Apparently I'm a freaky mix of extra and introvert.

Aside from being annoyed that four capital letters describe my personality, it's pretty damned accurate.
ENTJs are supposedly rare and special, but I faked a more introverted personality for a test,
and my fake personality type was also wildly unusual
I have a feeling whatever personality I 'choose', it won't come out normal...

INTJ all the way, baby! I especially love the "Variant = Assertive, Role = Analyst" part. I happen to have worked as a lead analyst/project manager for forever. In kidspeak, this would be interpreted as "bossy know-it-all". Oh no - never been called THAT before. Strangely, that never hurt my feelings - ya gotta own it!

I think personalities change overtime, parenting with your first child is way different than parenting with subsequent children.

Myers Briggs depending on what, when and who your interacting with at a particular time might affect the rating.

ISTP. I don't know what that means, but apparently I'm "assertive" and an "explorer." I like the sound of that.

One of the examples of famous ISTPs was Jack Bauer from the TV series "24." "Bauer" is the German word for farmer, so I like that, too. Is Sepp Holzer the Jack Bauer of farming?

pretty interesting already, a quick tally of peoples types posted here.

only one of the SP group, none of the SJ group. those two groups comprise the majority of the general population, but we only have one.and only two extroverts.

NT and NF are well represented, 6 members of the NT group which is the most rare being approx 5 % of the population, and 4 people from the NF group, which is also rare with 15 % approx of the general population.

plus theres an interesting connection with the duality of the NT and NF groups, in my life i have noticed that as well. maybe NT and NF are a bit like peanut butter and jelly =) they go together but they are so different. i've noticed that i have a lot of NT friends, as well as NF friends, even though these are the rarest types my life is full of people who are generally INTP, other NT types, INFP and INFJ, with a few ENFP types.

I know some very extravert permaculture people-and they're out there doing extravert permaculture stuff.
I guess it makes total sense that an online communities like permies has an introvert majority.

INTJ. had a laugh a while back when i was taking a myers briggs test with my wife and sister in law.

The question was something aboht listening to others and giving sympathy, and i asked what that would even entail. Sister-in-law said something like "if you had a friend who had a family member that died- would you want to listen to them describe their feelings?" And i apparently cut her off by saying "ABSOLUTELY NOT" descriptions of INTJ fit me really well.

My wife is an ENFJ.

I got INTJ as well apparently. Not sure if it is me or not (I am a bias jury after all), but it makes me sound pretty awesome, so I am going to live with it.

everyone had their letters on their name tag
and seeing another person's letters
it was suppose to tell you how to deal them

as a personal insight tool -OK
as a means of dealing with others (he's a ____, so i will try to get him to agree with me by.....) - NO

I'm an ISFP ("Artist"). Beekeeping has been a good fit for me because it allows me a lot of freedom to be close to nature and do my own thing. My partner, who is an organic farmer, is an ENFP ("Inspirer").

NO indeed!
I'd vaguely heard of this letters business, but I come from a cooking background,
and if many of the cooks I've known used initials to describe their personalities,
they wouldn't stand for things like 'intuition' and 'thinking', that's for sure

Me too! We're the rarest type, supposedly. It makes sense, though, that there'd be so many of us in the permaculture movement: "No other personality type is better suited to create a movement to right a wrong, no matter how big or small" and, "INFJs tend to see helping others as their purpose in life... their real passion is to get to the heart of the issue so that people need not be rescued at all."

INFP and INFJ are big picture types, making the world a better place, working on a grand scale, thinking about the world at large and not just their tiny corner. even the introverts who love to find a way to both help the world while hiding out in their little corner of it!

the same pattern keeps on, another SP group person, and lots more from the NT group - mostly INTP and INTJ.... and NF group - mostly INFP and INFJ, and a lot of them even though these are all rare.
actually most of the responses here are from the rarest types.
all 8 of the NT and NF types only amount to almost 20 % of the population, some even say less than that.

i think its interesting, not surprising, thats probably what i would have guessed as far as types most into permaculture. i have geeked out on the MB for a while and find it pretty fascinating.

However I notice a lot of talk around here about introverts and extroverts and I don't really know if I can wrap my mind around that?

Like isn't it mostly situational? Like example: I'm a white dude in His Majesties navy around say 1801 and I get washed ashore on the Isle of Hispaniola. Even if I spoke french I think I would probably turn into an introvert quickly given the crowd.

Likewise I may be really comfortable around family or friends and still feel the need to retreat into a corner and hide at certain social gatherings. It just all kinda seems situationally relative to me.

Extrovert and Introvert don't mean you are always one way or the other around people. They tend to indicate more about how those situations affect you than if you are willing to do them or not. Extroverts are rejuvinated by by groups and social things. They tend to be very eager to seek out group situations because those are what they most enjoy. Introverts tend to feel worn down by large active group events and can often only do them for so long before they feel drained. Neither is without the urge to be near other humans, it is just that the introvert tends to favor small groups unless there is something pulling them towards a larger one. As an example, I am an introvert, but have still gone to clubs, parties and social events. I just tend to want to leave sooner than some of my friends and often feel like I have run a marathon after having been at a long event. When I hiked the Appalachian trail, I found myself actively going to where others were just because it was a novelty to have more than one or two people to talk to at a time, but I would still only want to do things with large groups for short periods of time.

These tests are always fun! I am Personality: ENTJ, Type: Assertive, and Role: Analyst. Surprisingly, I find that pretty accurate as well as its analysis of ENTJs. The percents also seemed rather accurate. I am an extravert leaning ambivert but will be introverted when times or work demand it, as to achieve my goals.
