Well Paul, your letter in the daily-ish did it. I'm upping to the $65 level. It was the sentence that said, "think of it as the annual fundraiser." Of course.
It's kind of like public tv and radio, free and mostly quality and I never minded chipping in a little because I am happy to have it.
April Virginia wrote:Paul has asked for input on how to do this better. I think it is important to add a chapter on the legal realities of inheriting. IT COSTS MONEY. The federal government taxes inheritance and so do many states. Many family members who love their family farm and want to keep it, are forced to sell because they don’t have the cash to pay inheritance taxes. Entering into a legal Partnership before the person dies can help. The owner could also sell their property to a permie for a reduced rate, retain life tenancy and “payments” could be made in labor. There are many legal vehicles/structures that can help reduce the tax burden of inheritance. This is a critical section I see lacking. I’m sure there are permie interested lawyers out there who would be willing to help write options for a chapter.
I see the wisdom in that. My guess is that that would be a whole new book. And that new book would need to be updated regularly. Further, I think any bit of it cannot be written by me.
I think that it could be possible that a really short chapter could written by somebody with some expertise in this space and put into the current book.

It is a huge space that I cannot wrap my head around. I see it in tv shows and movies all the time - a fundraising party. And, of course, when npr is doing a fundraising week. When I give them money, it makes sense. But when I see how much they have raised, I am baffled.
I think me doing my patreon is very similar. And while I do have patrons there, it's just a handful - clearly I don't have the magic understanding of this space - I am just wired in a very different way.
Creating a thing and then people buy the thing - that makes sense. Kickstarter makes sense - and is fun. And the ability to develop relationships with 40 other people with things and do it in such a way that the people backing my kickstarter get 20 times more candy, and the people with the things get more eyes on their stuff - it just seems like a great all-around mega win for everybody involved. And I can wrap my head around that too.
Thanks for backing my kickstarter! I hope to bring great joy!

Hi, I'm in Canada and planning to attend the PTJ this summer. Would it be possible for me to collect my physical books in person when I'm at Wheaton Labs in the summer? If so, I'm happy to contribute the $20 shipping to canada into the project directly.

Nope. They won't be printed yet.
We are currently guessing that we will have them in our hands sometime around september or october. But it could be earlier or later depending on comedy.
Today is day 9 of the kickstarter. BWB was our best ever kickstarter - and on day 9 BWB was at about $50k. So, yeah, I think we are doing super duper great!
I had not checked kickstarter in a couple of days .. I think it was around 62000 the last time. It was a very nice suprise to see it all the way up to 67,700 !!! Very cool. Congrats on this doing so well.

Aaaaaaand
Could you please check that "You can find out more here" link? Looks like it links to the image of a button that doesn't do anything. Thanks!!

Congratulations! Btw Paul, you mentioned your feelings of gratitude for people pledging their coin, but I'm pretty sure that your generosity with candy at all levels, even the lowest, is well recognized and does plenty to oil the wheels. And a reputation for delivering on previous kickstarter a doesn't hurt either. Onya! (Hope that's not an obscure NZ term?)
And another meme! (and yes, many of us do manage to do both deskjob and homesteading. But it would be nice to veer all the way over to the homesteading exit!)
Mark Brunnr wrote:The Kickstarter mentions hundreds of thousands of people, but earlier it does mention millions of acres which are abandoned. One of the goals of SKIP is to create that network of people, as this book and the overall concept grows. Around the world this concept certainly exists, where older landowners either have children who have moved or have no interest in continuing their parents' goals (I have met such a couple), or don't have children. So their property will get sold by the kids or auctioned by the state when they are gone, and all their progress is lost.
The actual text of the Kickstarter DOES say "millions of elderly people":
Millions of people are blocked from homesteading because of the sheer expense of getting started. And millions of elderly people are frustrated that they cannot find somebody worthy to pass their homestead to. Every year hundreds of thousands of homesteads are abandoned - with the government taking possession about half the time.
If you're looking for ways to improve this Kickstarter, I would suggest referencing census or other data and quantifying this better. The language is squishy. I'm a backer, so I'm already on board, but that's my 2 cents.
All of these great e-books! I hope you reach $75,000 and beyond :)
I bumped my donation to $65, and begrudgingly paid shipping since I hate e-books... but how am I to read all these other stretch goal and early bird e-books?
Any fellow e-book haters have a way of reading e-books that they find tolerable?
I to prefer to hold a paper book. If the power goes out or we have an emp I don't want all my info stuck on a computer that I can't access. BUT, I have a solution! I buy a bunch, and I mean a bunch, of note books when they clearance the school supplies in September. Then I print off the ebook and put it in a binder and on the shelf it goes. I also have access to my info and the book lays open when I I'm studying and taking notes. I can also add pages for notes, ideas and diagrams. It is actually better than a bound book
55 issues of a magazine I find immensely interesting made me reconsider. Then realizing shipping here costed an extra 45 dollars made me almost back out again...
Then I realized (I didn't initially) that I also get physical copies of your other book and playing cards in any mix I want? Hell yeah! That was enough to make me bump my pledge amount up to 65.
