FYI the northern lights are going right now.  For me they're almost reaching straight overhead.  Faint greenish and reddish.

Maybe this thread could be a place to alert folks whenever they're visible?

Edit to add aurora borealis so I can search for this thread more effectively later :)

Nothing much, only a lot of high haze and a green glow, north of 49 and east of the Rockies.

Auroras commonly land about 2 a.m. around here. So we'll see.

It does look pretty active (not here because it's daylight!) I like earth.nullschool website for aurora activity visualisations. I gather we are going through a pretty active period at the moment, so if you have dark skies keep an eye out to the North. They were visible in the UK as far south as Oxfordshire a week or so ago. I'm pretty sure I saw red with the naked eye and they were really dynamic.

I think I might have seen them in Colorado.

I will try to remember to look tonight to see if they are visible in my night sky.

I ask google if it would be possible to see the northern lights in Texas and yes it is possible.

Thank you for the alert.

I think I'm about 200 miles from Mike, but this is what we were seeing last night! (Well, the camera makes it more vivid, but it was still amazing with the naked eye.) I'd call this my first good aurora viewing.  And it might be good viewing again tonight.

My camera sucks...  It didn't record anything but black.  But mine looked like Christopher's only not that bright and vivid.  Maybe half that.  First time I've had good weather, known about it, and seen the northern lights since I moved here 8 years ago.

If they hang around until Sunday night, I might get clear enough skies to see them - then again, Mother Nature may prefer another cloudy night instead...

I saw some great photographs were taken from Nanaimo, BC, last night. I don’t know what time, though. Supposed to be good again tonight.

Looked outside.
Overcast with light rain.

It's seems like never clear here on an  aurora borealis night.

When I looked in March, I saw lots of stars to the west though when I looked towards the north all I saw was a hazy gray.

I looked this morning and just saw black.

Those of you who can see the aurora, check tomorrow evening, May 7, 2023. We will be taking a sudden impact type CME, and those tend to light the sky up. Have your cameras ready! I want to see pictures, I have never seen them....

:D

CME impact tonight, might flare the Northern Lights.

From the same solar flare that was setting off the possible lights the other night, due to the heavy proton storm it caused. The main CME is not hitting us, just the edge, so no serious problems expected, just possible light show :D

One spot I read suggested that tomorrow night might have even better odds in our area, so I suggest you keep an eye out both nights.

I sooo... wish our light pollution hadn't gone up. It would improve our odds immensely!

The greenhouses near my house... don't get me started.  So much light it's like having a city on either side of my house.  Most nights we are lucky to see the planets and a few of the brighter stars.  But no milky way.

I would sooooo... love it to be mandated that they put reflective, retractable covers - or time limits - on greenhouse lighting! After all, the plants deserve to sleep too!

Yes, the first impact has already hit, so tonight has a good chance of lights. There is a second one coming, uncertain if it will hit later today, tonight, or tomorrow. So check tonight, and tomorrow if you are up at dawn, check to see if it hit overnight. Tomorrow night is iffier, odds are it'll hit before then, has to do with the angle making it hard to measure the speed.

The moon is just past full so it should be better just after dark as compared to just before dawn.  I'd think...

Thanks for letting us know!

I didn't stay up to check early, but I see online some locals got OK shots of the aurora. By the time I was up at 0330, I had hazy skies and the moon was casting an awful lot of light, as predicted.

Lots of solar activity coming through at the moment. The sky is still a bit light from the sunset to see the lights though....possibilities for the next 20 minutes at least though.

I didn't realize it, but I think I saw it. I just saw a picture in a news article about this that reminded me I had seen this thread bumped. I looked at the sky after the sun went down and it didn't look like what I would expect from auroras, but the colors were unusual. I suppose this far south I would be looking edgewise through the curtain-like effect over several miles so they just appeared as static colors. There was a beautiful blue that struck me as something only seen during the day, which seemed odd. It really was a beautiful sunset.

Jordan, I think I just saw something like this here in Poland. We don't usually see northern lights here (only in the north part sometimes).

Those of you in range: check for Northern Lights tonight (Nov 30) and especially tomorrow night (Dec 1) solar storms hitting today, additive impact tomorrow that will bring chances even higher.

Tonight will probably be pretty! Solar impacts have been hitting all day, and we just had a good flare that amped it all up more.
If you might be in range, check the sky!

As I type this, we are awaiting CME impact from an X class flare. Not a solid blow, but a glancing one that has good chance of lighting up the sky tonight. Check if you have clear skies!!

High odds of a nice Northern Lights show tonight!  Sunday, March 24, 2024

Low X class flare threw a CME that will impact Earth this evening, sometime around 5-8 PM Central Daylight Time. Won't be a bad impact as far as any damage goes, but will probably make nice lights.

No chance of me seeing it here, I'm too far south and heavily overcast, if you get good pictures, post them, I want to see!!  :D

And certain of us can hear them too.  When I saw them while up in Alaska I heard them and no one else around me did.  I since found out that most people can't hear them only few people can, so that made me feel excited.  I hadn't even known they made a noise until I experienced it.

Watch the skies! May 4, 5, & 6 all have CME impact chances (6th is VERY likely) and there have been a lot of solar flares, so there may be more coming. All adds  up to a good week or more to sky watch if you are in range.

I've recently learned that the electric field that makes the auroras also makes water droplets adhere to each other, which would make clouds form.
This probably explains why you are always cloudy when the auroras are out, you are in a high humidity area that has lots of droplets to adhere.

Watch the skies, through this weekend at least!  Lower latitudes too. Solar storms coming in, they will be strong, lots of pretty lights expected!

I doubt I'll be able to see them, post some pretty pictures for us southerners, please !! :D
