Here is my submission for the Earthworks - Sand - Fix a Pothole or Puddle BB.
I eliminated a rut in the road next to the shop/classroom at Base Camp during SkIP 2021.
To document the completion of the BB, I have provided the following:
- The pothole/puddle in the road that is to be eliminated
- The road without the pothole or puddle anymore
I added gravel to it, but didn't like the way it felt, even after tamping it down. So I added a bucket of mulch/wood chips on top of the gravel, and I tamped it down again. It feels much better now.
Adding gravel to a pot hole by itself never works because water around the gravel will allow it to splash out with the next rain and traffic The organic material you added will absorb the water and hold the gravel in place. Even better in many cases is to add clay soil which tends to make the pot hole water resistant while the gravel makes it weight resistant.
This was a pothole right by the auditorium at WL base camp. It's hard to see the contrast in the first picture so I included one after fill had started, along with the final product.
We filled a longish hole today that was soft and puddling. We used gravel and packed some heavy clay soil between the gravel.
Because it was so soft and puddly, to top it off, we also added a small drain into the field next to the dirt road.
