I used grapeseed oil--a drying oil similar to walnut oil on my utensils: a vegetable peeler, a gnocchi board, a spatula, a spoon, a rolling pin, and a cutting board. All look much better now!

Ohsoji (End of the year cleaning) Task 5 - Oil the spoons

After finishing my flipper, I now have 6 wooden utensils to be oiled! Most have been oiled before, but this flipper is drinking the oil like an oilholic. I also honed my knife and cleaned up a few little imperfections before oiling.

Minimum requirements:
 - You must oil at least 6 wooden utensils, cutting boards, bowls, etc.
      - Walnut oil is best
      - If allergic to nuts, explain your oil choice
      - Oil must be edible and not made from petroleum

Provide proof of the following as pictures or a video (<2 mins):
 - Wooden items in need of oiling
 - Action shot of you oiling one of the kitchen items
 - All the wooden kitchen items you oiled
 - Listing the type of oil you used. If other than walnut oil, please explain

Before oiling

I am using perillaseed oil. It is a drying oil common in Japan. This one is FOR food, so it is absolutely food safe. My son is allergic to nuts. Also walnut oil is not readily available here.

Applying oil with paper towels and one to remove the excess. I applied in about two coats to the utensils needing touch-ups and quite a few more for the two that haven't been oiled yet.

After oiling

So I used organic coconut oil because ... that's what I've always used? I even use it on my wooden counter tops. Maybe because I live in a cold climate I haven't had issues with the oil going rancid? I used to have a mild nut intolerance so maybe I'm still subconsciously avoiding it.

The start! 4 utensils & 2 cutting boards

I did the initial oil application with my hands. I find it easier and it makes my hands nice and soft :)

I then removed the excess with a piece of paper towel (That I popped in the fire after)

Finished product!

I used olive oil, as it's what I had around, but also my mother in law has a nut allergy and she uses these almost as much as me.
I chose my collection of spatulas and mixing spoons, and my butcher block island as I use that for cutting vegetables and it's unfinished.
