UPDATE!  There is currently no wait on the waiting list!

There are many people on the waiting list, but they seem to be waiting long term.  So if two people were to sign up for the bootcamp today, they would get to pick their arrival date to come in a few weeks.

When there is an opening in the bootcamp, we will send an email to the people on the list.  Of the people that reply to the email within 24 hours, the person that has been on the waiting list the longest will be selected.

Getting on the list:

  - when you send in the coin, we send you an email (hopefully in just a few hours).  We send the email to your paypal email address, or your permies.com email address.  So you might want to check those.  I think there are some people that never get the email we send them because their paypal account is set up with an email address they no longer check.

  - follow the directions in that email.  Typically, it is two steps: fill out the questionnaire; reply to the email when done filling out the questionnaire.   I think there are quite a few people that don't do the second step, so we never add them to the list.

  - when you have followed the directions, you will be added to the list and get a note about your current position on the list.

You are on the list and get an invite:

  - you are not required to accept any of the invites.  It is your choice.  Is it a good time to accept?  Feel free to wait.  Although you might want to think about if you are low on the list, you might need to come in winter to be able to get in - because people higher on the list will choose spring and summer.

  - Please reply to the email ONLY if you are certain that you can meet all the details specified in the email.  If you reply and then it turns out that you can't come that day, or something else doesn't work you will be moved to the bottom of the list or removed from the list.

If you no longer want to be on the waiting list, you can say so here, or in a reply to the waiting list email that goes out.

You might want to put a watch on this thread for updates.
Staff note (Nicole Alderman) :

It might be wise to sign up for the waiting list now - even if you don't want to come out now.  That way, when you get an email and you are ready to come out, then you are most likely at the top of the list.

Paul - just to clarify.  If a Permie were on the list and you reached out, but said Permie declined due to not being ready at that time, would Permie remain at the top of the list into the future until ready?  How many times would you think it reasonable to reach out to someone who declines before you moved them down the list, or stopped reaching out at all?

I asked Paul this today, and he was super clear that there are no penalties for saying you're not ready when the email goes out. There's only positives for joining the waiting list early on.

How the waiting list looks like in practice:

(1) You pay $100 and you're on the waiting list--yay!

(2) An opening occurs in Bootcamp. Paul sends out the email saying, "We have an opening, reply if you want it." If you're not ready, don't reply!

(3) Of the people who reply to his email saying in 24 hours, saying, "Yes, I'm ready!!" Paul will pick whoever has been on the waiting list the longest.

(4) Another opening occurs, and Paul sends out another email  saying, "We have an opening, reply if you want it." If you're not ready, don't reply! Someone else snags it, and you've moved up the list.

(5) Repeat steps 3+4 until finally you're at the point where you're ready to accept. Paul sends out the email saying, "We have an opening" and you reply in 24 hours and since you've been on the list so long just biding your time, you get the opening!!

You never have to reply. You will always stay on the waiting list. There are no penalties for staying on the waiting list without replying. In fact, there's an advantage, because the longer you're on the waiting list, the higher the chance is that, when Paul says, "I have an opening!" and you actually are ready to seize that opening, YOU will get that opening.

Further example:

Say there's 100 people on the waiting list, and you're number 99. Chances are many of them won't be ready when Paul says "I have an opening." And over time, people will snag his offer and you'll keep moving up the list. Each and every time there's an opening, Paul emails all 100+ people on the list. And you just keep moving up and up the list over time because you've just been biding your time. So, when you're finally ready to seize the offer, there's a high possibility that you will get it!

Nicole is correct.

Therefore, it is wise to get on the list early.   Then when you are ready and you get the email and four people response (including you) - you will be chosen because you have been on the list the longest.

Awesome! If you haven't already, join the waiting list over at the Bootcamp website. It's a $100 to get on the list, but that $100 lasts forever, and if you come and then leave, you can come back again without paying the $100 again (as long as there are openings, of course!)

I'll add the link to the first post, too, so it's easier for everyone to find!

Thank you,
Looks like it went through August 19th and the email is set right. :) I feel that leaves it all set up for when the time comes. I’m really enjoying the 2017 pdc web edition in the mean time, highly recommended for anyone.

Carter,

You might need to email me.  Maybe reply to the email I sent you when you paid.  My guess is that your permies.com email address is different than your paypal email address.

I think you always keep your position.   I suppose there could be exceptions - but for the most part you keep your position.

I suspect that in the next few days, I might be sending out an email to the waiting list.

In that email, I suspect that two people will be invited to come to the bootcamp provided that:

 - they arrive mid afternoon on October 25

 - they are cool with taking a top bunk in the bunk room

Got your email!  And I want to stay on the list!

On September 13, Paul emailed me, "You are now #14 on the permaculture bootcamp waiting list."

Today, I looked at the Bootcamp Waiting List forum and learned that I need to complete a questionnaire.
Please help! I need the questionnaire.

I was added to the list via email correspondence because I supported the Greenhouse Kickstarter instead of through the bootcamp website.

I just cobbled together this canned message to send to people that have just forked over their hundred smackers:

There are two steps to getting on the permaculture bootcamp waiting list:

  - fill out the questionnaire: https://forms.gle/xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

  - when done, reply to this email to say that you are done!

Once these two steps are complete, I will go and grab your favorite email address from the questionnaire and add it to the waiting list email addresses.

You might want to add a watch to this thread:

  https://permies.com/t/146876

So a few important things to derive from this:

   - if you are using an email address for your paypal that you don't look at very often, you might not see the email i sent you and therefore never end up on the waiting list

   - if you fill out the form, but you never let me know that you filled out the form, then you will never end up on the waiting list

This might also be a good time to point out that hotmail, msn, aol and yahoo email addresses are all shit.  There is a high chance that those services are filtering emails from you - they don't even make it to your spam box, they simply never arrive.

In any of these cases, I am more than glad to accept your money and laugh myself silly all the way to the bank.   I much prefer that you get the emails, reply and we get you out here for the bootcamp.  I cannot control your choice to not read emails, nor your choice of a lame email provider.

FYI,

There are currently 12 people on the waiting list.  A little over a week ago I sent out the official waiting list email announcing two spots open.   Three people asked to come.

If everybody stays through the winter, then I suspect that the next time we will have anybody new will be around the first of january - when (if?) we are ready to expand the number of people that can be in the boot camp.

I did have an idea that there might be a person or two that wants to join and be here through thanksgiving and christmas - and that might be nice.  It depends on lots of things.

There have been a few people coming here through the sepper program.  I guess that is a bit more like an expensive bootcamp.  Come and experience a rocket mass heater in one of our structures, plus join the bootcamp for a half day (or whole day) as it suits you.

I just wrote this to one of the people on the waiting list, so I had the idea to copy and paste it here:

We are currently trying to figure out how to add two more spaces to the bootcamp for this winter.  Once we figure that out, we will bring in two more people from the waiting list.   The last time we asked for two people, three people said they would like to come at that time.

At this moment, we have here:  me, fred, jen, josiah, clayton, scott, martha, dez, brianna and daniel.   Ten.  One heads out in a couple of days, one heads out in a week or two.  One arrives on friday.  Then we have the BB20 event and then two more boots arrive.   So that takes us to eleven.

We have four barriers to resolve to expand the bootcamp:

BARRIER-1:  We can seat 11, for meals, quite packed, in the fisher price house.   We can seat 42 for meals in the classroom - but there isn't a spot to cook there, so the meals have to be brought down.   There are ideas for offset schedules, or maybe a bootcamp team at the lab, or all sorts of ideas.

BARRIER-2:  With the people now, we feel like we are on the edge of what we can effectively manage.  Fred, Josiah and Jen are the current managers.  At the end of the day, if they feel like it was a soul draining experience, then we need to not add people.   So we are having conversations about how to grow - comfortably.

BARRIER-3:  Many people prefer a more private bunk.  Heated, of course.  We have two structures available that currently do not have a rocket mass heater.   We have enough heated bunks for 21 people at this time.  More if you include the couch balcony (which would require a LOT of firewood for such a large space).  Plus a huge space at cooper cabin for a slumber party with cots.  But if everybody needs their own private space, then that drops to ... 7 heated private spaces.   So, in a way, there is no barrier here.  And, at the same time, there kinda is.

BARRIER-4:  Budget.  I'm not sure if I can muster the coin for more people.  I recently tried to amp up stuff for the video patreon, but that fell flat.

Jen just told me she thinks there is a fifth barrier:  our current work rigs are not in the healthiest condition, and we currently need all of them as the group typically gets divided into three (or more) work groups each day.  We used to use EVs to do this like this

But they kept breaking down.  We have this one still, but it is sickly and we haven't been able to mend it.    I wish we could replace it with something electric and reliable.

The point of this post is to say that we are trying to figure it out.    We might ask for another person or two around the first of november.  Otherwise, maybe the first of january.

I understand the fee is waived for those of us who have already sent coin to join in some festivities there.  If this is true can I get myself and my wife on the waiting list?  I'm strongly considering spending some time as a boot when the lease is up on my apartment in April.

I just added somebody to the waiting list and told them that they are #18 on the list.   And I spotted a name on the waiting list that is no longer waiting, so I took that name off of the mailing list - so that person at #18 is now #17.

I need to also point out that when I last called out to the mailing list for two people, three people said they would come.   And later, person #2 could not make it - so everybody got to come.   So for the next opening, there is a decent chance that everybody who wants to come will be able to come.

It seems like there are a fair number of people that are getting onto the waiting list now with the idea of coming sometime in the next several years.  So there might be 17 people on the list now, but the next time we call for people to come, there might be nobody ready to come.

There is a 50/50 chance that in the next few days I will send an email out to the people on the waiting list asking if there are two people who want to join the bootcamp on November 15th.

These people would need to commit to a minimum of one week.  And, we hope, it is something that might last many months or even years.

18 people on the waiting list.  Zero people responded.

If anybody is thinking that the list is too long - this is your chance to come out.

Here is the email that went out:

We are open to two more boots!  If you throw your hat in to this round of coming to the bootcamp, you must:

- arrive on November 15th around 3 or 4 in the afternoon
(or close to that for people that would be flying in)
- commit to a minimum of one week
(And, we hope, it is something that might last many months or even years)

The possible bunk arrangements at this moment look like this:

  https://permies.com/p/1174094

If this is you, then reply to this email.  Of all the people that reply within 24 hours, the two people that have been on the list the longest will be selected.

The '$100 gapper fee waived' is one of my rewards from the greenhouse kickstarter. Does that mean I can go on the boot camp waiting list without paying more? I might want to go next summer if the border reopens.

Kim,

I sent you an email to get you going in the bootcamp.

Of course, since you use hotmail, there is a 50/50 chance that you will never get the email since hotmail might make that decision for you.  Hotmail, yahoo and msn and are all shit.  Your choice.
