OK, Wheaton, I had to sign back up with this monthly thingy just so I could post this and to be honest it has left a rather bad taste behind or maybe the new meds I'm on for now, well, doesn't matter!
I would like to hear from you or Andres what size bag of coins it will take to get this project started!!  I think enough people want this and it will turn out great, so if I can push this project forward with a swift kick in the patooty I'll be glad to do so!!

I"m still willing to support you and I believe in your visions (mostly) and I have a strong feeling that your eyes are brown.  But that can be a tale for another time.

Peace

I would donate money to this project to help get you all to the next step.

Maybe the best I can do right now is buy another round of the original cards!

Which are really great.

Andres and I have been working on the cards for years now.  I really like the topics and the results of each card.

Trying to answer your question ....     your question smells a bit like "how long is a piece of string?" to me ...

I like the idea of doing a kickstarter and the kickstarter does great!  And ....   the last kickstarter did not do great despite having 200 thumbs up before we started ...

We could just print 10,000 decks of cards and sell them - without kickstarter.   That will cost about $15,000 to $20,000.

We could start off a bit more humbly and get 1000 decks of cards - but the cost per deck will triple.

This is where kickstarter is nice.  We can plan everything for 10,000 decks and if we get that much, then we move forward.  And if we don't get that much, then we scrap the whole project.

Along the lines of all this, I met with andres yesterday and we looked at four cards.  Two of them are "done" and the other two we came with ideas for improvement.

To try to address your question:   the giant block is the printing.

Okie Dokie, at least I now know how long a piece of string is, it's 15k to 20k long.

I've spent some time via phone with my executor this afternoon, we have worked out the wording for his instructions in regard to your hopefully soon to happen crowdfunding.

I may or may not be around to watch this event unfold, when you guys finish the design and feel ready to launch my pledge is just a phone call or email away.

You have my real email addy , if needed just get in touch with me.

Hi Deane,

Sounds like you’re in! Thank you so much for your anticipated support. We are working double time to make it happen as soon as possible so you can enjoy them very soon. I genuinely believe this item will help spread permaculture far and wide!

Both the font of the original cards and the cards themselves were way too small.  Better to use the additional resources to make them an enjoyable size.

Just a thought - I'd like to see a deck completely dedicated to seeds, what they look like, all the same size though. A carrot seed and a pumpkin seed need to be a size that people can see and identify. Maybe somewhere on the card show what they look like when they start before they get their second leaves so people don't pull them out of the ground as weeds. (Let's not say how many times that has happened).
No idea if that would be a go or not.

I'd buy some of the colored ones that you will get made.

I have made note that people often dislike me speaking of the visions that I have and that's OK, I'm very used to that.  I mostly keep the visions to myself as the lessons are mostly for me !  But last night I had a super strong one of a near endless stream of Purple Playing Cards being shipped out of Missoula.
So I know this is going to happen, dust off those CC's, get ready, I don't have a timeline, just sooner rather than later.

Write that down.

Peace

This may be a few years too late, but here are some ideas I had. My phone isn’t great so I couldn’t see the cards as they are in their current stage. But here is my two cents.

Perhaps the queens or jacks could be food preservation focused. Canning, freezing, fermenting, dehydrating (see awesome outdoor dehydrator plans) or other (root cellaring root crops or overwintering in the ground, smoking meats) etc.

Another card could highlight permits friendly home building materials…cob, straw bales, cordwood, underground.

Places to grow food.  Greenhouse, friend’s house, inside your house (ie sprouts, southern window, basement with grow lights, aero garden), outside your house (garden, container gardening on your patio, aquaponics).

Maybe resources to broaden permaculture for all.  Highlighting, of course, Permies.com. This could be card 1

William Wallace wrote:My opinion of a permaculture deck would be one that explains permaculture principles through pictures.

Like the kings can be Kultures, like one hugelkultur.  Perhaps it doesn't say hugelkultur, but depicts it in jmage but a pointing to with a written description of rotting wood.  The idea would be they could also be like flashcards used to teach people about an idea. Hydrokulture, growing in water, and polykulture could be two others.

Perhaps something along these lines could be called Permaculture tactics playing cards, to differentiate any prior product or idea.

The 2s could be four different bird types, perhaps pictures of feeding methods or plants they like could be with them in picture.  The 4s can be garden animals, 6 insects, 8 spiders, but what about all the other numbers.  The Queen, Jack, 10, 9, 7, 5, 3, 1 are all unaccounted for in regards to actual permaculture teachings, tactics, or thoughts.

I got the full affinity publishing suite on half off recently, so I could put in an effort into some professional cards.  I haven't printed any yet, but having the base models that I posted pictures of prior, I can modify them and add almost anything.

The issue is time.  The more detailed the image, the longer the print.  If someone has access to a sublimation printer, having them do the images, and you 3d print onto those sublimation prints, or something to that effect.

Loving how and where thisis going.  Bought a lot of the last set and had a bus load of Permies come to town  Did not have enough sets on hand.  Plus I have friends who love all things purple.  Looking forward to the new set. There are some great ideas for new sets.  Over the years to come, we may get card version of a very big permies book.

Rolling dice ....

Our last two kickstarters did not do well.

I like to think that this kickstarter will do really well!    A big decision to make is about how many to print.  Print more and the price per deck goes way down.  Print less and the price per deck goes way up.  And once the kickstarter starts, you are not allowed to change the price.

And then there is a bit of figuring out the overall goal.  We usually set the goal to a price so that if we barely get funded, we will have to go into the red to fulfill.  I think this is the sincere kickstarter:  it isn't about making money as much as it is about getting your business off the ground.  A substitute for a bank loan.  So what is the bare minimum needed to move the business through the last step?  A lot easier to figure out if we know in advance how many of each thing would be sold.

And then there is the idea of "how many emails to send out."  It seems that each email results a boost forward while simultaneously resulting in somebody saying "too many emails."  I confess I would much rather put my time into new projects than send emails. But it does seem like most people don't contribute until email number 30.  We did our fewest emails on the last kickstarter and it was our poorest performing kickstarter.

Another angle:  if we are gonna do a kickstarter, we gotta start figuring out what goes in the kickstarter video.  That always feels like the core thing of getting started with any kickstarter.

And rewards!  I think we should try simpler rewards for this kickstarter.  2 decks and 12 decks.

Paul and I do the email thingy from time to time and I don't claim to be that close, butttt in his most recent email about the purple deck his optimism and enthusiasm is rising.  I'm just saying -"something boutta happen", and I will not be surprised if we see the big bear dancing soon!!

Write that down !

Every card deck has two one-eyed jacks and a suicide king, and these should as well.

Great Leaping Horned Horny Fire Farting Toads.

I ordered a two deck deal of the first cards on Friday 3 Oct.  In my mail, today 6 Oct I opened  my cards !!!  When I send stuff to Paul with first class mail it mostly takes five working days to get there.

Great Job.

Deane and I exchanged some emails and ...   so we are moving forward with a kickstarter ...  and we are gonna try to get this going soon ...  maybe in a couple of weeks.

When I met with andres yesterday to talk about this, the first thing to do for a kickstarter is to put together the kickstarter video.  So we hashed out a voiceover script:

i'm paul wheaton and this is my 16th kickstarter.

when you are bonkers about permaculture, you might seem a bit crazy to friends and family.

12 years ago we came out with a deck of permaculture playing cards.  The idea was to give decks to people, as gifts, so you seem less crazy. It worked so well, people asked for another deck!  We slowly put together a list of more than 100 card ideas, took the best, and we now present "the purple deck!"

The magic is that you give a deck of cards to somebody that thinks you are crazy.  They open the deck and look at two cards, giving each of the two cards seven seconds of their time.  We hope to hook them into permaculuture in two cards!

Is there enough interest in these cards to get them printed?

and there will be musical bits showing cards.

thoughts?
