This Badge Bit (BB) is part of the PEP Curriculum. Completing this BB is part of getting the sand badge in Natural Medicine.

In this BB you will make a decoction from burdock root.  Decoction is a method of extraction by boiling herbal or plant material to dissolve the chemicals of the material, which may include stems, roots, bark, and rhizomes.

Minimum requirements:
  - Make a decoction
  - Strain and store your decoction

To document completion of the BB, provide proof of the following as pictures or a video (< 2 minutes):
  - Burdock root (either being harvested or just harvested)
  - Making  the decoction
  - Finished decoction in its labeled jar

Here is my submission for the Natural Medicine Aspect - Sand for Straw - Make a Burdock Root Decoction BB.  

I harvested Burdock Root near the Clark Fork in Missoula while attending the PTJ 2021 then dried it in the amazing solar dehydrator at Wheaton Labs.  

To document the completion of the BB, I have provided the following:
 - burdock root (either being harvested or just harvested)
 - the decoction being made
 - the finished decoction in its labeled jar

This was one of the few plants I could still spot after autumn- decided I wanted to make a very vivid decoction so here it is.

Burdock going dormant for winter

Uprooted

Cleaned and ready to be cut up



Set it in boiling water and left it for 17 minutes


I let it soak overnight and here's what it looked like in the morning


I strained out the root chunks


and here it is finally labelled

I harvested the burdock root from the wild. I dried the root over the summer, then cut them up them just prior to making the infusion. I used boiling water and let it decoct on simmer for an hour. I then strained and jarred.

I attended Helen's Garden Master Course in January 2022 and give the lectures 10/10 acorns! Fortunately for you, you can also see the Garden Master recordings but unfortunately you'll miss out on the fruit Helen grew and shared. It was the tastiest fruit I've ever had!
This one is mostly for myself because I highly recommend using this BB tracking spreadsheet and I need a faster way to locate it when I want to share it with potential SKIPpers.

I used burdock that I harvested last summer to make this decoction. I simmered it for 30 minutes, let it sit for another hour before I strained and put it in a jar.

I made a burdock root decoction with 23 g of dried burdock root and 1 cup of water.

Here is the burdock root being harvested. You can see more pictures in this post.



Here is the dried burdock root.



When I weighed it out, it was 23 g.



I measured out a cup of water.



I simmered on the stove for 20 minutes.



After it was done simmering.



Straining it out.
