I'd intended to harvest these roots towards the end of the summer, but a bad windstorm knocked my burdock plants down so I figured I might as well dig them now. I definitely should have cut the roots up before drying them - they were a pain to cut once they dried. I ended up with about a cup of dried burdock root.

Found some burdock in the woods while picking serviceberries after I had been trying to figure out what plants I could find for the syrup BB. I had to run back to the cars to borrow a shovel and then I didn't have time to get a lot because my friends were waiting for me to return their shovel but I got three plants and a piece of another that I broke off trying to dig out.

Here is one of the plants.

I tried digging it out with a stick and broke the root.

I borrowed a shovel. It worked much better than a stick.

Look at that nice root!

I got several smaller ones as well.

Here they all are ready to be washed in the sink.

Scrubbing as much of the dirt off as I could manage.

Cutting up the roots. This actually smelled delicious. Like dirt but delicious.

I put the pieces on a pan to dehydrate in the toaster oven.

Running the dehydrate cycle.

After drying the pieces.

The dried pieces in a labelled jar. It wasn't a lot but should be enough for at least a couple servings of decoction.

Note: Good job!
