Yes, i watched some. I lived in a tent in winter before. I know it will be harsh weather, but I have been wanting this lifestyle for many years.

Greetings. I will be in the area mid-week next week for a few days. I'd love to come and spend some days involved in the boot experience. Looks like there are a couple spots still open, is that still the case? I'll gladly pay the gapper fee before dealing with too much logistics (and I have read the FAQ, disclaimers, etc.), just wanted to get a feel for the timing of my visit before forking over that much change. It could be a long while before I'm back in the area again.

Thanks in advance! My reception will be spotty but I will respond when I can.

So while the six people selected for the event will have full access to the event, boots are typically asked to help in a variety of ways - so they sorta kinda get in also.

Does drug free include alcohol free also?

We allow hooch, but we've been through some hooch related shit where we contemplated adding it to the "no" list.

https://permies.com/t/23888/permaculture-projects/smoking-pot-hooch-drugs

We currently say "go easy on the hooch - and handle your own hooch related recycling."   For the first four years, we probably kicked a half dozen people out for hooch related stuff.   And maybe there was another half dozen that we should have kicked out.  The thing is, I would rather have my time spent on permaculture stuff and not on dealing with shit related to hooch.  For the last two years we have had zero problems.   People have been respectful.   Hooch is nearly non-existant.

We had a gal in the bootcamp here last summer and she turned 21.   So jocelyn rolled out a bunch of hooch-like things and everybody was trying stuff.   That was it.

Life here now is really magnificent (knock on wood).   I would hate to see it spoiled by hooch related drama.

I get the impression that nobody here is into hooch much.  Maybe somebody will have something once every couple of weeks or so.

Does this answer your question?

paul wheaton wrote:Christopher,

Make sure you know what you are getting into here.  This is not a refuge, this is about teaching people our techniques through a lot of hard work.

I have always thought that a person could arrive without a penny and do great here, but know this:  every person that has arrived here in the past very low on funds has left.  Every last one.  The people that are still here arrived with coin in their pocket and think that being here is amazing.

Further, the people that arrived with very little tended to exit with enormous amounts of drama.  The people that arrived with coin that elected to go, tended to exit peacefully.

You mention red flags:  dude, from our perspective you are covered in red flags.

Ever since we have had the $100 gapper fee, we have held the position of allowing anybody to come that is willing to part with that much coin.  And we will stick to that until our program is full.  You just really never know a person until you know a person.

I think you need to spend some time learning what you are getting yourself into.  Things here are quite different.

Hi, my name is Julia. It excites me to see someone running a program like this. I have been searching for an opportunity such as this. I currently have a job/reside in FL and am interested in attending your bootcamp on Feb. 7th.
I just have a question before payment:
1) how long should a new booter stay before seeing progress in projects( building/planting/ projects started with a team/group)?
..honestly it all sounds interesting and material i'd like to learn. My only concern is how long I take off work. to try out your program. (asking in advance to request time off).
I feel this is something I've been longing for as a lifestyle and would probably make this opportunity permanent living/working until I felt I had learned enough that you have to offer and am comfortable beginning my own homestead. So just curious on your preference on duration for a beginning booster start off in the program to truly get a feel for it and achievements through ones efforts put into the camp.

When you show up, the work will be whatever is the highest priority at the time.   While simultaneously trying to keep the experiences a little varried.

Most of the people in the bootcamp now have been here for several months.   One person has been here only four weeks or so, but it is her third time here.

Does this help answer your question?

Yes thank you, I have done some thinking overnight; and have decided to just give it my all, leaving the job behind, and shoot for my dream. Besides, IF I come back, I plan to be an excelled version of myself and put my growth to the table to better myself.

Also, silly question, but will you teach one to stay warm throughout the winter? Coming from such a warm climate I feel that would be the hardest challenge but worth it. However, I don't want to get sick before I get started. Maybe like projects for shelters or is there a list I can reference for towards appropriate attire..because even the fluffiest of Floridas jackets are still thin as heck compared to Michigans winter weather.

Jocelyn made this thread to talk about the weather here:

https://permies.com/t/58173/permaculture-projects/weather-wheaton-labs-montana-winters

It snows and stuff, but it isn't all that cold.

December is the coldest month of the year, and the average high is 33 and the average low is 19.  We're in December now and today's high will be 42 and the low will be 27.

These pics might paint a picture:

We don't really teach how to be warm.   But there did seem to be a flurry of cold weather shopping a couple of months ago.   General rules:  avoid cotton, and many layers are your friend.

I'd like to look at the area before purchase n traveling across the country to let my family know I'm all good going solo. If you dont want it on your site, maybe you could email me it , if you're comfortable with that?

I have a strong-but-city-kid who is 14 years old.  If he and I wanted to be boots for two weeks, would he count as a "boot"?   (specifically, if there is one spot open when we are available to come, would be "one" boot together or would we need to have "two boots" worth of spaces?)

So I think what you are saying is that you are the 14-year-old's mom?  And the two of you would come.  Yes?

More awake now ....

Yes, two boots.   At least I am guessing that you would both participate in the bootcamp and boot things, right?   You would each get your own bunk.  And the cool news is that the boot fee is $120 for both of you instead of $100 for each of you.

if you have room for one person from about Dec22 to about the 28th i am interested.
Here is some of my pertinent info: i got the podcasts and have listened to many but nowhere near 200
i am new to almost all of this in practice, though I have helped build a cob cottage. Let me know if you'd find value in my visit. I'm physically strong and I am a morning person. I live in Boulder. If you have room for me and want for my presence, can you tell me how long the drive is for a slow driver?
Tbank you,
Chrissy
