This is a Badge Bit (BB) that is part of the PEP Curriculum. Completing this BB is part of getting the sand badge in Natural Medicine.

For this BB you will create a tincture out of yarrow.

I harvested yarrow in my garden back in June, made a tincture, and finally got around to straining it this week. I used a combo of Gem Clear 190 proof and 80 proof vodka.

BBV price: 1
Note: the label indicates you added water. this would dilute the alcohol and make the tincture unsafe, especially for long term storage of tincture.

Thanks for your time volunteering to review submissions!

I would like to respectfully make a case for the recipe I used. I wasn't going rogue or cutting corners. I followed a recipe from Herbal Roots Zine by Kristine Brown, Registered Herbalist with the American Herbalists Guild. She studied with Rosemary Gladstar and has done a lot of research in herbalism (she's not some random lady with a blog). Her recipe calls for topping off with water when using dried yarrow, which I did. I used distilled water to prevent contamination.

Note: I certify this BB complete

Staff note (Paul Fookes) :

Hi Amy,
I originally agreed with the original certifier about your BB because the pictures are not labeled. If you had included the recipe in the original BB and labled the pictures, this would have helped the original certifier.  I missed that you had dried the yarrow hence it was flagged as an edge case by me, because as pointed out, water dilutes the effect of the alcohol.  You could have used fresh yarrow without drying and simply added alcohol to simplify the process.
Best wishes for future BBs

Yarrow being harvested:

I dried my yarrow first:

The recipe I used called for a 1:5 ratio of dried yarrow to alcohol. The alcohol needed to be 80 proof so I used whisky.

I measured the ingredients out on a scale. I ended up with 26g of yarrow and 130g of whisky. I put it in a little spice bottle and let it sit in the pantry for two months. I was only going to do six weeks but I got busy.

After two months I strained the whole thing. I started with a strainer but eventually I put it all in a cheesecloth and squeezed all the liquid I could out of it.
