Would cutting a tree over 70 ft long count for the two 16 ft pieces work for this BB?
"And we urge you, brothers and sisters, warn those who are idle and disruptive, encourage the disheartened, help the weak, be patient with everyone. Make sure that nobody pays back wrong for wrong, but always strive to do what is good for each other and for everyone else."
1 Thessalonians 5:14-15
Hi Bethany,
This is part of the total woodland care. The trees need to be felled and limbed before they can be peeled (debarked) The aim of the activity is to have two peeled logs over 16 feet long. The telling word here is "over." So unfortunately, you need two trees. 😒
Here is my submission for this BB. I found peeling trees to be oddly enjoyable. Both of mine were conifers, and the wood inside the bark had such an interesting feel, plus it was a great challenge to see how few pieces I could get the bark off in. I've attached pictures showing:
- My 2 trees before they are peeled, showing they are at least 6" in diameter at the fat end and over 16 feet long
- My 2 trees after they are peeled and up off the ground
I peeled two trees for the root cellar being built at the 2023 PTJ. At this time of year (July) the bark comes off quite easily and I challenged myself to take the bark off in one piece. The trickier part was getting them off the ground.
Removed a couple live trees that had the audacity to grow where my hugelkultur went. I peeled em and put em up what for building stuff with em later. Behold!

Oh wow, I'm so late uploading these images. Here is my BB attempt from when I was at Wheaton Labs in April 2022
I enjoyed the peeling process and look forward to doing this again for roundwood construction

I love that Rocket Mass Heaters are Carbon-Nuetral. In Erica's and Ernies Art of Fire Presentation, Erica explains the chemistry of how that's possible!
I attended Helen's Garden Master Course in January 2022 and give the lectures 10/10 acorns! Fortunately for you, you can also see the Garden Master recordings but unfortunately you'll miss out on the fruit Helen grew and shared. It was the tastiest fruit I've ever had!
Here is my submission for peeling two trees. The first tree is a poplar and it was around 39 feet long so I cut it into two lengths. The other tree was some kind of spruce.
