please help me create BB wiki pages, and other PEP pages

First, please click on the thumbs up for this post if you understand the value of creating the PEP stuff. (just hoping to see a really big number of thumbs - sorta tells me that i don't have to re-explain it)

We have the first PEP1 gathering coming up in a few months, and I would like some help in fleshing out the BB items.  

Some people might say "hey, it's your thing, you do the work!"   Just a reminder:   I am making this public and free.  We are creating all of this so that people can certify remotely at no cost.   On top of that, I have already paid for development of the permies.com software to support showing badges for people.  And for other things.   All to make something for free.   Oh, and the event in may is free too.  So this is a big thing for the community.   I hope that others will see the value of what is being created and throw their shoulder in to see it exist.

Please help.  This is a lot of work.  

Stuff we could use help on:


P007:   go to the club mallet BB
 and do the steps to get certified for club mallet.   This will help to set the precedent for how it is done.  Feel free to ask questions and post comments there.   Let's bring that BB to life!

P008:  go to the round wood woodworking badge page and see what BBs in the sand badge don't have a wiki page yet and create one.  Reply to this thread to get dibs on which one you are creating.

P009:  Create BB wiki pages for sand badges for earthworks, gardening, woodland care, and dimensional lumber

P010:  still working on defining some of the badges.   Maybe folks can make a rough badge wiki with a bunch of ideas and i can come through and tidy it up later.  or maybe add to or create a brainstoring thread for a badge?

P011:  go over the current threads in this forum and add comments.  Either add some ideas or maybe some validation.   Add some discussion to get all this off the ground.


Please help!   This is a lot of work!  Plus, when this gets more popular, won't it be cool to see your name attached to a bunch of the original stuff to make it all exist?

Please help to change the world with some gritty substance rather than just words.  Pretty please with sugar on top?

I got your plotskateers email and would love to help, but I feel rather unqualified. Maybe I could help on the "student" end with testing instead, since this is all stuff I need to learn.

You could start by trying to make a mallet as described in that BB.  

You could also fish for brainstorming on certain badges - that helps us flesh out the badges faster.

I am a little lost, this concept has me a bit intrigued but I need a link to a beginning point that explains PEP and BB acronyms.

Western Montana gardener and botanist in zone 6a according to 2012 zone update.
Gardening on lakebed sediments with 7 inch silty clay loam topsoil, 7 inch clay accumulation layer underneath, have added sand in places.

I'll start working on the BB wiki pages for Gardening.  

I'm assuming the pages should:
  • Give some direction about the task required (but not spell out every little thing)
  • List minimum requirements to satisfy the BB
  • List documentation/photos needed for approval

    • And the title of the wiki pages should follow the format you used for the roundwood club:  PEP BB roundwood.sand.club   or in my case, PEP BB gardening.sand.hugelkulture

    So after spending a fair amount of yesterday reading through various PEP/PEX threads, examining the different badge requirements, etc., I have some thoughts.  

    While I understand that PEP is currently "Permie Experience ala Paul," I think Permie Experience Program might be a better name.  I feel the program has enormous potential for adaptation.  For example, if PDC were offered in what is currently known as a "blended course," where it combines online didactic portions with experience-based practical learning, the badge system (despite my personal dislike for the term "badge") could be utilized as the field work portion of the course.  For example, a Vimeo or YouTube video about permaculture growing techniques lasts 30 minutes, followed by specific methods in seperate videos.  The participant can then undertake their basic level experience, and submit evidence of success to their work at their own place.  

    By the same token, backing up a level on requirements a step would allow for more standardization across the board.  Raising Dry Beans, gives the practitioner a lot more opportunity to personalize the process.  For example, I can grow enough black beans to feed a person (my wife) for a year with one seed, because my wife won't have anything to do with them, but she will eat kidney, pinto, and other dry beans happily.  

    While my example above is specifically about the Gardening Badge, I believe most of the other badges/qualification programs could benefit from a similar despecialization.  If your business model calls for making and selling mozzarella di bifalo, then you need to build your dairy infrastructure based on the frame of a water buffalo, not a goat.  If your meat production is rabbits, you don't need to worry about whether your paddocks are pig proof or goat high.


    Whatever it takes to dodge a time clock.

    Wow!  We are moving forward!

    We have six BBs created so far!

    The process has been extremely helpful.   Somebody creates a BB and puts stuff in it, and images and videos and links and _______.   And then I can come and massage it a small bit and PRESTO!  It's done!   The amount of time it takes me to massage it a bit is about 80% less than creating it from scratch.   So thanks for your help!   I tried to give the helpers lots of apples and PIE to express my gratitude.  

    Please make more!   I'm off to work on tool care and natural building badges.

    Hi Steve, I just may have stepped on your toes.  I didn't see the bow saw ones you did before I jumped into doing one BB for all four combinations of trees and saws.  I just edited mine to be for only the chain saw trees.  

    So we now have your live bow saw, your dead bow saw and my chainsaw that covers live and dead.

    If you have BBs almost done for the chainsaw ones I can make my one go away since yours are better.

    Thanks to everyone who has helped so much already! The Badge Bits (BBs) are really starting to be filled out!

    I thought I would make a list so that we can keep track of which badges still need one or more pages for BBs at the sand badge level. The aspects with links are all the ones that have been posted so far. The aspects with a line through them have all of the BB pages for their sand badge done.

    If all of the BB pages for the sand badge of one of the aspects is filled, post in this thread and I'll update this list.

    Got the firewood BB done under woodland care, will start working on the prep 10 junkpoles, repair junkpole fence, and cleave 6 shakes with a fro, which should finish up the sand badge for woodland care.

    When you create a new thread, you will see a "tab" just below where you type your wordy-bits that says "wiki".  Select "wiki with comments".  If you forget the wiki step, I can mend it later.
