Anyone choosing daily art as their 2024 goal?

Want to team up and cheer each other on?

I love to macrame, crochet and am learning to knit.  I'm knitting socks slowly.  I resolve to macrame more, enjoy more crochet and work on the socks.

Maybe not daily, but I plan to do 100 small tapestry weaving pieces, something I have already started in December of 2023. I don't believe in making New Year's resolutions, so I'm continuing something I already started.

I'm supposed to record my third album, and restart my unfinished novel (this time as a novella or even short story). It would be great if I made headway on either of those things but I'll be happy just to be able to practice music regularly and jot down a few words as they come to me...I think (actually kinda hope) 2024 is going to be heavier on work and skill-building. 2023 was very creative. But I'm here for it!

I bought one of those huge sets of jelly gouache paint.  It's just over a kilo of paint for the same price as a 15ml tube.  It's designed for learning and can go a bit funky if we don't paint with it often.

My goal: paint at least one sketchbook page a day until the paint is finished.  I can top up black and white, but other than that, I'm sticking with the colours I have.  I've been testing it for the last week or so and it looks like I have ample time for painting both gouache and watercolours each day.

With any luck, my painting skills will improve and some of that will transfer to my watercolour paintings.

As today is the last day of the Year of the Rabbit:

Now, to hunt for a dragon that I can paint.

I don't macrame or crochet and think i can still knit and purl squares, so does darning socks count? I'm good at that! 😆

I made a point of bringing up extra good quality art pads and charcoal to Iqaluit. That, my permie books, and produce from my gardens.

Good quality paper is something hard to buy over the net.

My new project is to freely give supplies and lessons to budding artists, and so I am getting around to using my God given artistic talents by sharing them with others -- both children, and inuit artists with a passion. Enthusiasm is always an incentive for me.

My penny whistles are already out on loan, with my intention of replacing them if they are getting used -- follow up lessons in January - and the open holed flute came up with me as well.

It's not quite 'art' per se, but I've set out to carve at least one spoon per week in 2024. I just picked up spoon carving and figure I need practice to get good. I enjoy it a lot.

Okay, okay...although I hate to commit to anything, because I've always got too much going on to begin with...

BUT, this seems like a good thing, for both my spirit and my business, not to mention to further improving my skills, so I will pledge to work on art, whether it's for new products, or just to play, every day.

And I'm excited to see what others produce!!!

And spoon carving is applied art (my 2c)

Raven, your daily-ish brought me here!
I'm a regular reader of the daily-ish emails, but almost never post here on the forum... so here goes, testing the waters.

To begin with ART! No matter what your creative medium is, the key is to play.
Sure, there are "rules", or perhaps they are kind guidelines from the ones who walked the path before us, to show what works.
But what works for you? Perhaps you'll stumble upon something new altogether!

In a world full of factory produced dead stuff, anything created by the hand-and-heart connection of a human is special.
There was a time I'd barter my dried herbs for hand made utensils and other useful stuff via Instagram.
When the renovation is over, I'd like to pick up bartering again.

We're renovating two wee ancient houses in the heart of rural France - that is our creative (and constructive!) daily-ish practice since last summer, that will last for some years!
My partner has the building skills, I'm more of a gardener and love to pet our two kunekune pigs and tend to the flocks of chicken and quail. Our two dogs keep us company as well.
Now in the winter my creative energy mostly goes to the renovation. But I'm keen to co-create with nature as well, we got an old orchard with the houses and I'm familiar with the concept of a food forest... Hoping to create Discovery Paths into an edible, relaxing and beautiful landscape (only 3000m2 of it but still)!

Wishing all Permies a creative, fruitful and delighting 2024, full with happy encounters!

I have been fiddling around with weaving for the past couple of years and coincidently decided to really learn the craft this year. I'm starting with a commitment to myself to weave every day, so I'm right there with you. Let's do this!

Joanne, what kind of weaving, what kind of loom? I have rigid heddle and tapestry looms... Also a 4 harness rug loom that I have not put together yet

This year I decided to participate in a book arts community challenge (see "areyoubookenough" on instagram). There are prompts each month, for a year. It usually takes me much longer to make an artist's book, but I thought that maybe it's too long sometimes.
This month the prompt is "spice", and while I'm in Mexico, I keep eating all the SOO spicy foods... with different varieties of chilli pepper. Too spicy often!!
So, time to make some art about it.

I gave my kids some really fun art books for Christmas and one of my goals is to pause and sit down with them while they are creating art and to use the books myself too.

Also I signed the kids up for a weekly online calligraphy class that starts in a couple of weeks so I plan on sitting in on it with them and learning myself. The teacher encourages parents to learn along with the kids too. 👍 😃 👍

Minimum art goal accomplished and I have an hour before I start my day.  I'm going to do some relaxing watercolor.

I don't know if I'm going to share every painting here.  It's okay to make poor paintings,  especially when learning.   But maybe it's easier without the pressure of sharing.

So how is your second day of 2024 going?

Yes, I think cloud studies are the way to go for a while so I can get into the rhythm of doing my gouache paint and then work on watercolours while the sun rises.
That was a lovely treat today.

The first wash of the first chicken of 2024 in my 100 chicken project

It's nice that what I'm learning with gouache transfers over to watercolours.

So happy to see this art thread! Got sidetracked by a car accident in early Dec, and started coming back to my art life on New Year’s Day 2024. Here are my 12” high collage numerals to celebrate life this year, restarting my near-daily art journaling practice built over the last 5 years

I haven't made a resolution to do more art, as I use my spinning wheel most days anyway. I do need to warp my loom, though, and finish a rather large project I started two years ago!

Working on getting my art out into the world. Art EVERY day seems like one of those unattainable goals. Stuff happens, sometimes the muse departs for a week, etc. I will be content if I can make some new art a few times every week. I like to sketch, paint, play with clay and digitally manipulate regular photos and photos of handmade art. I'd love to cheer others on and share some of mine along the way 😊

Yesterday was a bit tricky for me.  I had to go to a place and only got my first layer of paint down before the day got busy.  I tried to finish it this morning, but I figure I need to watch some tutorials on water droplets to understand where I went wrong.

For today's painting, I went with something simple.  I got one of those tin posters about chickens for my birthday and I took the anatomy part and improved it (although I kept most of the spelling mistakes where they didn't interfere with the meaning because I'm a big fan of Engrish (and various Pidgins).

The hardest thing these last few days was figuring out what I want to paint.  I think I need to make a theme for a while so I don't waste time on choosing the subject.

I don't know what's going on, but it feels like every painting I paint with gouache is worse than those that came before.

So I took the day off and reminded myself I can paint.  I also wanted to test out this new watercolour paper sample (it's way smaller than I thought as I mistook the CM for inches - again)

Nice paper with a good result.

I used handmade watercolours from Beam Paints and a limited palette of Fall Popular Yellow, Mars Violet, Timberwolf grey, and Borial green.  I like the subdued look this limited palette gives and it matches my mood perfectly.

The rest of the paper I made into a block by glueing down three sides to make it easier to paint on the go.  I can fit a mini palette, the paper, and a water brush in my pocket for emergency painting.  So maybe the small size of this pad will work out for the best.

I'm considering changing my resolution to 100 paintings in gouache.   I should be either good at or fed up with gouache by then.

To be honest,  I think I'm getting worse with each painting.

Well, I must confess.  There is no way I could do art daily...I'm still trying to catch up with what I put aside before the holidays, so I could send holiday cards before the year was over!

And I started, after seeing the cute dragon, to try to do a dragon...which didn't go well.

Then decided I wanted to try to do one of those multicolored images, so I went looking and collecting images to study.  Ran out of time to produce anything, though.

TODAY I got inspired and tried my first "retro" or "vintage" image, since I saw another somewhat snarky meme or card or something.  So I made this and am pretty happy with the results.  Posted it on my store.

Let's see if I can manage to add an image here... okay, no.  Here's a link to the card I made, though.
