[quote I found a weird green flat fungus. I'd like to ID it just to know what it is.] Appears to be lichen which is a combination of fungus and algae living symbiotically together.

Had a long day of doing nothing. At least nothing worthy of close ups and explanation.

I did go get supplies to have a bbq tomorrow, I'm looking forward to trying out the acorn grill.

At the end of the day, just now, I did race around the lab on foot looking at plots before it got too dark.

If I had any one acre here and I had no choice but to make do, I wouldn't blink. I'd count my lucky stars and throw myself into the work. But I have so many options here I'm spoiled and second guessing myself.

I went looking uphill to the southeast of the plot I was looking at before and found a glade open to the east and sheltered on all sides by forest. I'm going to take a sun tracker app on my phone over there tomorrow and take a second look.

I also went and found a wild apple tree Josiah told me about. The light was fading, but you can see some blossoms still on it.

I'll check in tomorrow, hopefully with a decision.

Today was all about exploring the lab looking for a plot. I spent the morning hiking, going to each spot and finding the winter sun azimuth. On the shortest day of the year the sun rises less than 20 degrees above the horizon.  Both plots I was looking at barely see the sun, the southern hillside is in the way.

I hiked up that hill and from the view I could see open glades on the other side of the valley. Those should get the most sunlight because they are higher in the landscape.

I was near the path to go to the creek so I went and splashed around a bit. The creek is ice cold and I found more berries to watch.

I took a picture of a big cedar tree that was burned from one side. All that is left is a rind of wood and bark where the fire was put out.

I went down to basecamp to meet with Orin. He is giving a few of us a linux crash course. Learned how to change directories, view and edit files in the terminal, find a list of commands, and change the terminal behavior. I'm going to have to practice so I don't forget the lesson.

Had a big meal up at Cooper Cabin, we fired up the grill and cooked about seven pounds of meat. With Jen, Josiah, Nine, Chris, and myself we had about a pound each and it's all gone. I was going to grill peaches but all of us were too full, maybe later in the week.

I'm ending my Sunday up on the sunny side of the hills. I found a flattish spot by the highest, most western boundary. The sun exposure is great, the down side is access and water. This has the opposite attributes. But it would give me the opportunity to hydrate one of the highest points on the property.....

That is an exciting idea.

Just out of sight, the hillside slopes down to a road. Going to have to build a road to get up here.

I'm looking forward to searching the lab for a site as well Kyle, I'll have to pick your brain about it. I have a couple solar panels and have the hope of keeping a small fridge and some lights running, so winter sun exposure is a big one for my goals, I want to avoid ever using a generator to charge batteries if possible. The tall pines sure make that a challenge, I was hoping to plant a variety of smaller fruit and nut trees to the south of the wofati, and have the solar panels at the top of the roof for some additional elevation, and avoid any mature pines by using them in the construction. Water is a balance too, you want to be high enough up to avoid spring melt but not so high and dry that irrigation is a challenge.

BRK Post 79

The garden is starting to speed up. I'm seeing kale, beans, peas, carrots, and beets coming up. The kale needed thinning, instead of just plucking little sprouts out I replanted them further away. They might not live but even if some do I'll have more growing than I would otherwise.

I was taking a look at the current bush and found a spider hanging out on a cluster of fruit. I like finding beneficial insects on the garden plants.

While I was going over the whole plot cutting out grass I found beans pushing up through the mulch. They must have been growing under the mulch for awhile to get so big. The peas are putting on height too, some of the bigger ones need support.

Up at the greenhouse I got the one side wall panelled and made a start on the other.

Because I put a bevel on the ends of the boards there are exposed gaps on the end. So I made some trim to cap that side.

Doing this finish work is taking a long time. I'm trying to make my cuts be very precise. I should get all of this trim work done tomorrow.

As a bonus, on my walk from work I crossed paths with a pretty impressive spider. She held still while I got a picture.
