I just tried to buy a copy of the Permaculture Design Manual. I couldn't find a new copy anywhere, out of print I guess. I found a small number of used copies available, for $450 each. I couldn't bring myself to pull the trigger on almost half a thousand. I do not understand publishing, but I would think that if they are selling for $450 a pop there must be a real strong demand for this book. Please, whoever you are who owns the rights to it, reprint it!

Sincerely,
Carl

Thanks I just went there. The shipping from Australia is $77.10 which makes it about $193 to get it here in the US. A lot better than $450, but still ultra steep for most people. I guess I will go for it, Ive been thinking on it for such a long time now.

Don't forget the exchange rate.  $114 AUD is $81.50 USD.  Shipping would be about $55.  That softens it up a little bit at least.  $140 give or take beats $459 by a lot.

I get that it's a tough decision! I splurged on Jacke's Edible Forest Garden Vol II. It was over $150 Can, but I haven't regretted it. It's a reference book, and I keep referring to it! I'd never spend that sort of money on a book I'd only read once or even twice.

Just surprising that it is not available new from anywhere in North America. I guess it must be a book that doesn’t do a lot of volume because it is so large and pricey and so there is not a huge financial incentive to keep it available here.

Maybe the next best thing would be another one of Bill's books:

This is very odd. I got my "Permaculture Design Manual" about a year ago and it was about $80.00 on amazon.  I remember read about a company that imports the book but I can not remember the name. I wonder if one could get say five or more people and get a bulk order of books. I would love to have "The Permaculture Book of Ferment and Human Nutrition" and "Permaculture Design Certificate Course DVD Collection".

They had it in the large metro library where I used to live.  With sharing programs, you might be able to get it shipped in even if they don't show it locally.

Its also worth remembering that this book is basically a text book, and a high quality one at that, so ~$140 is a pretty decent price considering the market for text books

Carl,
I have a hard copy of Permaculture, A Designers' Manual and am happy to do a swap with you, including paying the postage from Australia to USA. My interests include rocket mass heaters, permaculture designer's course. So a set of DVDs or similar would to my mind be a good swap.
As far as I can see, the book is a first edition copy dated 1988 and also has the dust jacket.  I have read it cover to cover many times and now it just sits on the shelf so if it is of use to further improve the world, it needs to be able to do so.  Happy for a swap.
Cheers
Paul

I did eventually end up figuring out that I could order a copy of the book from Tagari publishers in Australia. I'm about halfway through it and it was definitely worth every penny. But I do massively appreciate your offer.

Funny that this popped up just now -- I had just looked Permaculture: A Design Manual up on Amazon and it's well over $600 now!  Was wishing I had kept our copy when my ex and I broke up, LOL!

I am not going to order a copy of it from Australia just now, however, because I've broken my book budget for the month with Polyface Designs by Joel Salatin and Chris Slattery.  I think that one will quickly pay for itself, and I do have Gaia's Garden, among others.

Funny, I just ordered one from the publisher today, to replace my old one. I didn't even look at the price on Amazon.

PermaculturePrinciples has a sale price on it of $95 (down from $114)--but they're out of stock. :/ I bought David Holmgren's Retrosuburbia from them last year, and was happy with their service, so that's another US-based source for it, whenever they get more copies in.

WOW, the prices quoted are amazing.  Perhaps we need to set up a swap page.  Easy terms - the two participants agree on a suitable swap and pay freight.  That way, we know what our commitment is including delivery.
If it is likely to fly, we will need to ask permission from our fabulous permies people.

I’m going to look at the Tagari site next week once I start getting paid on my new contract. If anyone is still interested in buying the book please let me know and perhaps we can put together a bulk order.

The Tagari site seems to be a parked domain (or someone posting all about SEO anyway) now.

Tagari.com is a parked domain. Try https://www.tagaripublications.com/. Unfortunately, it looks like they are running out of copies of the book.

Thinking back to my uni days, £60 to £120 was pretty typical for my specialist textbooks, which is really what the designers manual is. It is not written as a populist easy access/easy reading book.

These texts are typically published as a short print run, and prices get inflated when stock is low. Publishers base their decision to reprint on the expected demand in the market, which despite the high ebay price is probably pretty small.

I have also been able to guide students to go through the tagari website to get it for 115$ +15$ shipping. It does seem easy for people to get sidetracked to pirated ebooks, and extremely overpriced hard copies (ie450$). Maybe if anyone who views this googles the BBB and goes to the tagari website it would help the search order to get it to the top, but I know nothing about search algorithms.

On a similar note, I’d beg whoever has the rights to Bill’s lecture videos to repost them! I would like to be able to share the source material for so much of what I learned from him with his inimitable, if a bit non-pc, charm. I wonder if it was his sometimes insensitive or non-pc comments that made the rights holder take them down. I think he was pretty open minded for an old sea-salt born in Tasmania in the 1930s, and that considering people’s view in their historical context is a form of multi cultural acceptance. Please put the videos back up, the good they can do for the Earth greatly outweighs the harm of a few offhand ramblings, and a disclaimer or subtitled correction of mistaken info could solve that.

Udemy is offering Mollison's video PDC for wayyy cheap and if you buy it you get a discount on the PDM.  They will issue a certificate upon completion, but I do not know if it would allow one to teach or to advertise as having one.
