I bought a $12 hatchet from Harbour Freight. It was dull!

I used a file to put an edge on it.

I sharpened a hatchet!
Most of the work was done with the file shown in the photo, but I also used a whetstone after I filed the nicks out. I found Sask Hunting's video linked in the original post for this BB helpful.

I have newfound respect for anyone that has done a sharpening video on youtube... Getting a clear focused shot of an edge is HARD!

Anyway, I managed to get one or two of the before enough to see the difference I think.

Sharpened with a rough/fine double sided whetstone for doing sickles and hatchets and such while in the field.

Note: Agreed. The pix are tough on the sharpening BBs. This hatchet is clearly sharper than it was. Good job.

Cool story behind this hatchet actually, a man from around my town was moving away and knew that I was pretty keen on camping and the like and since he wasn't going to be doing any of that sort of thing anymore he decided to give me a whole bunch of equipment, I couldn't pass it up and that included this hatchet!

Great scrounge. But: eye protection! I wave my naughty finger in your direction.

Edit: Staffers flagged the safety thing too, as I was typing. Good. Only one set of eyes people. Amazon does not deliver.

Aw darn! I usually have my glasses on most days but they only just broke recently. It's a completely fair criticism though

Brandon, use the hatchet for some more BBs (I see you're working up a storm of them!) and you'll have the hatchet needing sharpening again before too long. At least enough to show the badge bit.

It could be an opportunity to try sharpening with another method, like a whetstone or a file next time too. I always try to reframe my mistakes as learning opportunities. And.. how should I say this... I have had many many learning opportunities.

Thanks Mr. Johnson! I'll definitely keep it in mind, was going to go for the files next time since I'll probably be investing in a new set of them soon. I'll learn from this just like you say!

I learned this lesson early - my Dad always wore glasses with a "safety designation", but they looked like regular prescription glasses, as safety's were required where he worked. One day he was mowing the lawn, hit a rock, which bounced off a tree and hit him on the edge of the glasses and cut his forehead right above them. I got pawned off on the neighbors while mom drove him to Emerg for 3 stitches. In those days, I didn't see a single adult wearing eye protection when mowing. I still don't see near as many as I think I should. As Douglas says - only one set, needs to last a lifetime, don't take chances people!

Sharpening and cleaning up the bevel on my hatchet. Tried for more of a rounded bevel to support the edge and hopefully help it stay sharper.

 - closeup pic of the dull edge

 - action pic of sharpening

 - another closeup of sharp edge

cleaned up the rust and sanded, took some more closeups
