This is a badge bit (BB) that is part of the PEA curriculum. Completing this BB is part of getting the sand badge in Metalworking.

In this Badge Bit you will make 6 pop can plant labels.  These are a way to make semi-permanent labels for your plants.

Minimum requirements:
  - Make 6 plant labels
  - Metal wire (or coat hanger) post
  - Aluminum pop can label embossed with ball point pen

Provide proof of the following as pictures or video (<2 mins):

One of my first posts in permies was recommendations for plant labels. When I logged on this morning, I saw the new metalwork PEA’s and this was top of the list. This task ticked so many boxes, I set too straight after my morning chores. Great to see metal working I can do - thank you so much for creating these.

1) I have soda cans and knew they were a potential resource, but hadn’t done anything about it
2) I had all the tools, no need to purchase anything
3) I would make something I needed as per my previous thread

These are the steps I took

1) Used kitchen poultry shears to cut up the cans - not ideal, but good enough.
2) Reverse rolled up the foil to remove some of the curl
3) Scored 6 1.5 x 2.5 inch rectangles with a biro
4) Cut the rectangles and then rounded the corners
5) Used a hole punch to cut holes
6) Wrote names with a dead ballpoint and then went over with a working ballpoint
7) Cut a coat-hanger into six equal lengths of 5.5 inches
8) Bent a right angle one inch from the end with pliers and then bent to 180 with my hands
9) Used pliers to bend back end to hang the labels
10) Secured the labels, squeezing shut the end loop

Here are my pictures:

My first PEA submission ! Not sure about my simple design for the label and the lenght of the metal support. Will try it like that, but maybe i will cut next ones longer. Or use wooden stick to screw the label on ? I was surprised how maleable the beer can was, it's fun to do !

I used old house electric cable for metal wire.

It took me a few tries to get my husband to stop chucking out the beer cans as soon as he had finished so I could attempt this badge bit.

I used kitchen shears to cut the can and make the labels. I used an old biro to emboss and then an okay one to highlight the writing. The hardest bit was cutting and shaping the coat hanger into the label holders. I used wire clippers which were only just up to the job and pliers from my husband's electronics kit (shh don't tell anyone).

I made tags for the trees I brought home from the native plant sale.

Haven't found the hole punch.

Not 100% sure if I just post mine here. Seems good, but let me know if there's a better place! This is my first submission for a PEA BB.

I used a beer can and the contents of it to start this project, and have been working on it off and on for like a month. I used an exacto knife to chop it up, pliers for bending and plying and a ball point pen to emboss like a boss... (Man, cutting aluminum with an razor blade gives me such a weird feeling. Nails on a chalkboard sort of vibe). It was really fun to do the lettering. They're not the most beautiful tags, BUT THEY'RE MINE!

Here's some hipster beer getting cut into sheets:

Bending the edges over to make an octagonal rectangle:

While embossing the tags, I found that it was easier to make a good impression if there is something softish under the tag. I put an envelope under mine.
I found some wire while I was picking up trash in a sort of gully beside the apartment, and it was long enough to make 7 hangers for the tags.

Finished Product:
