I just think it SO COOL that there's a balance of girls and guys. Usually, most of the ants/boots/gappers have been almost all guys. It's so cool to see some girls rockin' it, too!!!

Thanks for the updates. Are you planning squash and potatoes, etc just in case they mature? Or do you fully expect them to mature planting this late in the season?

Are there still spots open in the Permaculture Bootcamp?

Is the desire for people to do extra nest labor, so that expensive outside help is not needed, still wanted?

Would August 31st be an okay date to be picked up from the Missoula International Airport? What time of day would be preferred for pick-up?

Would it be adviseable for me to get a bicycle in Missoula or to ship one there? Would walking between the Laboratory and Basecamp work out okay?

The short answer is:

there are currently two spots open in the permaculture bootcamp!

In the pic you see (clockwise starting with fred),

Fred: the mighty bootcamp leader

the wonder twins, zach and taylor ...  they aren't really twins, but they are both infected with the same happiness thing that makes them constantly grin and wave, clearly cut from the identical cloth.  They arrived for an unknown amount of time.   I kinda get the feeling that they are going to be here a long time.  They sure seem happy here.  But maybe they are happy everywhere.  Maybe they will be here another month.  Maybe through the winter and beyond.   I don't know.  I think they don't know.   Nobody is particularly worried about it.

Jaqi:   has superpowers to make every task a bit of fun.   She stated with "maybe two weeks, maybe two months."  And it has now been about two months, but I suspect she is developing roots.   If I had to place bets in an office pool, I would say that she would be here through the winter and beyond.

English Fred:  He needs to try EVERYTHING!  Great big gobs of enthusiasm.  He is here from England with a schedule from his family.   In a few weeks he will be whisked away for more american adventures and then he pops back to england.

Josiah:   He came for the PDC and ATC and decided to continue with us in the bootcamp.  He is famous for mad scientist experiments with the solar glass recycler (fresenel lens glass melter)   I think this pic is his last moment here before he heads of to do fun summer things with some of his family.  But he said he will be back in about six weeks for our big PEP event in september.

Jennifer:   Also came for the PDC and ATC and liked it here so much she decided to stay.   She is in the bootcamp now and on the weekends she is helping me polish one of my books.     When allerton abbey is done, she is moving in and going to test the annualized thermal inertia!   So I get the impression that she is here for the winter and beyond!  Will she be in the bootcamp then?  Will she be in the bootcamp in three weeks?  I dunno.  She probably doesn't have an idea either.   We're all going with the flow.

Also here:

Cass is working on "conventional" building stuff and leading the bootcamp on friday afternoons.   Bootcamp stuff needs to be natural building or gardening or something, so cass comes up with friday afternoon projects that fit the bootcamp and keep things interesting for the boots.

Jeremy is up at ant village building his dream cabin.  He recently participated in battlebots and was on tv, so we've all been gathering in the classroom to watch the show and see Jeremy's robot in battle!

Coco is here most of the time helping with all sorts of things, including getting events set up!

And me and Jocelyn.

Am I forgetting anybody?

What a fun bunch.  This has been an excellent summer.

Oh ...  right ....   the question is "how many spots are there in the bootcamp right now?"   I'm going to say "2" - but really, I'm not sure.   There are about eight stories of people coming or coming back.   But there have been so many stories that I've gotten used to just waiting to see who actually shows up.   And then once they are here, you just don't know how long they stay until they have stayed that long.   Except for the people that come from another country - they are pretty much required, by law, to go away on a certain date.

I had a long talk with Fred and we agreed to say "2".   And then if four people are inbound and four people actually show up, we have come up with ways to roll with that.

And ...   all this is about a hundred times more complicated with so many more things.

So ...    2 ....  I'm gonna say "2"

I think things are pretty good in this space.   Jocelyn did tell me the other day that she has a list of bounties.  I'll leave this question for her.

Would August 31st be an okay date to be picked up from the Missoula International Airport? What time of day would be preferred for pick-up?

I think everything goes smoother with 8am to 8pm airport stuff.   We subsidize airport rides, and the ride-ee pays a bit too.   I think the deets are on the first post?

Would it be adviseable for me to get a bicycle in Missoula or to ship one there? Would walking between the Laboratory and Basecamp work out okay?

We have heaps of bicycles here for everybody that is here!

What’s the minimum notice I need to give to be able to get a ride from the Missoula International Airport to The Project? I’m checking I see what’s the soonest date I can get over, since August 31st is the latest arrival date I want to do. I would prefer to join as soon as possible.

:)

(yer gonna hate this)

It depends.

:)

I think that at least a couple days of notice is respectful.

We have had some people say "I know this is crazy - if it can't be figured out, I'll just get a hotel and you can get me tomorrow."

Sometimes with two hours notice, it turns out somebody is already in town and it's easy peasy.   Othertimes we fish around and it will be a stretch to get somebody out.    But it seems like most of the time things get figured out quickly.

Dave, I suspect that one of us boots would be willing to come get you whenever (preferably given a few hours' notice) since you are so awesome!

Thanks Kyle, Greg and Mike for the virtual high-fives! I'm having a great time imagining all of what I could do with my plot, and I'm trying to name it, too, and having fun with that. I'm getting to know the land now.
I'll post updates soon on my thread! And there's already plans to build up a bmx track, Mike! Woohoo, bicycles!

I still need to figure out how to link stuff, but here's the url to my thread for when said update actually happens. Expect BB's too, yeehaw! :
