This is a badge bit (BB) that is part of the PEP curriculum.  Completing this BB is part of getting the sand badge in Natural Medicine.

For this BB, you will create an infusion of blackberry leaves. Infusion is a method of extracting desired compounds from plant material by steeping the material in hot or cold water, depending on the plant and its attributes.

To show you’ve completed this Badge Bit, you must post:
- a picture of your plants being harvested
- a picture of the infusion being made
- a picture of the finished infusion

I made blackberry infusion using foraged Trailing Blackberry (Rubis ursinus) leaves. According to Plants of the Pacific Northwest Coast by Pojar and MacKinnon, the leaves, stems, roots, and berries were used by the Coast Salish people and is the only native blackberry in this region.

The infusion has a faint blackberry smell and a fairly pleasant flavor.

Are all varieties of blackberries safe for infusion?
I currently have thornless blackberries growing in my yard and am wondering if I can infuse their leaves too.

I did a quick Google-Fu on blackberry leaf teas, and came up with mostly it's just a dietary supplement. Is it supposed to have any direct medicinal value? (such as a cold remdy, or other specific ailment treatment)

Joshua,
Blackberry infusion is indeed medicinal. If you make a strong infusion esp. with some sage added, it gives relief of diarrhea. Hope that helps.

I made a hot medicinal infusion of the blackberry leaves I harvested this Spring. I pouring boiling water over a couple of spoonfuls of dried leaves and let steep for 10 minutes, then strained and drank. I was delighted to find that the flavor was extremely appealing now that the herb was medically indicated, and didn’t even want honey with it.
