Can this be the cold air intake, or the filters inside the furnace?

Replacing the air filter on my furnace. This is the basement furnace, that run most of the cold season. Normally have to replace the filter quite often. (My country home is old and very dusty)

Cleaned our air filter yesterday. It's supposed to be cleaned every 4-6 weeks and we bought it in December so a bit late, but doesn't seem to be too dirty.

Replaced the air filter here at my house. Before, comparison after.  Metal mesh side facing the fan to prevent the filter from being sucked into it!

Would cleaning the filters on a wall mounted Heat Pump/AC unit count?

That is the standard in Japan and I hear it's becoming more popular in the USA too.

I cleaned the filters on our bedroom heat pump/air conditioner.

I checked the filters and found these to be unacceptably dusty.

I removed them and vacuumed them first to remove the bulk of the dust. Here you can see the dust coming off from the top right cells.

Then I washed off the remaining dust with a strong shower spray.

Then I let them sun dry.

They are now much cleaner.

So I reinstalled them, ready for conditioning the air to appropriate temperatures without aggravating our dust allergies.

I have indoor pets and my air intake is right at ground level.   This makes very dirty filters and I replace them much more frequently than the suggested 90 days on the packages!  Even with a quick vacuum in between changes.

I don't know the last time our furnace filter was changed-- I think a long time ago!

Here's a photo before, during and after. So that I'm ready for next time, I added a date (accidentally a day early) and set a reminder in my phone calendar 3 months from now.

Excited to start working toward the PEP sand badge for NEST! It's a fun way to track things I already want to learn!
