Make a sign - PEP BB dimensional.sand.sign

I was looking forward to this BB - i love wood burning. I had a hard day earlier this week and chose to make my sign one night to cheer myself up!

I used a rough piece of used pallet wood from a heat treated pallet (not chemically treated) as it fits the esthetic of my shed. I'm very happy with the results!

Burned a wood sign based on one I saw in the Hong Kong airport. Salvaged wood, basic burning stylus, tung oil.

To complete this BB, the minimum requirements are:
- At least 5" tall by 18" wide
- Some means of hanging or posting the sign
- No treated wood
- Lettering and images are burned
- Must finish with tung oil or linseed oil (or else the burned image disappears)

The sign is just over 5inches by just over 18inches. I hung the sign using hemp twine and drilling 4 holes. The wood wasn't treated but it was oiled with linseed oil.

I finished my chicken yard and it needed a name, bonus points if you can guess the book I mimicked

This board came from a cedar fence picket, trimmed down. Overall size 5.5x22.5”

I used a router to carve out the letters, burned the sign with a propane weed torch, sanded it, then put linseed oil over it.
That said, I’m wondering if linseed oil is entirely needed with this style? Would the letters still fade?

My sign was made from 2x6 #2 pine finished with Linseed Oil during the 2024 SKIP event. It’s a much larger than the minimum required length. I planned to use a propane torch but Paul’s router went missing and a wood burning iron turned out to be a better choice, anyway.  Another SKIPper made the sign “Dances” which was mounted to the same post as mine.

Used this as a two-fer with community living. Branded my relaxation spot in my backyard as Paradise Pavillion.
Added some artwork of birds to fancy it up a bit.

Here’s a sign I made for our patio. The dimensions are 5 1/2 inches by a little less than 20 inches. I used a woodburning tool and linseed oil. To install I used two hooks fastened to the back.

I made a sign using a 2x6 I found in the barn and posted in the new chicken coop. I am honestly in love with how this turned out and now I have an idea of what to do with the giant pile of reject 2x4 ends that I also found in the barn.

I first found the piece of wood and cut it down to 20 inches so it's 5.5" by 20". I then sanded it a bit to clean it up. I designed the sign in Canva and then printed it to size. I transferred the design onto the wood using carbon paper and a pencil to trace the letters and images. I then burned the design onto the wood with a cheap wood burner I got online. The plastic handle kept getting too hot for my hand, which didn't seem safe at all but I got it done. I then oiled it with raw linseed oil, made sure it was super dry, then screwed it to the side of the chicken coop with a couple of screws.

Wanted to give my corner of the garage a name so it can be known as my work space "respite corner" was the name I gave it. It's a resting place for when I'm can actually get some work done.

I decided to make a new sign for my farm. I found a dusty old piece of 1x12 in the scrap pile that was salvaged from something or other. After sanding it a bit to clean it up I laid out my design with a pencil and various helpful drafting tools. Good old trial and error till I was happy enough with it. I burned the design with a cheapo wood burning tool. The next day I cut the shape of the sign out with a coping saw. I think between this and another recent project I might be in the market for a scroll saw, I'd really like one of the old pedal powered ones. I cleaned the rough edges up with a half round rasp and file and then blackened all around with a blowtorch. Next I went to sand the face again to clean it up but a lot of my pencil lines from lay out had compressed the wood and I needed to raise the grain back up by spraying it with water and then letting it dry. During that time I was deliberating on some additional design elements to burn into some of the negative space but ended up decided to drill some more decorative holes. I did this with a forstner bit at the drill press and it was much more satisfactory that the two I'd done with the coping saw. I burned the newly exposed edges and added a new border around the whole perimeter with a pencil run along the edge using my finger as a gauge. After using the wood burner again for that new line and to touch up a couple letters it was ready to sand and oil. Raw linseed oil was used on all surfaces. A couple eye-hooks in the top and it was ready to hang. It looks nicer than I expected and I believe gets me a sand badge!
