PEP BB tool.straw.removerust - Remove Rust, Clean, and Oil a Hand Tool

I borrowed this hand auger for the compound mallet bb. To say thanks to the lender, I cleaned up the auger and bit. Shiny! Hopefully, he will be glad to lend me other tools, since there are several bbs which need tools I don't have (scythe, froe, draw knife, etc.)

I had to look hard to find a rusty tool but, alas, I found a 11/16 wrench that was rusty throughout. I used 150grit sandpapper, wiped it down with vinegar, then wiped it down with flaxseed oil.

I pick up these dividers at an estate sale this week. Nice that it had the thumb screw that's missing half the time. In working order but stiff, rusty , and worthy of some attention. I thought some steel wool and a sanding block would do the job but found some thicker spots of rust and switched to the wire wheel on my grinder. I am fond of patina so don't really like going all the way to bright metal but the results were still rather satisfying. It still shows some character too.  Worked the hinge back and forth with some 3-in-1 oil from the ancient bottle I've had for years. Worked it until it loosened up and stopped exuding rusty oil then gave the whole tool a light coat. Good as new...

Last summer, a friend of mine saw my manual screwdrivers, and mentioned how cool she thought they were. So, when I spotted one at a thrift store, I knew I had to get it for her!

But, I didn't want to give it to her all rusty. I was sure there must be a badge bit for restoring a tool, and low-and-behold there is!

I used vinegar, a steel brush, some sandpaper and paper to polish, and tung oil, and an old cut up t-shirt as a rag.

This poor hatchet has seen better days! I soaked it in vinegar for 2 days, then scrubbed it with steel wool. I oiled it with walnut oil for now. Next I will sharpen it, but that's another BB.
