Jenny Jones wrote:Paul,  I've been chatting with Nicole on Wwoofusa and there were a couple questions she wasn't sure of so I'll ask you here. We were discussing coming Aug 2 -16 to get our feet wet ( myself and 13 yr old daughter). She mentioned the WWOOF week starting Aug 16 and that it might be better for us. Only issue with that would be my kiddo starts virtual school that week.  Is there a quiet space for her to do computer work with internet?  She wouldn't be able to help as much during the day.  Also, what are the sleeping arrangements for 2 and do they differ depending on wwoof vs bootcamp?

Sorry for any repeat questions. I tried to find them on the thread but there are so many. Is there a search button in each thread?  I can't seem to find it..

Thank you!
Jen

I wish there was a search function for this thread! You can use the search https://permies.com/forums/search/filters/102, and just search the Wheaton Laboratories forum. Sometimes that's better than just searching the thread because there's bits of knowledge hidden throughout.

I did try to consolidate everything into the Bootcamp website, especially in the FAQ: https://wheaton-labs.com/bootcamp/ (here's the direct link to the FAQ on that page: https://wheaton-labs.com/bootcamp/#FAQ)

Let's suppose that your daughter is going to come for a week of bootcamp with you - and she will be a lovely boot right by your side.   Then I think the thing to do is to pay the $120 for the two of you and come on out.   As a boot, we are pretty good at setting you up with a bunk if you want one - although it is not guaranteed.  The love shack is currently open.

People that come for wwoof week will need to bring their own tent.  Boots are required to put in 40 hours per week, but wwoofers, by the stuff that wwoof publishes, are only required to work six hours per day.  So we tend to favor the boots.

Also, if your daughter is here when she needs to be in school - we do have a lovely spot that has wifi.  But if she is going to be here but not working as a boot (or wwoofer) then I would like to understand what sort of arrangement you propose.

Staff note (Nicole Alderman) :

Link to info about Love Shake (The Port-a-Cabin): https://permies.com/t/29134/labs/porta-cabin-love-shack. Its a little cabin with a bunk bed.

Thank you for the quick response.I decided to take this opportunity with the way the world is going to get out of the city and expose myself and my kid to hard work, community and reward. My goal is to commit to 2 weeks and see how that goes. Being that we do not currently have a home and I run my business online, it should work and could work for longer term if all goes well. Yes I agree coming before the wwoof week sounds best so she wont have school work to do. I'll go ahead pay the bootcamp fee.
Thank you.

haha thank you. Bonding with the internet would only be necessary if she had to do school. We could care less otherwise.

That bunk would be perfect.

Hi!
My name is Shane (aka "Dez"), and i'm brand new to this community. (from Bothell, wa)
I'm excited to have found permies and pretty much everything that Wheaton Labs is doing!! (permaculture/hugel, beyond organic, experimenting, rmh's, just all of it..all the time~.. lol. seriously.)
There's more to the story, perhaps for another time, i'm happy to share.. anyway..

MY SITUATION:
Interested in the Bootcamp program.. I've started my 200 podcast journey as well as the youtube content. (its like sweet nectar of life, to me.. all the time~..)
I must be bonkers, cuz I plan to be ready to move out there late Aug 2020 (assuming plans go accordingly).
Permies.com suggests the curriculum may begin in July 2020, before i'm available to be there.

QUESTION:
Do i have to wait another 11 mos (until July 2021)? or is there an option for "delayed start" sort of thing?
I'd very much prefer to join you guys asap, if there's any way.
Any suggestions?? =D

Thanks! Sincerely,
Shane "Dez"

Hello Shane! Welcome to permies! I'm glad to hear you're excited to join the Permaculture Bootcamp at Wheaton Labs!

I recommend reading the thread about the Permaculture Bootcamp at Wheaton Labs for more information. I think the FAQ might answer a lot of your questions. If your questions are not sufficiently answered there, I advise asking them in that same thread.

Hi Shane!

The Podcast requirement is not for Bootcamp! (I believe that's just for joining Ant Village) You can pitch in the $100 and join whenever works best for you! We currently have 2 openings in the Bootcamp!

Dave is totally right in the Permaculture Bootcamp at Wheaton Labs being a great place to ask questions--Paul answers questions directly there. In fact, after I make this post, I'll merge your thread into the Bootcamp thread.

Another great resource is the official Bootcamp website. That has a handy-dandy button to pay, and then Paul will get you all the details so you can come out whenever works best for you.

Hi,
Shane again.. Thanks for your thorough and friendly response Nicole!
I'm not sure what's the best way to ask a question that's not answered in the forum (or i couldnt find)? (would happily receive guidance if any)
For example, I excitedly submitted my "coin" to register for bootcamp. Yes! And then.. What happens next?
I think i read in one of the forums that I'd be receiving something to help permies get to know me. Did i miss a step perhaps? =D
Thanks~!

Hi there- I’m hoping to join the boot camp for a few weeks in October. My husband will be with me (we are traveling in our camper van) but he works virtually so he won’t be able to commit to the 40 hours a week. He has weekends free of course and maybe an hour or so he could work each week day. I can work 40 hours a week without a problem. Was wondering if we could still stay? Our van has solar and a little fridge and everything so we can bring a lot of our own food

I think that if we had a rental coordinator here, things would be different.  But we're pretty much a scramble right now.

So I would say "yes".  You two eat most meals yourselves and can join us for meals about ...   40% of the time?  And since the bootcamp is currently just M-F, maybe your husband would like to help boots on their plots on the weekend?

Something like that?

Someone asked me this question about Bootcamp, and don't know the answer. So, I'm posting it here:

I prefer not to add salt or sugar to my food. Can this be accommodated? What are the shower/bathroom conditions? What are the options if I prefer to stay by myself (social distancing, etc.....)?

Boots cook their own meals.  You will have oats, flour, fruits, veggies, etc.  If you choose to cook without salt or sugar, that is up to you.

Shared showers.

There is a shower in the "normal" bathroom, and three showers in "the shower shack" - heated by a rocket water heater.

The photos I've seen of bootcamp would suggest that this would be a challenge.

I think most people that come here want the experience.

A few people that come here are looking for the work trade to a future event.

A few seek and ant village plot or a deep roots plot.

Currently, the trade is:

  - four months in the bootcamp for more than a year in ant village.

  - two years in the bootcamp for "deep roots" (kinda like lifetime rent)

Depending on a lot of things, those offers will probably be later changed to six months and 3 years.  Or rescinded all-together.

So this post is to make it clear that these are the offers on the table for people joining the bootcamp right now.

Jaqi is still around!

And, I gotta admit, I laughed at "Jennifer and mulch." All the other captions were "this person and this person." And there's Jen just having a splendid time with mulch!

Though, really, I think it also makes a good point about being an introvert in a community. Sometimes you just wanna hang out with the mulch and kitties, and that's okay!

Carter,

At this moment we are full.  I suspect that we will have two openings around mid september.

Here is the info on the bootcamp waiting list:

Hi Paul and/or Nicole

I've been posting to your fine site for a few years and because it turns that I can have a little time in Missoula I thought to visit. I am done with other needs tomorrow and would be interested in seeing the WL a few days - departing by 9/3 or if things are too wonderful 9/8 or 9.

This is purely "smell the flowers" ie. I cannot offer work and would like to veg out and kibbitz.

I need a place to park a small RV where I sleep and make coffee and try to become human every morning. But if possible I would like to share lunch and dinner with the crew. I would be happy to chop carrots or otherwise make cooks life easier for an hour or so daily if that helps.

Somewhere here there was a post about RV parking and visiting non-combattants but I'm not finding it, hence this post. I can check email every couple hours, and can do texts, during the day. After 7-8pm I dont have phone service, so I'll check 8am or so next day.

Hope to see ground zero but this is last minute for sure snd I understand perfectly if it's not a go, what with the big weekend coming on or other business.

Cheers Rufus

Rufas, it sounds like you might be interested in the SEPPer program https://permies.com/wiki/sepper.

Sounds like you'd be "camping/tenting." 1-7 nights is $150 (<--that link goes straight to paying Paul via paypal, and then he gets you more info). For 8-14 nights, it's $175.

As a SEPPer, you can work as much or as little as you want. If you join in for half a day, you get one meal free with the Boots--if you join in for the whole day, you get 3 meals with them. BUT, I'm pretty sure if you brought your own food to cook/contribute to the group meals, you could probably cook with them and eat the shared food, without having to put in the work in Bootcamp.

I'm pretty sure there's no wait-list for SEPPer program.
