Hello PEP-folks,
The old Estwing hatchet was dull, like me.
So I ground the edge, resulting in a much sharper tool. Unlike me.
Because I was lazy, and doing it at a lunch break, I feathered it with a cutoff wheel which was already on the grinder, rather than swapping it out for a proper metal grinding wheel (which would be much thicker, and could tolerate pressure). However, I have cutoff wheels by the box, I can never find the big wheels in the welding jobox, and though you have to be a little lighter in your touch, the light wheels work fine.
To try it out, I split a busted scrap piece of butcher block from a kitchen project. Splits nicely. (Here in AZ, we don't have "trees", "rounds", "firewood", or "kindling", such as I remember from my youth in the northwest. So it goes.)

 - the edge is free of nicks and looks sharp when done

To get certified for this BB, post three pics:

 - closeup pic of the dull edge
 - action pic of sharpening
 - another closeup of sharp edge  

I sharpened and filed this hatchet manually with a file and sandpaper.  Then, I oiled it.  I have an angle grinder but need to either clean out my workspace in the garage or blow off all leaves from driveway (and hookup hose) due to the flying sparks.  The angle grinder isn't my favorite tool anyway so I'm not too sad...lol.  I purchased the contents of this house when I moved in, and it came with a bench grinder.  That grinder is behind stacks of stuff, and I am not sure it even works so I'll use that later...maybe.

That's ok.  It really needs a good sharpening with the angle grinder.  I setup everything in the garage and just waiting for the battery to charge.  I'll resubmit after I've used the grinder.  On the plus side, this is now setup to clean and sharpen my shovel for another BB.

I cleaned up this hatchet in the clean a rusty tool BB but she still needs an edge.

I used the sandpaper on a drill to put the bevel on and remove the huge chip in the top of the edge.

I played around with a couple methods including sandpaper, my honing stone and a leather strop. Honing stone is still my favorite.

At Basecamp here at WL and saw some hatchets were in need of some attention so I spent some time getting them safely sharp. No one wants a hatchet that bounces!

Edge case submission
I decided to restore an old hatchet I found in an ancient woodpile. I first used a wire brush to cast off the majority of the rust. Then I used this whetstone, coarse and smooth sides. I followed that with sandpaper of 3 grades, and finished the polish with mineral oil.
My husband recognized this hatchet half way through the project, and was happy to see his dad's old tool restored! The wooden handle is uploading...
