Remember, they think youtube is a "social network" so they favor videos that have comments and replies to comments!
Comment on each to expand the reach.

Just got my dailyish, went and subscribed, and it said there were already 100K subscribers -- but they could just be rounding up, no?

They could be.

When a channel makes a milestone it takes a few days for the system to check the numbers and make sure everything lines up.

This shows more about how youtube counts the numbers and why it gets hung up on certain numbers.

I think you're on to something with the shorts and SKIP. I would also love to see bloopers as shorts and rocket stove burn tests with big flames would be awesome shorts.

I think you could get a lot more traction with advertising SKIP in general. There are lots of things now for "adults" (typically meaning 18-25s) to earn "merit badges" for "adulting." (I hope you read all those quotes as eyerolls) Although SKIP actually requires you to learn useful skills, I think if SKIP could tap into that Adult Merit Badge program niche then it could help spread the message. I mean, imagine a couple hundred milennials and later tweeting images of peeing on a plant outside for the sand badge...It would really bring some attention to SKIP... and controversy is a marketing tactic that has worked for a ton of other celebs like Madonna for a long  time

I also wanted to say I was super excited when Paul (or at least his account) responded to my comment on one of his videos last week. I feel really honored, even if it was just an excuse to send me to the rocket mass DVD set buy page

It was probably me.

We are all trying to be smarter about how all this works ....   but ...

    - I turned off ads.  The payout for ads is shit and when i started posting vids there was no money in it.

    - I cannot bring myself to say "comment below" or "like and subscribe"

    - I know that it is an 11 minute long video that charms youtube most, but i don't wanna

    - I know that youtube is strongly favoring shorts, but i just don't like it

I just have a lot to say and show so i wanna do that.

At the same time, I am putting in way too many hours, so i gotta figure out the best path to get as much of all the things that i can.

One thing i hope to do more of is excerpts. Excerpts of our highest quality content of all the stuff we have here - so free samples of the movies and classes and stuff.

And I have some more ideas.

Overall, I would really like to get back to putting out a new video every other day or so.

There is a myth going around that youtube won't recommend videos if ads are turned off because youtube needs the ads to make money for youtube and streaming videos is expensive.

My experiments show that I get about half the traffic from youtube when the ads are off than when they are on.  But i cannot bring myself to turn midroll ads on because I hate them.  Just have the ad at the start and end which is the minimum.

Awesome achievement! I go to youtube to learn about things - so for me, quality content that is informative and sometimes entertaining, is the most valuable. I've yet to see a "short" that meets those benchmarks.

I was not displeased. It is a good tactic. I'm just excited you said something to me, seriously. I know how hard it can be to respond to even a fraction of the people that respond to you when you have a large following. Most people as well-known in their niche as you are hire people to run their social media for them.

We are all trying to be smarter about how all this works ....   but ...

Good. Youtube ads suck anyways. Who cares what the algorithm says. I'm partiallly here because you keep doing you and I like it, and when I occasionally don't I at least respect it.

But you have no problem ending a podcast with "if you like this kinda stuff visit us at permies.com" so why the resistance to "Like and subscribe"?

 - I know that youtube is strongly favoring shorts, but i just don't like it

I just have a lot to say and show so i wanna do that.

At the same time, I am putting in way too many hours, so i gotta figure out the best path to get as much of all the things that i can.

Youtube likes shorts because it is how they want to complete with tiktok.  Once again, just continue being Paul. but I would like to say Exerpts could be 30 second clips...think movie teaser shorts...?

And I have some more ideas.

Overall, I would really like to get back to putting out a new video every other day or so.

I hope so Ideas are good. Consistency is good. I believe in you. Thanks for saying hi.

P.S. here is one more idea to compost: Consider asking some of the YouTubers that like a challenge (I.e. YesTheory, Mr Beast) to earn at least one Straw badge in Skip or PEP 1 (or even hold a special Annual permaculture event just for YouTubers ?) I'd also like to see you challenge Mark Rober to design a better rocket stove. jus' sayin'

I'm so happy someone I know is getting a silver play button.  Some people get a cake to celebrate.  I suspect Paul will want a pie instead.

I'm a long way from getting my silver play button, but today I got my own sort of pi.

It is a physical award that is sent to Paul, in the form of a silver play button.

Thank you all for your replies.  I thought it was a clickable button on the YouTube page beside Paul's image; I did  not realize it was a physical trophy.  Cool!  Congratulations again, Paul.

Hey! Maybe start a 100K trend and put a clickable silver play button beside/within your mug on the page?!

I now have 100,902 subscribers.  Yay!

And my guess is that the physical silver play button will show up any day now.

And I have lots of plans for my youtube channel to put out lots of videos.  I will try to have more excellent excerpts from my commercial videos, and lots and lots of videos from my place.

I gotta say that this new leap forward is largely propelled by https://patreon.com/pwvids   --- thanks to these peeps:  Dr. Hugh Gill Kultur, Kyle Neath, Mehron Kugler, Kerry Rodgers, Bill Crim, Dolius, Bill Erickson, Greg Martin, G Cooper, Bryan Beck, Pasquale DeAngelis, James Tutor, danita neu, Polly Jayne Smyth, Opalyn Brenger, William Kearns, Eric Tolbert

I am hoping that in a few weeks I will get back to putting out a new video on youtube every other day.

I have also turned off the youtube advertising on the new videos so people can enjoy this stuff ad free.
