Daily Check for Fowl - PEP BB animal.sand.dailyfowl

I checked the trailer coop and the chicken yard for safety and cleanliness. I added wood ash and fresh hay on top of the dirty pine straw little. I did a full clean out last week. I cleaned the water container and checked the food level which was good. I picked up some trash that had blown into the chicken yard. I made sure that the solars panel was clean and clear of obstruction and that the solar door which is on a timer is working well. I collected and inspected eggs. They were all in great shape. My three hens are a year old and laying about an egg each every day. Notice that their sand bath in the old tire was empty so I added sand to that.

Several days of heavy rain have left my quail a bit damp. I cleaned out and refilled the water. The feeder got some gross mush stuck in there and will need some extra care, I set it aside for now and gave them the smaller feeder. Really, they haven't been eating all that much purchased food since I've been introducing them to kitchen scraps and encouraging them to hunt bugs anyway. Dry leaves often contain bugs! I tossed in a few handfuls for them to pick through and to keep their feet out of the soggy woodchips. There was a small dig hole where the soil is loosest. I had a spare bit of hardware cloth that was the perfect size to block that off. Conveniently, one of my hens laid an egg during all of this. She's the first to start laying, just a few days ago. No problems so far!

this mostly needs attention weekly since 5 gallons lasts 9 chonkins a while

2 5 gallon containers sit outside their fence with their feed. The heavy stone has prevented all the pests.

I only have 1 or 2 girls laying ATM so these only get changed every 2 or 3 days, but they needed fresh nesting material when i went out there. Since i did the scythe sharpening BB, i'm trying to dry and use some of my own grass.

birds looked great, coop needed some extra bedding so it'll last to the next changing (every 4 days). Had to fix that roosting bar that fell.


I got this coop for free because some lady got a divorce and i made some of my own modifications. Next year I may sell it if i can build the Justin Rhodes chickshaw this winter.

Thanks Henry for letting me use your quail for my evil plans! You’re the best.  (No quail were harmed in the making of this slideshow).

Before: , snow; and, underneath the inner container but above the outside, lower bowl, some mash had built up: so you need to take the two pieces apart in order to do a deep clean.  (I wouldn't require this for my own criteria, but being extra thorough.)

They don't have nesting boxes really, though they like the little box that may be visible in some photos.  It already had adequate shavings in it.  Instead the daily check they need is their dust bath (poop out; usually I’d just be able to scrape and cover but for the badge bit it’s a deep clean;then  fresh, dry dirt in)

Before:  sharp bits on edge of hardware cloth on bottom and side–possible pricking hazard, though it has never been a problem (only blood they’ve ever shed was from a male pecking another male);

After: hardware cloth folded (simple solutions are sometimes the best

Before: under-fire dirt floor a bit full (it’s hard to see, but it was about 3-4” thick in places with dirt, poop, and shavings)


After: emptied it and added fresh wood shavings and dirt (suburban situation, they need to be hidden on the owner's porch)  You’re welcome, Henry.  Or should I call you Tom Sawyer??

Crap, I forgot to mention my badge bit submission is in two parts, I redid some today (with the snow) and that's why there is snow in some pictures and some without.  I realize this might be confusing.

Forgot to mention also that they don't lay in winter, even with lights, if it's too cold.  They're hardy to low temps but stop laying, and their owner just gives them a break during the coldest weeks.  I don't know about chickens but that's how it is with quail.  You could keep them inside longer and force them to lay, but the indoor hutch has much less ventilation and no wire to drop poop below into dirt.  So that's how it is here, and I would imagine other badge bit submissions with quail will be similar.

Well, it seems that it only took me a year to finish this one. Below is the safety check.

What I found is something was trying to dig into the barn, I thought I fixed most of the spots, but someone found one. On the outside I added dirt, and stones, on the inside I added dirt, stones, and hay.

Serviced the chicken coop today. Collected some eggs. Cleaned out the bedding and added fresh shavings.  Thoroughly cleaned the waterer and feeder.  Inspected for pokey bits and other safety issues and didn’t find any because I handled this months ago.  

A day in the life of my suburban hens: Wyandottes, Welsummers, Prairie Bluebell, Olive Egger & Starlite.

These spoiled ladies get soaked grains 2x/day. Mix is whole oats, wheat, peas & sometimes barley, with flax seed and sunflower seed toppers. A little kelp in winter. Garlic & ACV in one of their waterers. They forage in the backyard whenever they can if they don't see our border collie, who will herd them back into their paddock area.  It doesn't take much time to do the daily checks.

Morning: Let free and feed breakfast. Check waterers.  Clean roost area. Check dry food hanger.

Evening: Feed again. Gather eggs, check nest boxes. Check calcium.  Currently using crushed egg shells, but the winter supply is getting low and may have to be supplemented with oyster shell.
