Please join me in welcoming Michael Hoag & Laura Oldanie, authors of Growing Free

Read the book review here!

Michael and Laura will be hanging out in the forums until this Friday answering questions and sharing his experiences with you all.

At the end of the week, we'll make a drawing for 4 lucky winners to win a copy of his book! From now until Friday, all new posts in the financial strategy forum are eligible to win.

To win, you must use a name that follows our naming policy and you must have your email set up to receive the Daily-ish email. Higher quality posts are weighed more highly than posts that just say, "I want this book!"

When the four winners are selected, they will be announced in this thread and their email address will be sent to the publisher, and the publisher will sort out the delivery details with the winners.

Please remember that we favour perennial discussion.  The threads you start will last beyond the event.  You don't need to use their names to get their attention. We like these threads to be accessible to everyone, and some people may not post their experiences if the thread is directed to the author alone.

Posts in this thread won't count as an entry to win the book, but please say "Hi!" to Michael and Laura and make them feel welcome!

Thank you for the warm welcome here in the Permies forums. My co-authors Michael Hoag, Jenny Nazak, Eric Brown, & I are looking forward to engaging with you all here this week. We especially appreciate exploring this topic of designing fulfilling and financially viable lives for ourselves doing the work that addresses our major social and environmental challenges instead of perpetuating them with people who are familar with the rich permaculture tool kit.

If you're not familiar with our book Growing FREE (Financially Resilient & Economically Empowered) Building the Life of Your Dreams Without Losing Your Soul or Destroying the Planet you can read a bit more about it as well as me and my co-authors herewebpage.

And you can download a free excerpt of our book herewebpage

We're very excited to be engaging with you on this topic this week so bring on your questions, comments, thoughts and let the discussion begin....

Maybe a few discussion prompts would help to get the conversation flowing...

1) What challenges are you facing designing a financially viable permaculture life for yourself?

2)  What successes have you had designing a financially viable permaculture life for yourself?

3)  What have you learned through permaculture about finance, economics, and livelihoods especially as it applies to building true/regenerative wealth as individuals & in community?

Hi, Laura

I am looking forward to learning more about finances this week and I hope this turns out to be one of the best Book Promotions.

I can't wait to read all the questions and answers.

Thank you for taking the time and effort to bring your book to Permies!
As each of us looks for a financial Permaculture lifestyle, you have been able to show what that would mean.
I appreciate that you stopped by and will speak more about it.

Thanks again to all of you for these warm welcomes. While we're not here to inspire permaculture millionaires, my co-authors and I do want to prompt more conversations about money as a livelihood & lifestyle design tool within the permaculture realm given the realities of the context within which we all exist. It's encouraging to see so many people engaging in these discussions with us this week here in the Permies forums.

Rachel, I especially appreciate this comment

Welcome Michael and Laura! Fantastic book. I'm a fangirl now!

- we're thrilled to have you as a fangirl! And in your review with this one sentence you summarized what we co-authors always suspected about this book and is what compelled us to write it -

This truly is the missing volume in my Permaculture library that I have been desiring for quite a while.

Welcome! I read the sample chapters on your website and I am so excited about this book. My fiance and I have discussed the FIRE method before but it was too out of reach for us. I am also really skeptical about stocks and fluctuating markets. I can't wait to read more about regenerative investments and it seems this book will fill a major hole in financial strategies for the permaculture minded!

Congratulations to all the winners! We're super excited for you to get your copies and start designing your FREE (financially resilient & economically/ecologically/ethically) empowed) lives.

As Chris mentioned, FOR ANYONE WHO DIDN"T WIN there are other more affordable ways to access this book than what's available on Amazon.

1) the eBook version is on sale through 12/10 for $20. Get that here -webpage

2) to mark the occasion of the one year anniversary of the publication of Growing FREE last week we released a black & white edition which sells for $24.99. Grab that one here -webpage

3) There's also this free digital book excerptwebpage you can download to start with.

4) and if you would like to purchase the color version for yourself or as a gift (which is definitely worth it, because like so many other good permacutlure books it includes really helpful and aestehically pleasing graphics) in a way that more directly supports us, especially since we independently published this book, you can buy that one herewebpage

We really appreciate all of the thoughtful discussions we've had with you here this past week. My co-auhtors & I sensed what Rachel mentioned in her review of our book that this book fills a big gap in the permaculture world. We'd greatly appreciate if you can spread the word about our book's existence in your permaculture circles when the opportunities arise for you. Wouldn't it be great to see this book added to the suggested reading list of PDC courses?

This book evolved from an online course that Mike and I have taught together a couple times before. We'll likely offer that again in the future and will be sure to head back over here to the Permies forums to let you know if we do. I can't speak for Mike, but I'd also be open to exploring opportunities to bring this content to other people's permaculture courses. I've already been a paid guest speaker at one other local permaculture course on the topic of permaculture & personal finance and would love to open many other people's minds to this powerful aspect of permaculture. You can always reach out to me through the contact page on my websitewebpage.
