I have a housekeeping question: I started at less but then increased to $65. Since then I got an email that said I’m receiving this email because I’m not at the $65 level. Is this a problem I have to look into further? I really don’t want to miss out on the stretched stuff.

One option is to back with two cards, one at a lower level to get the physical book and pay for shipping, the other at $65 with US Virgin Islands as the location to get free shipping (eBooks only).

The other would be to just do the US Virgin Islands but then you can't get the physical book.  Maybe you have a friend that could back at the lower level for you and you pay them back?

At the $65 level, the shipping is based on sending a bunch of books to you, Kickstarter isn't fancy enough to allow different shipping amounts based on how many physical books you want.

Yes, this is a problem you need to look into!  We put that note in there just to catch you and let you know about it.  Yay, it worked!

So you'll want to go in and "manage your pledge".  You likely just adjusted your dollar amount without picking a higher backer level.  Here's where Jane put together a sort of tutorial that might help: https://permies.com/wiki/320/158427/SKIP-Book-Kickstarter-April#1250870

Good luck!

Could he give his books away to the knights who say free and request that they ship him one?
(You can get media shipping in the US for just around $3)

"give his books away to the knights who say free" how does that work? BTW I live at the opposite end of the globe ... which kinda surprised me when the "A Year In An Off-grid Kitchen" Kickstarter book was sent from Great Britain. Would this qualify me to be ranked K2.5 at least? Has Texas melted yet?

You can find out more about the Knights Who Say Free in this thread here.

I believe a team of volunteer "Knights" will work to make sure every book finds a home, be it through Little Free Librarys, the public library system, distributing through homeschool organizations, and other places/ways they devices.

BTW I live at the opposite end of the globe ... which kinda surprised me when the "A Year In An Off-grid Kitchen" Kickstarter book was sent from Great Britain.

I believe Kate Downham lives in Tasmania? And I think the most affordable way to print was to actually print outside of her country. I'm not sure, though.

Would this qualify me to be ranked K2.5 at least?

I'm pretty sure the only kickstarters that get numbers by our little green Ks here on permies, are the ones the started by Paul. Paul is a fantastic supporter of permies' kickstarters, like R Ranson's Transforming Flaxseed into Linen (more info on permies here), and Kate Downham's Backyard Dairy Goats and Real Food Cookbook: A Year in an Off-Grid Kitchen (more info about those here and here ). But, those aren't official permies/Paul kickstarters. Paul's just really awesome about supporting Permies in their kickstarters!

Yes I discovered the Tasmania connection while trying to figure out her rather vague sauerkraut recipe. Room temperature in the tropics isn't room temperature in Tasmania.

I decided not to engage the Knights unless I can negotiate with Arthur. Maybe I could use them as stocking stuffers and spread the knowledge in this neck of the woods.

Perhaps a task force could explore finding an offshore printer/distributor for non-US backers. I don't mind surface mail if the costs are considerably lower. My last purchase from Brisbane was stuck at Sydney for a week waiting for an aircraft.

We are planning on shipping overseas book orders from printers in that part of the world.  That's how we got shipping to be as low as it is (it's not low but it would've been worse from the US).

We wouldn't be able to take Knights who say Free books and send them to people for money, the logistics and coordination would be overwhelming.

After the kickstarter you could also always buy a physical book from permies.com or amazon...

Paul and I have been talking to some cool publishers and videographers about some more great stretch goals and they're starting to fall into place.  I've been looking for a mushroom related item but no luck so far.....

I looked behind the kickstarter curtain and there are almost the same number of people at the $10 level (the eBook) as there are at the $65 level.  If those folks (who don't want a physical SKIP book anyway) jumped up to $65, they'd get days of bonus material (books, movies, presentations, plans, etc) and if they select the US Virgin Islands for their location they continue to get charged zero for shipping.  That would bump us up 5 stretch goals so they and everyone else at the $65 level would get an even bigger pile.

What if you explained that in an update? Those get emailed to everyone who backs the Kickstarter right? I know that you have explained how to avoid the shipping charges in the FAQ, but not everyone is going to read that. It would be awesome if we could motivate even half of those $10 backers to bump their pledge up to the $65 level.

Wanted to suggest the same thing and than I saw your message Robin. Totaly agree with what you said.

If I remember correctly, it was always bundled with some other information and probably people just skim through it or don't even read the whole thing. Maybe a short update that only contains the information from your previous message + a current list of strech goodies at the end would be more inciting?

Oh, one other thing - maybe some of those people don't understand how strech goals work? I know that I was a bit confused about that when I stumbled upon the last kickstarter. Do you think sending some really basic explanation throuh an update would help?

I’m wondering if more requests to increase reward level or pledge will alienate people who have already given what they can. I’m speaking up because there are causes that I no longer support because they always wanted more money. Please reward what you like/appreciate too.

I'm pretty sure my average pledge to Paul's kickstarters is something like $3. I know there's also other long-time permies who are unable to pledge more than a $1 or 2. But, there's always been so much goodness at that level that I haven't felt bummed.

When I hear those messages about raising pledge levels, I think, "That's awesome for those that can! They get a lot of really great stuff at that level. But, I can't, and that's okay, because there's still a huge deal at this low level, too."

I guess my message to others at low levels who can't pledge more, is: "Don't feel bad. You're in good company! Thank you for giving what you can."

Paul's projects are possible because of a mix of people who can give just a little, and those that can give more. We need both, and I know Paul appreciates everyone. If he didn't, he wouldn't give out such a large amount of goodies at the $1 level!

Another thing I remind myself of is how there are LOTS of ways to give to permies that don't cost any money. Such as:

  • Help answer people's questions!
  • Go through Zero Replies and answer the people there, or help bump their threads
  • Welcome new members!
  • Give out thumbs-up! This really helps people feel good, and want to be a part of the community. Apples and pie are great, too, if you have them!
  • Make quality posts and threads! Share your knowledge with those around you. if you just did a bunch of research about, say, the best grape variety for your area, or how to build a roundwood house, or where to find natural clothing--make a thread about it! This bring people to permies via search engines when they have the same question.
  • Tell your friends! You don't have to be spammy, but if you see someone asking about how to make soap--post a link to a permies thread about it!
  • Share awesome permies threads on facebook, reddit, instagram, pinterest, etc.
  • Make links to permies on your website/blog/etc. The more links out there, the more google likes us, and the more people find out about us!
  • If you buy stuff through Amazon, you can use permies affiliate link so permies gets a little bit of cash. More on that here: how to link to amazon so 'the empire' gets part of the money
  • Describe your images when you attach them. This seems like a silly little thing, but it is HUGE for helping permies. Google and other search engines LOVE when images have captions or Alt text. This makes the images show up more in Google Images, and also ranks us higher. You can add captions/alt text one of two ways:

  • There's probably a LOT more ways that I'm forgetting, but I found a thread about this here: Ideas of simple tasks that anybody can do at anytime to help Permies.com. Hopefully that has even more ideas! A lot of us on "master" Gardeners or Stewards or Pollinators  have those ranks because we don't have money to use to help permies, so we help in all sorts of other ways (Gir Bot sees that, and gives us shiny titles!)

(I feel like there's another thread about this somewhere, but I can't find it at the moment)

Oooh, found another post on the topic by Jocelyn here: How can I help and support Permies !?

Jocelyn Campbell wrote:Jake, we have a thread for that! Actually, many threads for that.

There is a buffet to choose from.

  • post a lot in the forums, and make them media-rich posts (loads of pictures and videos) - more in how permies.com works
  • simple tasks anyone can do any time
  • feed the empire
  • how to share permies with your friends on social media
  • building links between permies and appropedia
  • sign up for the daily-ish email, encourage your friends (including social media "friends") and family to sign up, too
  • watch the tinkering with this site forum for more ideas - click the watch forum button at the bottom of the page

  • By the way, some times a google search works the best to find things on permies. The kind of search that is typed in like this:

    site www.permies.com/forums: help permies

Where the word "site" prefaces the URL, followed by a colon ( : ) followed by the word or words you'd like to search for. Did that make sense?

Just got a question about the $65 level and figured I'd answer it here...

If you don't want your name in the book, you don't have to put it in.

If you want your name to be "Pete's Green Monster Coffee Co" you can have that be your name.

    I'm at $65 but I'm not at $65???

Some people have raised their dollar amount but didn't change their backer level.  Unless you fix that you won't get all the stuff you're expecting.  Here's how to correctly increase your backer level (a huge thanks to Jane Mulberry for putting this together):

First click on Manage Your Pledge:

Then click on Change Your Pledge:

Then DON'T just change the dollar amount in the pledge level you're currently at!  Scroll down to the level you want to upgrade to and click anywhere in that box:

Then you can check your shipping location.  Either select your actual country to have all the physical book options, OR select US Virgin Islands to get FREE SHIPPING for ebooks only.
