Here goes take two! Had some old ginger laying around and everyone seems to be getting sick right now, so this is a good time to make a ginger decoction!
I've been drinking this daily for it's detoxing benefits but would love to learn more about how it works and other ways to use different parts of the ginger plant.
Here is my decoction, 1 cup of chopped ginger in 1 litre of filtered water, brought to the boil then simmered for 30 mins. 3 smaller sized jars chosen so I can easily freeze if I don't go through it all in the next few days.
I'll be drinking it 1 part ginger decoction to 4 parts water, still a touch spicy and very refreshing as the weather warms up here in Australia. Store bought ginger as I haven't yet tried growing it, although these are ready to plant out today!

My first attempt at sprouting ginger so I can hopefully be harvesting my own for decoctions down the track.
Minimum requirements:
- Make a decoction
- Strain and store your decoction
To document completion of the BB, provide proof of the following as pictures or a video (< 2 minutes):
- Ginger root (either being harvested or if you live somewhere where ginger does not grow, it may be store-bought)
- Making the decoction
- Finished decoction in its labeled jar
I had more ginger so I decided to make a decoction out of it. I brought the teapot to a boil and simmered the ginger for thirty minutes.
I didn't realize how between this and the infusion BB how much more potent ginger could become. I am going to have to play around with this both medicinally and culinarily. I think there could be some marinade potential here...

I'm getting over a cold/sickness and my husband has now caught it, so it's time for a ginger decoction! I used storebought ginger since it doesn't grow here. I peeled, chopped, and simmered the ginger in a pot for 30 min, covered. It is very potent! When drinking, we'll use 1/4 cup then fill the cup up with boiling water. I think this will help our recovery!
I put ginger in a pot of boiling water for 30 mins then strained.
In this BB you will make a decoction from ginger root. Decoction is a method of extraction by boiling herbal or plant material to dissolve the chemicals of the material, which may include stems, roots, bark, and rhizomes.

I love that Rocket Mass Heaters are Carbon-Nuetral. In Erica's and Ernies Art of Fire Presentation, Erica explains the chemistry of how that's possible!
I attended Helen's Garden Master Course in January 2022 and give the lectures 10/10 acorns! Fortunately for you, you can also see the Garden Master recordings but unfortunately you'll miss out on the fruit Helen grew and shared. It was the tastiest fruit I've ever had!
I made a decoction! Ginger isn't usually hardy enough to grow where I live (PNW) so I used storebought. I've been making ginger teas like this for years but I never realized it was a decoction, so I really enjoyed this experience.
