When the kickstarter is over, Kickstarter gives us about 12 spreadsheets with all the user stuff on it.  And then as people update their info, we have to go get those spreadsheets again.

If I remember right, it's an excell spreadsheet, with the names, backer tiers, if they actually paid, and emails. The spread sheet is nice, because we can organize it by backer level to doll out the rewards, and organize it by backing date for all the early bird stuff.

I just upgraded to the $65 level.  Here's hoping everyone else in the $5 club does the same. What made me jump now versus the end was the email that said if you are planning on it, do it now so that the stretch goals get reached quicker and entice more people to support and/or up their pledge thus getting more stretch goals quicker which repeats over and over which is AWESOME! I knew I would back higher, the $65 goodies are seriously waaaay too good to pass up.
I'm pretty sure at one time I checked it is was over 100 (maybe 130?) people at the $5 backer, now i think it is 85. So that was fun to look at.
Checking the kickstarter has been a fun thing to do this month whenever I have a spare second.
The fundraising bit also resonated with me. Support things you love with dollars and then watch them do amazing things.  Once a year I can say thank you to all you wonderful people here at permies.com in the form of my support in dollars.

Liz,

Do you mean this bit?

Mike did math for the fun of it (what a twisted dude).  He says that if everybody below $65 raised their backer level to $65, the kickstarter would gain $65k. What a weird coincidence!  And that would mean that we would also have added 13 additional stretch goals! Freaky!

I am wondering if we are going to hit some cycle where a bunch of people raise their backer level, which knocks out another stretch goal, which entices a bunch more people, which knocks out another stretch goal, more people, another stretch goal, people, stretch, people, stretch, people, stretch, people, stretch, people, stretch, people, stretch, people, stretch, people, stretch, people, stretch, people, stretch ....

And then we are hitting a new stretch goal every few hours!

Is that gonna happen?

Mike Haasl wrote:All gas, no brakes!!!  We can do it

If you thought the Mother Earth News stretch goal was amazing, just wait until you see the next one.

I know there are a lot of people watching this and saying "I'll wait to see how big the pile gets and then I'll get in before the campaign ends".

That used to be me

Now that I see the inner workings of kickstarters and how they flow and grow and stagnate, I think it's really important to back earlier.  You might say "My $65 doesn't matter if I put it in now or at the end".  But it does.  If 8 people pledge now, we get that next stretch goal out there this morning.  That makes the pile of goodies even more irresistible.  Then everyone who visits the kickstarter in the next 18 days is 5% more likely to back it.  As that extra 5% back it, the pile gets bigger than it otherwise would have and the next new people to check out the kickstarter are 10% more likely to back it.

By the time we get to the last couple of days, there is a much bigger pile of loot and more backers than there would have been if you waited.  So if you get in now, you'll get more than if you wait till the end.

I'm sorry if this is rambling but I'm not awake yet

Y
I think it was reading them all. 😊 it is very fun to be a part of this.

Liz,

Perhaps the short version is:

the earlier you raise your backer level, the more stuff you will probably get in the end.

Today is day 14 of the kickstarter.  We just passed $80k.

Two years ago on April 20th, BWB was on day 14.  We ended day 14 with $53,014.

I keep going back and looking at all the amazing things we get with this kickstarter. It's so much and so great. I don't understand why everyone at permies did not al least get on the 1 dollars deal. And so glad I uped mine to the 65 dollar level. The stretch goals are more than worth it.   Can't wait to start getting all these goodies and the book.  Just an incredible job everyone!!!

Hey again guys, I was curious how to select the "US Virgin Islands" as my shipping address. It is possible this has already been explained, but I am having trouble locating the steps to do so.

If you haven’t made a pledge yet, just choose an option that offers a physical reward option and there will be a point where they ask you for a shipping destination as you go along.

If you’ve made a pledge already and want to change, first make sure you’re logged in. From the main project Kickstarter screen, you should see a “manage pledge” button at the top, or you can click on your pledge on the side bar and it will change to give you a “manage pledge” option there.

Both take you to a screen that should include a drop down menu with shipping options.

I hear you loud and clear Lydia!  The absolute pile of loot that we've arranged seems like it's a really easy decision.  Either at the $1 level with the "bird" stuff and especially at the $65 level with the stretch goals.

Assuming we hit this next stretch goal, at the $65 level you get:

6 SKIP books
5 Documentaries
6 movies
1 audiobook
5 ebooks
107 presentations by permaculture leaders
2 chances at Wheaton Lab event tickets
One live webinar with Q&A
61 magazine issues
5 draft eBooks

I love the memes Nicole!

One thing I'm trying to succinctly convey in the written word is how you get more if you back now than if you wait till the last couple days to back.  Anyone have alternative ways to describe this?

The reasoning is that if you back now, you help us achieve another stretch goal sooner than we would have.  Then when other people check out the kickstarter tomorrow, the achieved stretch goals are even better and they're more likely to back it.  So we hit the following stretch goal sooner.  And so on and so on.  So by the end of the kickstarter, a fraction more people (10%, 20%?) have joined in all along the journey and the goodies we get on May 2nd are better than if everyone would have waited till the last minute.

If anyone has a sexier way of saying this, feel free to chime in so we can make our messages have the intended effect.

Mike, I'm remembering the scene in the movie Willow when Mad Martigan rolls down the mountain picking up snow as he goes so by the time he arrives in the village, he's in a HUGE ball of snow.

It's the difference between that and someone rolling a snowball down the bunny hill.

We want the benefit of the time rolling down the mountain.

Edited to add a link to the scene I'm referring to.

And say maybe it's about not wanting to miss out on the fun sled ride Willow and the baby had.

Or maybe it's about knowing you helped win the war rather than just showing up for the party in the end

Okay, I guess that's enough Willow references for now. Hah

Well, I've seen this is the real estate market...
An agent says "We've had multiple offers, so make sure to bring your biggest and best by 5pm tomorrow."
This makes anyone on the fence throw their hat into the ring and can cause those who already made offers to consider going all in, often raising the offer on the property.
Which generally leads to a higher sale price.
Permies/Kickstarter says "Hey, we've got a great thing happening here.  Bring your biggest and best contribution (offers) by May 2nd for all these prizes."
But unlike the real estate market, you get even more prizes the more "offers" there are. And then boom. Snowball. More people jump in because "one" of the offers speaks more to them (for me personally it was the natural swimming pool/pond one). But the more people that jump in the more offers there will be. And the sooner we get the snowball rolling the bigger it will be on May 2nd.
So I say go for it. Put in your biggest and best right now. Dont wait until the end. Let other people who may be on the fence see the next amazing stretch goal and say, "Yes, that is THE ONE, the one I've been waiting for". And then they tell their friends how cool this website, book, community is, and they tell their friends, etc. etc. etc.

Maybe we're on the party bus heading downhill.  You know you're going to get on the bus, you just don't really feel in a rush to get on it.  If you get on just before the bottom of the hill you don't help the momentum as much as if you get on now.  20 people get on and it starts moving faster (more stretch goals).  More people see that and jump on and it goes faster.  By the time we're at the bottom of the hill we're really zipping along.

I'm not sure if that's the best analogy either but it's a start.

Not an analogy for a write-up, but another way to communicate it if you’ve got a digital artist on speed dial would be some world domination propaganda poster references that are automatically associated with immediate calls to action for people who are delaying for whatever reason.

I particularly like the idea of a “pointing paul” illustration on a “we need YOU!”-style one, but that’ll need someone drawing that.

Alternatively, a “keep calm” is an easy meme to find editors for.

Don't forget to tell your friends/acquaintances/neighbors/robocallers about the kickstarter.  Every new person who gets on board the bus gets a pile of sneaky mind-influencing permaculture education along with their books.  It's just another way to infect more minds with permaculture.    muhahaaaaa

I wanted to play with wording and color for the "We want you meme" .

Jennifer, do you happen to know what font the meme uses? I tried to find a similar one, but it doesn't give off the same vibe.

I thought it might be fun in green, but I don't think the green I picked matches well.

When I did it earlier I just did a quick search for a meme editor for it and landed on this:

https://www.postermywall.com/index.php/posterbuilder/copy/b56614ea319e9cdd6766de584478e7ec

Looks like font is Bevan with a contrasting red/black outline and a light drop shadow :)
