I'll admit, this was an opportunity to gain a grain of confidence with the plasma cutter, a tool I had little to no previous experience using.

Free handed didn't get the kind of clean line I'd call acceptable for this job but it was fun cutting 1/8th steel like butter.

A simple guide and a little more practice got the results I wanted to see.

Time to switch over to the mig and weld up the angle iron bits.

Black locust is, according to the janka scale, significantly harder than white oak.

I added a couple small bits of stove gasket rope between the wooden handle and the metal plate as a thermal barrier. This will be a much tighter fit than bricks to block unwanted heat loss.

I can't see the lower roller bearing but the upper one is not set to keep the blade from pushing back to have the teeth enter between the guide blocks.  It works best for me if the guide blocks line the back of the blade up with the edge of the roller bearing and the roller bearing only contacts the back of the blade with hard pressure.  The position of the blade forward and back is adjusted by the tilt of the upper wheel; look for a wing nut on the back of the housing with a locking nut to center the blade on the drive tire.

I'm probably wrong, but I suspect you want the blade centered on the wheels, then adjust the ball bearing to just miss the back of the blade.  So when you start pushing the wood into the blade it pushes back slightly and contacts the SIDE of the ball bearing.  Then the two black guide blocks are adjusted to almost touch each side of the blade BEHIND the teeth.  I've heard of people wrapping the blade with a dollar bill and sliding the blocks tight against the bill.  Once the bill is removed, the gap is about correct.

Blade centered on the drive and driven pulley - check.  It appears I overlooked the guide adjustments (moving them closer or further from the blade sides) and asymmetrical roller as well but the biggest factor is where the blade makes contact with the roller bearing - side or face.  The roller aspect isn't particularly intuitive.

Appreciate the fundamental pointers and chiming In.   Brings me back to figuring out which strings on a guitar to tune first and setting the nozzle height on a build plate for 3d printer.
