I just saw a Weather Channel alert that said the Aurora may be visible as far south as Alabama!

I just hope the clouds go away.

This site suggests the west coast's best chance is tonight, and we're still in the green zone for it.

Finger's are crossed.

I went out to take pictures and set myself out with a good view to the North. It was bright but it wasn't clear that it wasn't the glow from the setting sun (we're only a few weeks from midsummer and it stays bright a long time). Just about to give up and then realised it was all going on behind and above me!
Taken toward the South in the NW of Skye, 57ish degrees North.

I'm go glad I bought my GAMCOD camera! Now I want a landscape lens to go with it!

It was faint here, and seemed more whites and pinks, but we saw them. Too dang much light pollution was part of our issue. I think I need to write a letter to the editor suggesting people decrease their reliance on fairy lights, accent lights, close their drapes to keep their inside light inside, put greenhouse lights on timers and have reflective drapes to keep that light in at night, any other suggestions?

Weeellll, a sufficiently (read very) strong geomagnetic storm would be its own solution to light pollution, by frying all the polluting sources. Along with all other electronic devices that aren't EMP shielded...

Oh, SUCH AWESOME PHOTOS!!! We got to see a little bit - some violet stripes and white, mostly. The white was faint, but was also almost the only actual movement we saw much. But, being in Central Missouri, surrounded by trees, I was honestly surprised we saw them as well as we did. If we'd been able to go elsewhere, we likely would have seen a lot more, but we were kinda tired to the house, last night.

Finally!  I saw them.  They were spectacular.  The corona was almost directly above us and they were so bright they blocked out the city glow.

I thought I would be satiated when I saw the aurora, but now I want more!

Watch the skies!!

As of 9:45 AM Central Time Sept 12, 2024, we have had one X class flare this morning, and that sunspot is still rowdy and may throw more, there has been one CME impact already, and more are expected tonight and tomorrow... We are already in a G2 storm, with more impacts expected.

So watch the skies!

Christopher: Yup, that's about what I'm guessing too, based on what's hit already and what's coming up.We just took another high M class flare, the hits are not stopping anytime soon, more CMEs probably coming out of those flares. Watch the skies for the next week if you are in range!

Watch the skies again! Friday or Saturday there's a CME impact coming, not a particularly hard one, but came off an X7 flare. For reference, the highest of the May 2024 solar storms was an X8.7, most of the flares in that storm were below X5. This one is by itself, so it  won't be part of a cumulative pile up, like the May storm was, but it may produce a short lived strong impact brightening of the skies.
Get us pictures if you can!!  :D

Since my last post the sun has escalated. There have been a succession of M class flares (smaller than an X, but still big) and just a few hours ago an X9, officially the highest flare of this 11 year solar cycle. I'm pretty sure it's CME also is aimed at earth.

The X class flares being impulsive, short lived, is a good thing, but they still threw particles out toward us. The M class flares throw less, but they can keep the magnetic field disturbance going in between the higher X class flares, kind of a resonance effect. At this point it's hard to tell, but in general I'd say the auroras have good chances of being visible for the next week or so.

TL:dr:  Watch the skies.

Right now, if you’re in range.

The video is closer to what it looks like to the naked eye (though maybe skip the first half...I should have edited that out). The phone’s CCD captures all kinds of stuff, but I can’t make out in the sky for the stills. But this big red blob is beautiful and rare.

The CMEs from those X class flares came in late and slow, and still were rowdy. There was another X yesterday from that same sunspot, long duration (which means more impact to the CME) and the CME is predicted for a couple of days out, but since the last ones were late and slow, this one's iffy as to when it will hit.

Christopher Weeks: AWESOME!!!  Thank you!!! :D I'm glad you get pictures for us!!  :D

And whee! Another X class flare!  X1.8 yesterday evening, flare was center on the sun facing us, long duration, good sized CME coming off it, no arrival time yet. Good sized proton storm running from it, that always makes for brighter auroras.
Keep your eyes on the skies, this run of solar activity making pretty colors is absolutely not over yet.

Any one in Missouri saw the northern light on Monday?  I looked at the forecast before hand and it only reached Iowa. But next day in the news it was showing people in Texas getting it. Maybe I missed the chance.

Very strong solar storm projected for today, that X 1.8 is expected to hit hard.
Low latitude auroras WILL be visible. Even if you are out of the usual range, check the skies! I am usually out of range, I'll be checking!

The CME hit about 10AM central time, and has been running rowdy all day. We just took a midrange M class flare, that escalated the effect.
At this point (6:50 PM Central time) the aurora prediction looks like this.
Go look! You might be surprised how far south it's going to be visible!!

EDIT: OH! Wow. That's interesting. That's a linked image, and it is updating in real time!

Seems like things are falling off fast, but I don't know how to read their stuff to know if we're in line for another thump. They're saying G3 tonight and last night was G4 (which I think is the highest?), though I've seen better G4s at my place. Maybe they'll issue something later today.

I saw some last night for the first time, but didn’t take pictures. They were mostly green, looking like green flames in the north. They flickered and flashed more than I expected. There were also fast-moving waves and arches that were flung up and out of them, like tongues of flame, and they were constantly shifting.
