This is a badge bit (BB) that is part of the PEP curriculum.  Completing this BB is part of getting the straw badge in Nest.

In this Badge Bit, you will set up a system for collecting charcoal.

This isn't a system to generate charcoal, this is to collect and store pieces as they are discovered so they can be used for higher purposes.  Perhaps Biochar.

To complete this BB, the minimum requirements are you must set up a system for collecting charcoal:
  • Metal storage can with label

  • To document this BB, post pictures or a 2-minute video depicting the following:
  • Metal storage can with label
  • Charcoal being placed in the metal storage can

There aren't any examples here yet and I'm not sure if this will qualify as I bought the charcoal a year or two ago from a man in Kyoto who makes binchotan (I got it package free, just as it is in a paper bag. No plastic wrapping). Its been kept in a paper bag until now. I use the binchotan for filtering water, as a odour reducer and for humidity control in cupboards (summer gets so humid and I wanted something natural to keep the mold from growing).

Here's my charcoal storage setup. I don't have much charcoal left from winter so this smaller container was perfect.

Here is my charcoal storage system. Have done this already for a while a couple of years ago but had stopped doing it (I went on with just putting the coals together with the ashes meant for the garden). However it's always handy to have some clean charcoal on hand so this BB is a good way to restart a storage bin.

Here's our charcoal bucket ready to hold charcoaly goodness.

The system is straight forward. We collect wood ash & co. in our wood ash bucket until it's getting full enough. We then sift through it to separate ash content from charcoal and metal bits.

Charcoal currently doesn't get stored much in the bucket as we are currently throwing them right into our garden beds to be worked in or inside the compost.
