This is a badge bit (BB) that is part of the PEP Curiculum.  Completing this BB is part of getting the straw badge in Homesteading

In this Badge Bit you will drive a truck and trailer backwards with turns.


Here is a video showing how to back up a trailer and how to back it up with turns.




        To complete this BB, the minimum requirements are:
             - you must drive a truck and trailer backwards 150 feet
             - turn around obstacle(s) so the trailer deliberately ends up oriented at least 90 degrees differently from how it started
             - properly connect and disconnect trailer from truck
             - test that the lights are working correctly
             - any street-legal motor vehicle is acceptable

         To show you've completed this Badge Bit, you must:
         
               Post a 2 minute video of you:
                   - connecting the trailer properly
                   - testing the lights
                   - driving a truck and trailer backwards and with turns
                   - disconnecting the trailer properly

I hauled the neighbor's leaves to my chicken run today.  Can you believe they let us rake them up and haul them away for free???

My videographer was very concerned with avoiding getting the license plate in the frame so it's impossible to see the obstacles on the other side I was avoiding (including a fire pit), and how I had to cut tightly around the stumps to get close to the chicken run door.  The starting position is more than 90 degrees away from the ending position.  The backing up portion of the video was sped up slightly to get the video under 2 minutes.

Here I am backing a trailer with turns.  I had to repeat this twice because apparently my phone went to sleep part way through the first time.  I make this video 4x speed to get it under 2 minutes.

Did the trailers backwards. Doing it since 5 years old at the farm, so it's not a challenge here.

This biggest challenge in this for me was figuring out how to film it solo. What I gave you is a view out the back window of my truck where you can see the ramps of the trailer moving about as I back it into and then down the driveway. Starts out with a 90deg turn from the street to the driveway then a couple 20 degree or so bends coming down the driveway.  Video is sped up to be under 2 minutes.

I actually filmed this before my sand badge submission, but I didn’t know how to edit videos on my phone a week ago, so circling back to this.

I had picked up a yard of gravel and needed the trailer in the backyard to unload. I had to navigate around the house while not hitting the telephone conduit box which takes up a corner of my driveway. (You can see this for a split second when I move the camera while backing up).

I needed my truck to get to work the next day, and wasn’t sure how long it would take to get the gravel out (spoiler, it took several days). I was worried the trailer would be tongue heavy, which is why you’ll see the Hi-lift jack when disconnecting. I had a bit of the opposite problem, it was almost perfectly balanced but just slightly tail heavy. The jack ended up acting as a weight on the tongue.
