me happy and I think it just looks more appetizing for food purposes. For medicine it`s usually long time soaked which will make sure enough of the good stuff seeps out into the carrying agent anyways.
tl;dr: Leaf dull, flowery leaf pretty

I mentioned this already in the peppermint BB, but I'll discuss it here as well because I planted the thyme in amongst the peppermint.  I planted the thyme this spring into one of two "Hügelkultur water troughs".  They are metal water troughs that have holes in them so no longer function for their intended purpose.  So I filled them about 2/3 full of log rounds and then topped with soil.  The thyme is doing ok, but could have used more frequent watering this summer and as a result I cannot take a large harvest.  Here I harvest some of the thyme to dry.

Continuing to build my reserves for winter. Thyme is a staple for dry cough in our household. We will brew a big thermos of it and keep it at our bedside during the night, or bring it to sip on a school and work.
